How do you feel that being Indigenous has influenced your writing?

Okay this is a really good question!

I’ve talked about it a little bit, but mostly for me, I feel like the biggest influence is making my characters Indigenous the vast majority of the time. I have so many that are blatantly or coded Indigenous because growing up there was so little positive representation for me. Really all I had was Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron. Yes, Brother Bear is an incredible movie (and one of my favorites!) but 1) Kenai was a bear most of the movie and 2) it’s amazing and fantastic Inuit representation, but I’m not Inuit. It’s easier to see yourself in the Lakota when you’re also a Plains Native (I’m Wahzhazhe).

That means, I grew up not seeing myself represented often. I’m so glad that now there is so much more positive representation, especially for little kids (looking at you Spirit Rangers 🥰). So, I put myself in many of my works, especially on here. Yes, ofc it’s not always, but even my world building is centered on North America heritage and culturally wise (if you’re on my Discord server thanks to Patreon, I’m sure you’ve read my rambling info dumps).

I spent so much time being bullied for being Indigenous. I grew up during Y2K so even trying to wear things like feathered boho things, I had it ripped out of my hair, mocked, etc. Cutting my hair? Bullied. Not cutting my hair? Mocked. It wasn’t until I was in high school that really that stopped happening, but still even in college, I dealt with a Professor saying my Nation didn’t exist (insane btw. Don’t take a history class ran by a man that majored in tomato farming). In the workplace I’ve been called insensitive names, been made fun of when I’ve found things offense, etc. Because of my Indigenous heritage. Never because my European side.

So, basically, I feel like living as an Indigenous person has heavily affected my writing in many ways. I want to share. I want others to know, to ask, frankly to learn. Yes, I write a lot of monster smut. Whatever. Things do not have to be traditionally puritan media to be meaningful, provide representation or to teach.
