Normalize saying "I see them as friends but ship them if you want" instead of saying "They're just friends" because the first just sounds like a preference you have (which is right), the second sounds like a fact, homophobic (even if you don't intend to sound homophobic you do sound like that) and as if seeing them as gay was wrong.
