Dangkaw

Legend from the Ilokano People

In the olden times, there was a hunter named Dangkaw. He was widely known for his skills of hunting different animals in the forest. No one could equal the number of animals he brought home from a hunt. One day, he went hunting again in the forest. He saw a deer which he shot and killed. When he was going to pick up the deer he had killed, a beautiful woman appeared. This beauty was a fairy of the forest. She was very angry with Dangkaw for his killing the deer. She said that he must be punished. She ruled that he live in the forest, not with his family. Dangkaw had to go home accompanied by the fairy who turned invisible. He explained to his wife what had happened and bid her good-bye. He returned to the forest and the fairy reappeared. She told him that he would stay there forever and that he was going to take care of the animals in the forest. Dangkaw and the fairy got married and they stayed in the forest taking care of the different animals in the forest. The people say that when the hunters go to the mountain or the forest and they hear a shout, they would not catch anything and all the animals would leave. Even to this day, the hunters say that when they hear a shout while hunting, they cannot catch anything. So they say that Dangkaw is still there guarding the animals. Have you ever had this dream?

That you are in a suspicious place and then there's a suspicious but beautiful figure offering you food?

The elders say you must refuse the food, because that's an enchanted being trying to claim your soul. If you accept the food, you will never come back home. Some of my cousins had this dream, and they were lucid enough to say NO. Good for them.

It was then my turn to have this dream. I was on a boat on my favorite beach, and I ended up under a scenic old bridge. Under that bridge is a woman with an unclear face standing on the sea, unbothered. She offered me my favorite food, Lumpia.

The elders warned me about this, all I have to say is NO so I did. The being then turned sad and I felt sorry. So I said, "I will come back. I promise."

Tell me, was it wrong that I promised to come back?

Second is the Batibat 🛌 Beware the Batibat, otherwise known as Bangungot, a literal Nightmare. A heavy spirit that lives in fallen trees that will sit on you as you sleep until you suffocate. Wiggle your toes to wake up, or you may be scared to death with a post-mortem diagnosis of Sudden Arrhythmic Death Syndrome.

Engkanto

When I was 3 years old, my family went on vacation. On the way back home, I was struck with a sudden case of narcolepsy. It was determined that the cause was supernatural, so my father brought me to a witch doctor or albularyo. The story goes was that he threatened the entity that he will kill its vessel (me) by holding a nail over my chest if it didn't leave me. It obeyed, and I instantly woke up and became my lively self again. And I'm still here.
