Ping-Pong Writing Adventures
If you're not familiar with it, ping-pong writing is when two writers take turns adding to a story. No outlines, no overthinking, no "does this make structural sense?" panic, just a back-and-forth exchange of words, ideas, and surprises. It's chaotic in the best way, and somehow always leads to something delightful.
To give credit where it is due, this whole idea of ping-pong writing came from @naturallyteal and it's been one of the most unexpectedly joyful creative writing exercises I've ever tried.
I've now co-written three ping-pong stories:
🏓 The Call with @sakascal It is a Good Omens canon-scented, rather plotty story that somehow winds its way to a tender, sweet ending.
🏓 The Village Fete with @maon25 Just pure Good Omens cottage core fluff and joy.
🏓 I Prefer the Funny Ones with @naturallyteal which began as a Shakespearean farce with Aziraphale & Crowley and somehow (of course) ended up featuring The Doctor.
As someone who tends to be fairly rigid in my plotting (I do love me a tidy narrative arc and a clear plan), this kind of spontaneous, collaborative storytelling has been such a gift. It's loosened up my writing, reminded me to just play with ideas again, and helped me to remember that not every story has to be grammatically perfect, thematically cohesive, or narratively sense-makey to be wonderful.
If your'e curious, give them a read! They're short. Strange. Heartfelt. And full of surprises.
And, if you're a writer who tends to get stuck in your own head, maybe try a little ping-pong writing yourself. It might just shake something loose. 💛
Honestly, I think my writing's better for it. Definitely freer.
