Enjoying Special Days without Regret
One of the things about being on a "diet" is that I sometimes used to feel bad for not eating healthily on special occasions—such as birthdays, Christmas, Easter, Mother's Day, or Father's Day. In recent days and months, however, that mindset has changed for me. I now feel that these special days are important family days, and it is OK to not be on plan all the time.
In fact, I think it is healthy to take a break for those special occasions, or even once or twice a week, to have a treat. I think this is because it helps us stick to a healthy lifestyle. If we are too rigid, never having a treat can eventually be too much for us, causing us to drop the healthy lifestyle altogether due to feeling overwhelmed.
What I find helps is that on days you want to treat yourself, you maybe have another one of your normal meals a bit healthier. For me, on the two days I go to town, I like to go to a café and have something to eat. I usually have fruit or something light for breakfast. That usually keeps me going until I am in the café; however, if I feel I won't be able to eat for a long time, I just have my usual breakfast and still have the treat.
When I am in town, I usually go for walks. I park in a car park and walk to the places I want to go. If I am shopping, I try and park further away from the shop. It all helps.
