When colours HUG they make new colours. Just beautiful, right? A while ago we talked about the book, “little blue and little yellow,” by Leo Lionni , as the perfect introduction to colour play with very young kids. The simplest of ideas to explore colour mixing in action, linked to a story of playing with friends. Here is a toddler and her parent during Sensory Art Play this term, enjoying the red and blue paint, noticing what she makes of it, on her hands, arm, between her fingers, magically revealing purple on her body.  AHA!! The joy of MASKING TAPE- everyone finds a different idea! Today we had an afternoon as a family playing in the studio with paint, print and tape. I love masking tape as for me it has had great possibilities to add a quick geometric direction in an image, especially great to contrast with fluid organic lines. I have this book I love ( Die Welt von Innen, by Julie Coquart) full of the most stunningly detailed and boldly coloured microscopic images of the inner worlds inside flora and fauna. The book often comes out when I’m thinking about slowing down with tiny repetitive drawings and paintings. Today I played with layering of tracings, Posca pens, size 0 brushes, primary coloured acrylic and then for a change of scale, added the masking tape to give a stripe overlay. My little artist was really into the block of wood I was painting onto so grabbed her own, and tried out writing our initials using the tape. The importance of PROCESS, CHILD- LED art for little kids— “T looooved it, he keeps talking about it and asking if tomorrow we can go again hehe. Watching him explore the clay was incredibly refreshing, seeing so much confidence and trust in his movements, not feeling he was failing or doing a good job, just thoroughly enjoying it. At breakfast we started talking about our growing collection of plants, the twists and turns and patterns. I suggested we draw them and my little artist got out her glitter pens, I got out some ink, and she was intrigued by the cactus.
