The Demon by Jim Aparo
ive seen you mention your thoughts on glenda, so im wondering; what your thoughts are on harry and randu as well? would you change anything about their relationships with jason?
My good friends Harry Matthews and Randu Singh.
I do quite like both of them and their dynamic with Jason, I wish we saw more of both of them in comics.
I think Harry doesn’t quite get Jason, even if he likes him a great deal, and he struggles with the occult nature of a lot of Jason’s life/existence. He likes Jason, he’s terrified of Etrigan and that would certainly put a strain on their friendship to some extent. Harry loved Jason even if he didn’t really understand everything. (Maybe he had a little bit of a crush, maybe it was purely platonic, but he did care a lot about Jason.)
Randu understood more about Jason’s unconventional life and had a much easier time accepting it. He was more of a part of the occult side of Jason’s life and therefore had a different – not greater – series of concerns whenever Jason went hieing off to do whatever it was he was going to do. Randu loved his friends, Etrigan’s reveal didn’t change that much, Jason was still Jason to him.
I do like the difference in that dynamic, of Harry not quite getting it but being the more mundane social friend. The fellow Jason could have a drink with and be human. Randu grounded him from a different perspective, sparring with him and discussing the more academic side of Jason’s life. Together, I think they were quite good for Jason. Maybe he wasn’t good for them, exactly, but they chose to stick around.
If I was going to change anything about that relationship? I’m pretty happy with the base dynamic they had, but I suppose I’d have liked it to develop a bit more. Maybe see Harry get to know a bit more, even he wasn’t ever comfortable with it. Let the three of them work together a little more.
(I would like to see Harry as himself again instead of that damn pillow.)
The first issue of the 3rd Volume of The Demon was published with a cover date of July 1990. Etrigan and Jason Blood found themselves in Hell, with Jason having amnesia. Merlin returned Glenda Mark and Randu Singh to Gotham City. ("Lost Souls" The Demon vol 3 1, DC Comic Event)
