when whumper puts their hand out and whumpee reluctantly spits out whatever was in their mouth (key, pin, etc. if they were trying to escape) or just in a carewhumper/handler way
this could be silent or with a “spit it out.” “drop it.” if you like your pet/living weapon whump
also that with something that was a gag like undoing or wrapping the outer layer of a gag and then just making whumpee spit out the cloth or whatever was the part in their mouth
it’s just enough humiliating and intimate but also takes a level of trust in the whumpee and they are being treated like a child or pet
could be a good way to show a defiant whumpee sometimes being obedient, they know what’s expected of them and they have to pick and choose what to resist
i just find it a little detail that says so much about the relationship between the whumper and whumpee
feel free to add to this too
(also this was in part inspired by @victimeyez professional victim story that i am currently OBSESSED with, particularly inspired by the Caius and Tommy dynamic. i don’t think this specifically happens with Caius and Tommy in any of the chapters but there are definitely similar moments and god I LOVE)
For @whumpdoyoumean but you all can enjoy it too 🥰
This is mix of YA, New Adult, and Adult fantasy. I mostly read YA and NA to be completely honest but I've included a mix. These are by no means niche recs, theyre mostly fairly popular or famous. I'm gonna limit myself to 5 and give a little info about each. If anyone has any specific questions about any of these feel free to DM me.
A Darker Shade of Magic by V.E. Schwab
First book in NA fantasy trilogy but can be read as standalone, fantastic whump for main character Kel who is an orphan with extremely rare and othering magic who is raised by the royal family in his country with no memory of his life before living with them. He can travel between 4 parallel dimensions and gets caught up in cross-dimensional crime with people who are much more fucked up and powerful than him. Super fun world building, interesting characters on all sides of the conflict, my beloved, have reread multiple times just because it's so good.
Notable whump tropes: stabbed, choking on blood, drugged
The Lies of Locke Lamora by Scott Lynch
First book in adult fantasy series (3 books so far and they come out insanely slow, you can also read the first and be done if you want). Not urban fantasy but very grounded with super interesting world building. Tons of emotional and physical whump for the main character Locke who is a Gentleman Bastard (a thief and con artist who pulls high risk high reward jobs on rich marks because they can blend in with the upper class). Someone makes a power grab in the cities underworld and Locke gets caught in the crossfire. Fantastic thriller, phenomenal supporting cast (I love these boys so bad), extremely funny, Locke is not a fighter but that doesn't stop him from getting in to fights.
Notable whump tropes: drugged, beaten, stabbed
White Cat by Holly Black
First book in a YA urban fantasy crime/mystery trilogy (rest of the series is take it or leave it). The main character Cassel is the only non magic user "worker" in a family of workers. Working is outlawed/regulated so Cassel's family put their talents to use working for an organized crime family. Cassel is kicked out of school which leads him to having to stay with his family and he starts to notice some things about them that don't add up and have dire implications. There is great emotional and physical whump for Cassel and the magic system is super interesting and has gnarly consequences for the people who use it. I've been rereading this book since I was a teenager and I personally think it totally holds up.
Notable whump tropes: nightmares, psychological/magical manipulation, beaten
Ninth House by Leigh Bardugo
First book in an NA urban fantasy mystery trilogy (third book not out yet) about a woman who can see ghosts getting inducted to the elite magical underbelly of Yale University and its secret societies. Some unknown thing happens to her mentor before the start of the book and Alex investigates despite being told to leave it alone. Technically the whump is Lady!Whump but honestly when it comes to reading a book (as opposed to watching something) I'm pretty gender apathetic because there isn't the same visual component as with tv/film that can squick me out when it comes to Lady!Whump. That being said oh my god she gets so fucked up and they utilize magical healing so well to get away with doing a debilitating or lethal amount of damage because they can heal her up and get her back on her feet but it is costly and extremely unpleasant. Some people say this book is really slow I think those people are boring and don't understand the ✨vibes✨. This book has some extremely salvageable flaws but imo slowness isn't one of them.
Notable whump tropes: beaten, painful magical healing, magically attacked
Last but not least is a book that is very complex to recommend.
Captive Prince by C.S. Pacat
Adult fantasy (no magic or magical creatures) romance (eventually), technically a trilogy but they're super short and really just one book split into three parts. The first book in the series especially has some non-con elements, which is generally something I avoid, but which, in this case, is baked into the fabric of the culture and the two main characters relationship to each other in a way that I think is extremely nuanced and interesting and thematically relevant but also if you don't want to read that I get it. That being said this book is genuinely one of the best, most intricate and tightly plotted books I've ever read. Genuinely phenomenal. It's about Damen, a prince set to inherit his throne until he is betrayed by his brother and gifted (in disguise) as a slave to the prince of an enemy nation as part of a peace treaty. He must keep his identity a secret or risk punishment at the hands of his greatest enemies. I thought this book was gonna be silly smut when I read it for a book club but not only was it not particularly smutty (like 3-4 sex scenes in the entire trilogy which are all character studies) but the writing was so good 😭. That being said this book is so hard and complicated to recommend (despite being one of my favorite books I've read in the last 5 years) because it looks like silly smut (silly smut is valid queens I'm not yucking the smut) but is plotted like a fantasy political thriller and is thematically dark/complex. The whump is crazy good too but like it would be irresponsible to say that without giving context.
Notable whump tropes: held captive, whipped, psychological whump
Let me know if you guys would be interested in seeing more of these, I uh I read a lot 😅
whats the last tv show or movie you got obsessed with
Well! As you can probably tell from the myriad gifsets I reblogged, I am a very big fan of Young Sherlock :D
I went into it expecting to have a good time. I love Guy Ritchie and this looked like it would be another one of his fun and stylish projects in the same vein as his Sherlock Holmes movies and The Man From UNCLE (beloved!!!!). Also I was hoping for whump, naturally, and boy did this show deliver on that front!
What I was NOT expecting was for Sheriarty to become my ultimate toxic yaoi ship. I haven't shipped them in any other iteration of Sherlock Holmes, but MAN it has ended up being impossible for me not to ship them in this x) They are sooooo. I really hope we get more seasons, because their relationship is fantastic and Moriarty is fascinating.
Y'ALL!!! i found new (to the community) whump! after watching the pitt, i was trolling gerran howell (who plays whitaker)'s imdb page & stumbled upon the movie freedom's path. the first THIRTY MINUTES are all whump! in lieu of GIFs, i humbly offer you screenshots.
first, his friend dies in front of him
then, he gets knocked to the ground, ears ringing, by a nearby explosion
but the real whump begins when he stabs himself with a bayonet to escape being killed by the confederates. his hands are shaky, he has to stifle his pain noises... it's DELICIOUS.
from there, his rescuer (RJ cyler, AKA earl from me and earl and the dying girl) alternates dragging and fireman carrying him to safety.
eventually, they reach someone able to stitch him up (while he's feverish & remembering his friend's death, of course) & he has to hobble around with a crutch for awhile. delightful stuff!
all of these are in the first half hour!!! he just whumps so well, y'know? i think it's his giant, sad eyes.
RJ cyler's character has some significant emotional whump, too, for those who are fans of it, but i didn't want to screenshot the physical whump because it's racialized violence & that crosses a line.
Dislocated joints are actually very fun whump concepts. Think about it:
First you have the initial injury. Be it a dislocated shoulder, hip, knee, all potential locations are dehibilitating, losing the use of that arm or being unable to walk, etc.
Also that every time the whumpee tries to move the dislocated limb they risk making it worse and intensify the pain.
Then... then you have treatment. Forcing a dislocated joint back into place is NOT FUN. Not for the whumpee, not for the caretaker. And if someone inexperienced tries and messes it up... oh boy oh boy we making it worse!
And of course you have all the issues that might come about after the joint is fixed, such as strained muscles, sprained ligaments and tendons, nerve damage, vascular (blood vessel) issues, stiff joints/osteoarthritis... the list goes on.
Anyway thinking about this bc someone I know irl dislocated both their knees on separate occasions, (and it took like four medical professionals to put it back in place). Also I remembered a scene in Mom's Night Out (2014) where Sam dislocates his shoulder and instead of letting a medical professional set it he slammed. His shoulder. Into a wall. And shoved it back in place. In the storming emergency room. In front of the receptionist. I cringe every time.
1x1- attempted suicide, bruised neck, sea-sick, mention of past abuse, tripped, fight, threatened, limping
1x2- pushed off horse, coughing, runs into tree, knocked out, bleeding, bruised, treated, arm in a sling
1x3- abused, upset, sick with pox, collapses
1x4- bitten while asleep, cries out in pain, choked
1x7- emotional whump, stabbed, heavy bleeding, dies
