Day 24: Xavin!….and Xavin! Shapeshifters are fun. I absolutely adore Xavin. They’re such an interesting character.

Gotta love the Runaways and always gonna love how Nico has such unintentional rizz that she canonically hooked up with like half the group lmao.

(With 'friends' I mean 'best friends' obviously they're all friends)

Xavin and Hulkling are forcibly teleported to the park where they see the two Skrulls holding their friends as hostages. Elektra-Cloak Skrull is holding Speed and Wiccan in the cloak-like tendrils while the Skrull Commander is holding Karolina and the rest of the Runaways captive. The Skrull Commander gives a sadistic choice by offering to let Xavin have their Majasdanian girlfriend and leave the Earth if they would kill Hulkling. Then, Klara Prast whom the Skrull Commander has obviously ignored as powerlessly cowering and whimpering uses her control over plant-life to make a large tree shoot up under the Skrull which makes him release the others. Karolina Dean immediately blasts him powered by anger. Victor Mancha and Chase Stein take down Elektra-Cloak Skrull, making her free Speed and Wiccan. The Skrull Commander tells Elektra-Cloak Skrull to kill them all and she launches energy daggers which Hulkling protects Molly Hayes, Nico Minoru and Xavin from by hulking out in their path. Then, she throws a sai which cuts Nico's cheek, allowing her to bleed and draw the Staff Of One out of her body. Xavin is using their Super-Skrull/FF powers to battle their mentor but the Skrull Commander counters with FF powers too. The Skrull Commander is winning but Xavin says they will defeat him by exploiting his weakness.

Elektra-Cloak Skrull is lashing out with hand and eye blasts. Speed picks up Klara and Molly and takes them far away out of danger and then zooms straight back. Just in time to get blasted by Elektra-Cloak Skrull along with Nico. Hulkling punches Elektra-Cloak Skrull who retaliates with two sais. He holds her arms off and reminds her that he is the son of Skrull Princess Anelle and Kree Mar-Vell and that it is his prophesied destiny to unite the Skrulls into one Empire again. He was chosen by the Skrull God who has told him he doesn't love her. Her shocked reaction gives him time to knock her out with a headbutt. Karolina and Xavin are still fighting the Skrull Commander who suddenly uses his Human Torch power at max to go nova. Xavin surrounds him with an Invisible Woman forcefield to protect their girlfriend. It turns out that Xavin's inability to use multiple copied powers has made each individual power stronger, so their field is able to contain the Skrull Commander's nova flame which ends up consuming himself. Xavin says that ironically it was their own weakness which beat the Skrull Commander.

The Karolina and Nico's reunion reminded me that if you've been (understandably) out of the loop on Runaways you might not know that there was actually a Marvel Voices comic in 2023 all about Karolina finding a healer/doctor after the events of Runaways #100.

She got to hang with Xavin and the Light Brigade throughout, which was neat since it's normally only Nico who gets to have adventures outside of the Runaways.

Karolina and Xavin are also very chill around each other, no drama or anything but still acknowledging that they were important to each other upon a time while still making it clear that they've moved on with their lives.

I don't know if Xavin will ever make it back into comics in a big way so this was kind of a nice send off in the meantime. You get to see them in their cool Anka redesign and know that they're not just stuck in jail covering for Karolina anymore.

Anyway I believe you need the marvel app to read this one (or just y'know, google around for it), so give it a shot if you wanna see what Karolina was up to in space.
