2020: a (personal) recap in no real order

every year it feels like I achieve less but am overall more well adjusted (kind of)

in hindsight, feels a bit like a cosmic joke for this to have been the year to committing to specialising in emergency medicine

I've always been proud to be a doctor and the COVID didn't change that; but there were a few months I was scared to be one, that was new

did a a brief stint of surgical assisting too

things that did not end up happening in 2020 (for obvious reasons): travel, buying a house, losing weight (because of work and the pandemic I indulged in a lot of stress eating), any writing (again, so stressed I could not be creative)

my dad needed brief hospitalisation twice this year (not for COVID), which was really upsetting

I did have a bit of an emotional journey with the boyfriend; since he was WFH and we live in a shoebox one bedroom apartment we fought a lot... but it forced us to work on our communication and on what mattered to us so weirdly we are now stronger than ever

currently studying for my emergency medicine exams, tbh not terribly optimistic on passing them first go, but I'm coping okay I guess

though I was so fatigued I got into a teeny tiny car accident where my car got a small dent (no one was hurt)

anyway saw the early warning signs of unhealthy anxiety around exams and work so I started seeing a psychiatrist again, to good effect

otherwise I've played lots of D&D and board games and gotten very much into candles, self care stuff like eye masks, and dabbling with tarot cards (for fun, not because I believe in it)

thankfully being Australian means our healthcare system wasn't as badly hit as some places but this year turned into a bit of a blur honestly where I achieved little and had not much motivation to do more than that

I read how I asked 2020 to be kind and I am struck by the naivety to ask the future to be kind when it will be what it will be; instead I ask my future self for the fortitude to face whatever 2021 throws me
