Why Star Butterfly is super important and awesome
When the theme first came out, I was super excited. I expected greatness. Magical girl transformations, super epic fight scenes, a couple of fun characters who probably (like most super powered teens) don’t quite fit in. And instead, I got this.
A goofy, energetic, hyperactive and sometimes careless princess from another dimension.
She’s constantly on the go to the point where it’s almost annoying. Almost.
See, the thing about Star Butterfly is that she’s the kind of character who is so hyper and wacky that one pretty much expects her to be nothing but comic relief. With sensible and reliable Marco by her side, it would have been SO EASY to write her off as a gag character. She could have been doing weird things only for Marco to sigh and groan and complain. I’m sure we’ve all seen pairs like that on tv.
Not that it isn’t funny, but there’s a certain sting felt when the gag character is reduced to being nothing but an annoying joke especially when one shares many traits with them.
I act a lot like Star. I jump and bounce and tend to be reckless. My ADHD makes it hard to stay focused, so I can easily empathize when Star is feeling restless.
I know that feel. As well as the impulsiveness and high levels of energy. Pretty much everything Star does is something I can relate to. They’re traits that I share. Traits that i’m used to seeing be demonized and played only for cheap laughs. So imagine my surprise when Star Butterfly, in all her quirky fun, is respected.
Her fellow students adore her. Her family loves her. The Diez family loves her. Not despite her traits but because of them. All these traits that people have mocked me and many others for are traits that are seen as valuable and likable. Yes, they might get a little fed up with them from time to time but it’s never seen as a constant problem. Instead of blaming Star for her behavior they try to understand and compromise. She’s treated with love and respect, which means the world to me. Honestly, I never thought I would see a character like this be treated with so much respect. And gosh darn am I happy she is.
tl;dr: Star shares many traits that I, as someone with ADHD, can identify with. (TBH a lot of her behavior just screams ADHD. It’s just a headcanon. OR IS IT!?) I used to be mocked because of these traits and ashamed of them. I see them mocked on tv. Star, however, is treated with respect and is seen as likable because of them. After being ashamed of my behavior for so many years, it’s absolutely wonderful to see someone like Star. Shine on, princess.
