HEATED RIVALRY PRIDE WEEK ➤ day 2: life & healing
"That’s what makes Zohran Mamdani’s election in New York so unsettling to the old order. New York City is not just another municipality; it’s a sovereign-scale entity. Its population surpasses 38 states. Its metropolitan GDP trails only Texas and California.
It is, by any metric, a small country masquerading as a city.
It governs more lives and more wealth than most nations. If democratic socialism — housing reform, public banking, equitable taxation — functions here, it obliterates the myth that such governance can’t work at scale. The fear isn’t ideological. It’s empirical. Because if Mamdani can keep the lights on, reduce homelessness, and maintain economic growth without catering to Wall Street, then the capitalist gospel collapses under its own dead weight.
What terrifies the establishment isn’t failure. It’s feasibility.
If it works in New York, there’s no reason it can’t work in Nebraska. If it works in Queens, it can work in Kansas City. And once proof exists, belief becomes irrelevant. The ship of democracy, fully refitted, will keep sailing — and no one can claim it isn’t American."
- Jackie Summers
This weekend I was schmoozing at an event when some guy asked me what kind of history I study. I said “I’m currently researching the role of gender in Jewish emigration out of the Third Reich,” and he replied “oh you just threw gender in there for fun, huh?” and shot me what he clearly thought to be a charming smile.
The reality is that most of our understandings of history revolve around what men were doing. But by paying attention to the other half of humanity our understanding of history can be radically altered.
For example, with Jewish emigration out of the Third Reich it is just kind of assumed that it was a decision made by a man, and the rest of his family just followed him out of danger. But that is completely inaccurate. Women, constrained to the private social sphere to varying extents, were the first to notice the rise in social anti-Semitism in the beginning of Hitler’s rule. They were the ones to notice their friends pulling away and their social networks coming apart. They were the first to sense the danger.
German Jewish men tended to work in industries which were historically heavily Jewish, thus keeping them from directly experiencing this “social death.” These women would warn their husbands and urge them to begin the emigration process, and often their husbands would overlook or undervalue their concerns (“you’re just being hysterical” etc). After the Nuremberg Laws were passed, and after even more so after Kristallnacht, it fell to women to free their husbands from concentration camps, to run businesses, and to wade through the emigration process.
The fact that the Nazis initially focused their efforts on Jewish men meant that it fell to Jewish women to take charge of the family and plan their escape. In one case, a woman had her husband freed from a camp (to do so, she had to present emigration papers which were not easy to procure), and casually informed him that she had arranged their transport to Shanghai. Her husband—so traumatized from the camp—made no argument. Just by looking at what women were doing, our understanding of this era of Jewish history is changed.
I have read an article arguing that the Renaissance only existed for men, and that women did not undergo this cultural change. The writings of female loyalists in the American Revolutionary period add much needed nuance to our understanding of this period. The character of Jewish liberalism in the first half of the twentieth century is a direct result of the education and socialization of Jewish women. I can give you more examples, but I think you get the point.
So, you wanna understand history? Then you gotta remember the ladies (and not just the privileged ones).
ask historicity-was-already-taken a question
Holy fuck. I was raised Jewish— with female Rabbis, even!— and I did not hear about any of this. Gender studies are important.
Why Gender History is Important (Asshole)
“so you just threw gender in there for fun” ffs i hope you poured his drink down his pants
I actually studied this in one of my classes last semester. It was beyond fascinating.
There was one woman who begged her husband for months to leave Germany. When he refused to listen to her, she refused to get into bed with him at night, instead kneeling down in front of him and begging him to listen to her, or if he wouldn’t listen to her, to at least tell her who he would listen to. He gave her the name of a close, trusted male friend. She went and found that friend, convinced him of the need to get the hell out of Europe, and then brought him home. Thankfully, her husband finally saw sense and moved their family to Palestine.
Another woman had a bit more control over her own situation (she was a lawyer). She had read Mein Kampf when it was first published and saw the writing on the wall. She asked her husband to leave Europe, but he didn’t want to leave his (very good) job and told her that he had faith in his countrymen not to allow an evil man to have his way. She sent their children to a boarding school in England, but stayed in Germany by her husband’s side. Once it was clear that if they stayed in Germany they were going to die, he fled to France but was quickly captured and killed. His wife, however, joined the French Resistance and was active for over a year before being captured and sent to Auschwitz.
(This is probably my favorite of these stories) The third story is about a young woman who saved her fiance and his father after Kristallnacht. She was at home when the soldiers came, but her fiance was working late in his shop. Worried for him, she snuck out (in the middle of all the chaos) to make sure he was alright. She found him cowering (quite understandably) in the back of his shop and then dragged him out, hoping to escape the violence. Unfortunately, they were stopped and he, along with hundreds of other men, was taken to a concentration camp. She was eventually told that she would have to go to the camp in person to free him, and so she did. Unfortunately, the only way she could get there was on a bus that was filled with SS men; she spent the entire trip smiling and flirting with them so that they would never suspect that she wasn’t supposed to be there. When she got to the camp, she convinced whoever was in charge to release her fiance. She then took him to another camp and managed to get her father-in-law to be released. Her father-in-law was a rabbi, so she grabbed a couple or witnesses and made him perform their marriage ceremony right then and there so that it would be easier for her to get her now-husband out of the country, which she did withing a few months. This woman was so bad ass that not only was her story passed around resistance circles, even the SS men told it to each other and honoured her courage.
The moral of these stories is that men tend to trust their governments to take care of them because they always have; women know that our governments will screw us over because they always have.
Another interesting tidbit is that there is sufficient evidence to suggest that Kristallnacht is a term that historians came up with after the fact, and was not what the event was actually called at the time. It’s likely that the event was actually called was (I’m sorry that I can’t remember the German word for it but it translates to) night of the feathers, because that, instead of broken glass, is the image that stuck in people’s minds because the soldiers also went into people’s homes and destroyed their bedding, throwing the feathers from pillows and blankets into the air. What does it say that in our history we have taken away the focus of the event from the more domestic, traditionally feminine, realms, and placed it in the business, traditionally masculine, realms?
Badass women and interesting commentary. Though I would argue that “Night of Broken Glass" includes both the personal and the private spheres. It was called Kristallnacht by the Nazis, which led to Jewish survivors referring to it as the November Pogrom until the term “Kristallnacht" was reclaimed, as such.
None of this runs directly counter to your fascinating commentary, though.

After they're out, Shane and Ilya record a lifestyle video together for ESPN. ESPN is chomping at the bit: no one can imagine Racecar Rozanov and Hockey IQ Hollander's life behind closed doors, and they want the exclusive.
The crew shows up totally unsure of what to expect, charmed but surprised when it's Ilya opening the door in a tank and sweats and dramatically sighing, "Is meal prep day."
They spend hours filming the couple navigating the kitchen, arguing over how much salt to put in their egg cups, talking about how they learned to cook together when they first made a real go of their relationship.
Shane keeps his hands busy and his eyes focused on his prep work, and that makes it easier to talk about the murky grey area between healthy food choices and disordered eating. Ilya just rubs his back and mocks how he's dicing the bell peppers and keeps calling what he's wearing his "unlucky sweatpants" until Shane hits him in the face with a spatula while mumbling something about tuna melts.
Surprising exactly no one, the video goes viral when it drops on YouTube. It explodes on socials, with thousands of people stitching together Ilya saying "is meal prep day" with videos of their own meal prep, their healthy habits, sharing their own journey to loving food and treating it as fuel and not punishment. They use the tag #eatlikehollanov and it trends immediately.
Ilya's favorite part is when fans start to battle over #eatlikehollanov - the food posts get overtaken with videos and photos of them out at social events, serving cunt and generally looking like top designers battle it out for who gets repped by The Gay Wonder Twins of Hockey (which they do, and stop calling us that, we're married you perverts).
Then Shane and Ilya are spotted at a bar making out in a dark corner and everyone remembers these two probably spend 30% of their waking hours eating each other alive, and suddenly it's #eatlikehollanov munch munch munch yum yum yum.
The Centaurs jump on the trend, sharing their own food prep videos with increasing innuendo. Luca Haas turning bright red while eating a glazed donut gets 3 million views, but Troy really breaks the internet by eating a banana while maintaining eye contact with the camera the whole time. Harris threatens to replace the Kiss Cam at games with #eatlikehollanov and Shane tries his hardest to crawl into a corner and die because he just wanted to share how he protein loads, you guys, why did you have to make it so weird.
Scott Hunter helps not at all by making blueberry and banana smoothies with Kip. Shirtless.
Jacob Tierney talks about “boring” and “fuck you” meaning “I love you” for Shane and Ilya:
“A really good friend of mine—a person who reads my scripts who's a brilliant novelist named Rainbow Rowell—she read the first episode and she said to me… “just remember that every ‘fuck you’ is ‘I love you,’ and maybe you're saying ‘fuck you’ too many times”
“And I was like oh, that's such a good call. That's a great call. Because it was just a reminder of all of the things they say to each other that are not ‘I love you’ and that are not—”
“Boring, you know, when Ilya calls Shane boring, he's saying he's in love with him. And he's not boring, [Ilya] is endlessly fascinated by Shane. And the only way he can communicate that is by making fun of him and calling him boring, because anything else would rip his soul out through his face.”
“Like that's the idea, and so even the words we use to obfuscate matter, you know?”

It’s so crazy that suicide prevention is just people going awwww don’t!! Awwww come on noooooooooo stopppppp
One of the best ones I saw was a thing noting that every single one of the few survivors of suicide jumps off of the Golden Gate Bridge realized, on the way down, that the problems they were killing themselves over actually were fixable or could be worked through...except for the now - extremely unfixable - problem of gravity.
Went to the Holocaust Museum in DC once. There was a video interview of an Auschwitz survivor who said he and some other prisoners stayed up all night with a man who wanted to kill himself. The man didn’t kill himself and survived to liberation.
In the video the survivor said “Never seek a permanent solution to a temporary problem. And they’re all temporary problems.”
Hearing that from a guy who survived the Holocaust rewired my brain a little bit.
I think something a lot of people don't understand is that depression is not suicidality, and suicidality is not depression. People can, and are, depressed without being suicidal, and sometimes suicidality peaks as people are emerging from depression. Suicidality is a wave, and the trick is to allow that wave to crest and subside WITHOUT acting on it. Whatever it takes to ride it out. For some people that's distraction, like watching television. For others it's calling a friend -- not to talk about the suicidality, but just to talk. For others it could be as simple as going to sit in a coffee shop or library, because the presence of other people is a huge diminisher of suicide risk. That's what suicide safety planning is about. It's like having any other type of emergency plan, like a plan for fire or evacuation. It's making a plan when you are in the frame of mind to do so, so that you can just DO the plan without having to think about it when the occasion arises. When you're in the midst of suicidal ideation, or even intent, you're not in a problem-solving mood. So knowing past!you, with the help of a therapist hopefully, came up with the plan and all you have to do is follow up until the wave crests and subsides, is what allows you to see another day.

After a moment, Sirius crossed the room and sat beside him, leaving a careful space between them.
“You grew up…” Sirius said softly.
Remus gave a weak laugh, wiping his eyes with the heel of his hand.
“No,” he said. “I just got older.”
He looked at Sirius, eyes still shining with tears.
“I died without you, Sirius. And now I get to do it all over again.”
Sirius turned toward him sharply.
“What are you talking about? I’m—I’m right here.”
Remus shook his head.
“No. No, you’re not. Not really.” He drew in a slow breath. “The man I loved died six years ago. And I had to learn how to live with that. How to move forward.”
“I’m still me,” Sirius whispered.
Remus exhaled slowly, like he was trying to hold back something overwhelming.
“But you’re not mine anymore.”
Sirius looked down at his hands, twisting the ring on his finger.
“You’re with him now,” Remus said quietly. “Married. For a while, I assume.”
Sirius nodded faintly. “Just over a year…”
Remus’ face barely moved, but his shoulders sagged slightly, as if the confirmation drained what little strength he had left. He looked away, blinking hard.
“Do you love him?” he asked softly.
Sirius hesitated.
“Yes,” he said. “I do.”
The silence stretched thin between them.
Remus nodded slowly.
“Then that’s that, isn’t it?”
Sirius opened his mouth, then closed it again.
Home Is Such a Lonely Place Without You: Part 7
Regulus sat at the linen-draped table, delicately spearing a cherry tomato and then deciding against it.
Christopher had ordered for him.
Without asking.
Regulus kept his expression pleasantly neutral as he nudged a leaf of rocket to the side of the plate.
It wasn’t that he disliked salad. He actually enjoyed salad; properly dressed, balanced, intentionally.
That wasn’t the point.
“I’ll have the seabass,” Christopher had told the waiter earlier, barely glancing at Regulus before adding, “And he’ll do the house salad. Dressing on the side.”
Regulus had blinked.
He wasn’t some decorative accessory.
And then, as if that weren’t enough...
“Gotta keep your figure,” Christopher had added lightly, squeezing Regulus’ thigh under the table as though it were charming.
Seriously?
Regulus lifted his wine glass then, examining the deep red inside as the waiter finished his practiced presentation.
“You’ll love this,” Christopher boasted, practically glowing. “It’s nearly six hundred pounds a bottle.”
The waiter poured the two glasses with care and retreated, leaving the bottle on the table like a trophy.
“Mm,” Regulus hummed, raising a brow as though suitably impressed.
Six hundred pounds.
That was pocket change... He had cufflinks worth more than that sitting in a drawer at his brother's flat, untouched.
He took a small sip.
It was good. Rich. Full bodied. A little showy.
Like the man across from him...
Christopher leaned back in his chair, clearly pleased with himself. “I had it last year in Bordeaux. You can’t find it most places.”
“I’m sure,” Regulus replied smoothly.
To be fair, he liked Christopher.
They’d met on a hiking trail in the Lake District—both muddy, both halfway up a miserable incline, both quietly judging the tourists who’d come unprepared. Christopher had been charming then. Easy to talk to. Witty in a restrained way Regulus appreciated.
They had similar interests. Similar hobbies. Similar circles.
On paper, it worked.
But sometimes...
Sometimes Christopher tried too hard.
Like tonight.
The restaurant was one of those dimly lit places that smelled faintly of fake truffle oil and money. Christopher had insisted on jackets. Insisted on valet. Insisted on the wine.
Insisted on ordering...
Regulus set his glass down gently.
“You’re not eating,” Christopher observed.
“I am,” Regulus said mildly, nudging another tomato.
Christopher smiled, but there was something assessing in it. “It’s just greens. Don’t tell me you’re intimidated by lettuce.”
Regulus’ fork paused.
He met Christopher’s eyes steadily.
“I’m not intimidated by anything on this table,” he said.
Christopher laughed, missing the edge entirely.
“Good. I’d hate to corrupt you.”
Regulus leaned back slightly in his chair.
Corrupt him.
How novel.
Christopher launched into a story about a client—something involving Monaco and an unnecessary helicopter—and Regulus let his gaze drift for just a second.
He caught his own reflection in the mirrored pillar near the bar.
Impeccably dressed. Perfect posture. Composed.
And faintly bored.
He dragged his attention back to Christopher, nodding in the appropriate places.
This was fine.
Christopher was fine.
Stable. Predictable. Impressed by price tags.
Regulus took another sip of the wine.
Six hundred pounds.
Regulus set his glass down a little harder than intended.
Christopher paused mid-sentence. “Everything alright?”
“Perfect,” Regulus replied smoothly.
—
“Reg, you alright?”
James’ voice cut gently through the noise of the pub.
Regulus blinked, pulled back from wherever his thoughts had wandered. “Hm?” He glanced up. “Yes, sorry. What was the question?”
James was watching him with that open, unguarded concern he’d never quite learned to hide.
“What do you want to drink?” James asked. “Your pick.”
Your pick.
Not, "I’ll have this and he’ll have that."
Not, "dressing on the side."
Regulus felt something small and quiet settle warmly in his chest.
The contrast was almost laughable.
Dinner with Christopher had been curated—expensive wine, controlled lighting, careful impressions. Every choice a performance.
With James, they were wedged into a slightly uneven wooden table near the window, the floor faintly sticky, someone laughing too loudly near the dartboard.
And Regulus had never felt more considered.
“A glass of brandy would be nice,” he said, studying James as he spoke.
James’ face lit immediately.
“Brandy it is!” he declared, as though Regulus had suggested something daring and brilliant instead of entirely reasonable.
Gods, James was happy.
James had been happy the last several months—years even. But there had been an edge under it. A tension Regulus hadn’t quite named.
Now he could.
James still loved him.
He’d been trying to pretend he didn’t.
James squeezed his hand across the table before standing. “I’ll be right back.”
Regulus watched him weave toward the bar, greeting the bartender like they were old friends already.
He looked… younger like this. Not in years. In ease.
James returned a moment later with two glasses, sliding the brandy carefully toward Regulus like he was presenting something precious.
“There you go.”
Regulus wrapped his fingers around the glass, letting the warmth seep into his palm.
“You alright?” James asked again, softer this time. He reached across the table and took Regulus’ free hand.
There it was again.
That unfiltered sincerity.
Regulus squeezed back.
“Perfect,” he said, and meant it.
James’ shoulders visibly relaxed at the answer.
“Good.” He leaned back in his chair, grinning. “Because after this, we’re getting something sweet.”
Regulus raised a brow. “Sweet.”
“Something irresponsible,” James clarified. “Something aggressively fattening.”
Regulus huffed a quiet laugh. “Rebelling against my figure?”
James frowned. “Your figure is none of my business unless you’re cold and need my jacket.”
Regulus’ expression softened before he could stop it.
“I’d like that,” he said.
“Fattening dessert?” James asked.
“The jacket, too,” Regulus replied evenly.
James blinked.
Then he smiled—not the bright, beaming one.
The softer one.
The one that felt like his.
“Yeah,” James said quietly. “You can have that too.”

WHY IS THIS SO GOOD?!
They put drugs in this show, and this edit is the closest I've come to being able to snort it like cocaine. Excluding binging the entire show in 6 hours after first turning on episode one to see what all the fuss was about.
I am currently vibrating out of my skin waiting for the HEATED RIVALRY finale and the cottage and the only thing that has kept me in the general vicinity of sanity has been the absolutely god tier fic. I can't tell you how many times I've had to practically shove my face into my hoodie to try to muffle the cackling laughter because I was not going to explain what I was reading to the people around me, but all the lolz-worthy fic really did help take the edge off the desperate intensity of feelings I had after episode 5.
I meant to post this sooner, but then wound up adding to it and adding to it because I couldn't stop reading and I still am further behind on my reading list than the last time I checked the tag on AO3. What an incredible fandom to get to watch explode, from this medium-sized book fandom I joined just a month before the show started, not even realizing that it was about to get such an incredible adaptation, but goddamn is there some fucking talent here. Hayden and Jackie are getting the love from fandom that they deserve! And you have no idea how many loopy!Shane or social media fics I have read and how each of them are incredible!
