Note for anyone who follows me for fiber related stuff and who is interested in natural dye;
If you want to fuck around with madder root, this is where you want to buy it.
It's $22 a pound here. Plus shipping, around $30. Meanwhile, sites selling it for cloth dye work sell it for between three and four times as much.
In addition, I've had better results getting good clear reds from the stuff from woodfinishing enterprises than from just about any I've tried from sources selling to hobby dyers. IDK why I'm just telling you the facts. The stuff from that link is better and cheaper.
Why is a woodworking site selling it? Because craft woodworkers sometimes like to make their own stains, and making a lake pigment from madder gives beautiful colors.
They also have the cheapest, best dyer's alkanet I've found. Same for logwood chips, weld, and even cochineal.
