the cow is trans because marshmellows here are usually trans colored (white pink and baby blue, sometimes also light yellow and green), the cow is meant to have marshmellow hair.

Yeah the pink and baby blue is because marshmallows here are usually associated with these colours. They're usually sold as white or white and pink, though. The association with baby blue comes from the colour of the bag of one of the more common brands:

I doubt any Israeli here ever thought about the marshmallow brand they buy but I bet you'd vaguely recognise that mascot from birthday parties.

Also, I would translate the text to english slightly differently:

See you at the bonfire, who's bringing a guitar?

It's supposed to read more like a casual text in a groupchat.

Anyways yeah. It's s'mores flavoured and has marshmallow inside. The cow has trans hair because it's associated with marshmallows here. They probably figured it'll be clearer than if it was white and pink. Or maybe they were going for white that's slightly blue tinted.

I want to talk about the Jewish closet.

Being a member of the LGBT+ community, I’ve had to come out many times to many people. When coming out to someone you don’t know well you end up trying to gauge “Is this person safe?”. Maybe you ask leading questions or dance around it a bit. Poke one foot out of the closet, far enough to see a reaction but still able to duck back inside if things go south. Sometimes people will just come out and ask you, and you need to make a split second judgment of their character, because stalling is also an answer.

Then there’s the Jewish closet. And it’s exactly the same.

Story time. I live in a place with almost no Jews. And I don’t mean no visible Jews I mean, according to census data, single digits. And ironically because of this, we feel safe having our mezuzah outside. No one knows what it is. In fact we only know of one time it’s been recognized, and we know because we could hear slurs being spoken outside our door.

Anyway, I was bringing in a grocery delivery, and as I was unloading the food the delivery driver looks at the mezuzah and asks:

“What’s that thing there?” “Oh uh… it’s a mezuzah” “What’s that?” “Oh um… it’s a like, a charm?” “What kind of charm?” “It’s a prayer scroll” “Oh, like a religious thing? What religion is from?”

I had been trying to be vague but he kept asking questions. And now I was faced with coming out of the Jewish closet to a man I'd known for two minutes who knew where I lived.

“Yeah… it’s a Jewish thing” [Pause] “Huh. Well that’s different.”

And then I finished unloading my groceries feeling like I’d just failed a quick time event. But in the end “Well that’s different”, while a bit weird, wasn’t aggressive or angry, and so I was probably safe.

Some people don’t have the luxury of the closet though, they can’t pass as straight or cis or gentile. If you can’t pass, you’re always out in the open. And if you can:

You don’t look gay. You don’t look trans. You don’t look Jewish

And now the LGBT+ community is pushing us away too and forcing us back into the closet. And I personally feel a lot safer as a queer Jew in non-queer Jewish spaces than in non-religious queer ones.

just in case this spreads: i literally mean “not sane” here. I’m not joking about how goofy i am. I mean i have behaviors and symptoms and histories that most people don’t- and ones that have been considered insane. Will you still love me when i tell you I hear things sometimes? Will you still love me when you know I’ve attempted suicide multiple times? Will you still love me when I obsess over things and break down often and can’t promise you i can always be happy?

Feeling physical exhaustion as a psychosomatic reaction to things that feel daunting or intimidating is such a ridiculously counterproductive thing to do. Like there's a situation that requires you to be alert and mentally present and paying attention, and your brain just goes "hey I don't wanna. I don't wanna be here. I think one of the kindest things you can do for people with various mental health struggles is just... let people back into your life after they've been absent for a while.

Making friends as an adult is so fucking hard already and isolating yourself from other people is a very common symptom of depression, anxiety, burnout, ocd, trauma, grief, etc. Which means that someone will do the hard work of recovery/healing and resurface back into a world where their previous friends have written them off because they stopped showing up.

So if you know someone where you're like "yeah we could have been better friends but they fell off the map a bit" and that person suddenly reaches out, or starts showing up to events even though you kind of forgot they were still in the group chat... well they may have been Going Through It and you don't actually have to punish them for their absence you can just be glad that they're back.

i think you should be allowed to identify as trans without retroactively saying you were also trans in the past. i think the "born this way" rhetoric is limiting and you should be able say stuff like "i was fully a girl when i was a kid and now im a boy" without it invalidating your current identity but maybe that's just me
