For all you Lighting Designers and Programmers out there, here’s a present for you.

These are TouchOSC layouts I’ve developed over many hours of work for my own use, and I’m sharing them with you now. They’re not perfect yet, but they’re better than anything I found myself.

One is for iPad Pro (will run on iPad, but buttons are too small to be easily used), which replicates the Gio face panel, not the condensed Ion version. It has another page for Encoders for various attributes, and one for running a show. The direct selects page is currently barely functional, it was borrowed from another layout I can’t remember entirely to be able to credit, and I intend to update it.

The other is an iPhone focus remote. Simple, limited buttons, but very useful when in the rig or down onstage to quickly check fixtures.

I hope you get some use out of them. Send me suggestions for improvements if you have any!

So crescentwrenches had an awesome idea for theater/AV techs to post their gig bags, tool boxes, etc. Here’s mine. I work in live audio (at a venue and freelance with my own small PA) and do field recording for broadcast. I’ve given everything in the pictures above a number, so look down below for a description and comment about each item!

TOOL BAG:

1. Stanley tool bag: I got this for like $10 on Amazon a while back and it’s held up well. Holds what I need, durable enough, and looks professional. 2. Lutz interchangeable ratcheting screwdriver: I bought this when I interned for an IT department. I’ve used it for everything from rebuilding computers to repairing refrigerators to building props. 3. Kobalt adjustable wrench on tool tether: Every theater tech should have an adjustable wrench in their gig bag. I’ve been using this one for about four years and I love it. 4. Mechanix work gloves: For unloading trucks during load in, pushing cases, rigging, focusing lights, etc. Not very happy with these, but they do the job for now. 5. DeWalt belt tool holder: I don’t use this very often, but during big shows I can put this on my belt and hold an adjustable wrench, sharpies, flashlight, etc. 6. Various screwdrivers 7. Various pliers and a very mediocre set of wire cutters that need to be taken out of my bag 8. Scotch super glue: I stuck this in my tool bag because I found it on the floor one day and it’s saved me on about four shows since then. 9. Various adjustable wrenches to loan out to stagehands or when I need another one to hold something in place 10. 120v outlet tester: Checks for messed up ground, etc. 11. Crappy extra batteries: I usually have a few procells but I used them all up. 12. No contact voltage detector: I never use this, but it’s here if needed. I think the batteries are dead. It’s been months since I’ve touched it. 13. Crappy multimeter 14. Stanley precision screwdrivers: BEST $3 I’VE EVER SPENT 15. Ebtech cable tester: Everyone should have a cable tester in their bag. I happen to have this Ebtech. Nothing special. Works fine, but doesn’t test NL4. 16/17. Gerber multitool and holster 18. MagLite MiniMag LED and holster: Currently my favorite flashlight 19. Gerber Crucial multitool: Look it up. The black version is great. 20. Crappy flash drive 21. Crappy pocket knife 22. Really nice scissors: because nobody can ever figure out what happened to the venue’s scissors 23. Various lead and lead free solder 24. Wire strippers 25. Solder sucker 26. Mediocre Weller soldering iron 27. Tire pressure gauge: I work with a lot of carts and things 28. Pen with a bunch of different colored ink 29. Various sharpies 30. TOTALLY AWESOME MEYER SOUND SHARPIE 31. King Size Sharpie: I don’t actually use it. It’s solely for bragging rights. 32. Metallic Sharpie: For writing on gaff and stuff. I love this thing. 33. Drum keys: Because drummers don’t know how to tune their own drums 32-36. Electrical tape in various colors: For labelling handheld mics, usually 37. Band-aids 38. Lexicon-branded lanyard: As an emergency backup tool tether

BACKPACK:

39. Behringer UCA222 Audio Interface: This thing is technically a really mediocre interface, but it’s gotten me out of so many difficult situations since the headphone output on my MacBook has a grounding issue. Easy the best $25 I’ve ever spent. 40. (2) RCA to ¼ cables: The set that’s usually in my bag is still at work, so there’s a normal set of RCA cables holding it’s place in this picture. I use these for the UCA222 interface. 41. 1/8 to dual ¼ cable: For connecting a phone to the board 42. Adapter case (more on that below) 43. Sennheiser HD280 Pro Headphones 44. Mediocre Passive Behringer DI Box: Hate on Behringer all you want, but this DI has gotten me out of dozens of difficult situations and doesn’t sound horrific, so I keep using it. (Yes, I have much better DIs for my PA, don’t worry) 45. HP Stream 7 Windows Tablet: This thing cost like $60 with a few discounts, and it’s great for looking up manuals and emails and stuff. I love Windows tablets. neotrotsky would be proud. Still running Windows 8 because 10 was giving me driver issues with the accelerometer, but it still works fine. 46. Kmashi 10,000mah battery: Because my stupid iPhone lasts two hours 47. Micro USB cable: Charges Stream 7 and my iPhone (with battery case) 48. (4) 6′ TRS to XLR Male cables: I get a lot of questions about why I carry these. I work on analog boards a lot with ¼ outputs. I usually don’t end up using all four of these, but they’ve saved me more times than I can count.

ADAPTER CASE: 49. (6) XLR female to female turnarounds: Yes, I’ve used all six at the same time. 50. (6) XLR male to male turnarounds: Yes, I’ve also used all six of these at the same time. 51. My Stage Management Kit

Alright, so some of my regular followers might have noticed that I have a silly tag system (or they’ve just noticed random tags that don’t seem to make sense). For general theatre posts, often tech, I tag “techrider.” For resources and references, I tag “pencilcup.” And for most of my own posts, I tag “smkit.” You know, to be cute. But this time, I’m actually posting about my SM kit, and I’m pretty stoked, so I might just tag all three ‘cause what the hell, it’s my blog and I can screw with the system all I want.

Meet Samson:

Samson is a product of Artbin, made of a durable cloth material with (I discovered) luan siding. Notice the sweet rolling luggage-style handle and the nice big snaps keeping the two pieces together. The top has its own carrying strap, and the bottom (wheels attached) has two comfortable handles for hauling this beast in and out of my trunk when moving spaces. Hopefully won’t have to move him much this summer, he’s not light.

Let’s open him up!

First glance does not do it justice–it is quite deep. But let’s check out that neato zipper-pocket on the top flap:

That pocket is basically the size of the entire flap, but for now I’m just storing my headband and desk/clip/LED light. ($10, Barnes & Noble, super sturdy bright light, I highly recommend it!)

Alright, and as for the rest of the top bin…

Bubba Zips, my stage management buddy, is coming along for the ride. He loves the upgrade.

Time to unpack!

Here’s everything that fits comfortably in the top:

1. Huge 4″ D-ring trapper keeper (regular binders are typical in stage management, but keep in mind that we’ll be in the elements this summer). 2. Ruler, protractor, scale rule. 3. Hole-punch. 4. Spare water bottle. 5. Bubba Zips. 6. Umbrella. 7. Clean rags. 8. Main tape supply (spike, gaff, drafting, glow). 9. Spike stick with scissors attached (thank you, Techblr!). 10. Tape measure. 11. Electric pencil sharpener. 12. Gerber tool. 13. Stun-gun (told you, public park). 14. Personal medical kit. 15. Outdoorsy things (bagged). 16. Craft/sewing kit (bagged). 17. Extended medical kit (bagged, large). 18. Shakespeare reference book.

Moving on to the bottom, because we have a long way to go…

Electronics/etc. (shoe)box, office supplies box, office supplies bag, hardware box, toolkit, hygiene box, feminine hygiene bag, three packs of gum.

The pink-tab boxes (Artbin or something similar, I shopped around quite a bit) are fantastic. Deep, sturdy, very strong. The bags are nice as well, waterproof, clear-ish, and they smell awesome.

Basic toolkit:

…with more hardware-type things. I’ve got rubber bands, glues, flashlights, lighter, spare screwdrivers, clips, a boxcutter, and one of those cool marker/cutter combo things. Also a pen light, because you can never have enough little lights at the park.

This here is my electronics/et cetera box. It includes (pictured above) another damn flashlight, spare scissors, fishing line, “other” tape, a table-clock, an AUX cable, and an iPhone cable (I don’t even have an iPhone…). Pictured below, we have a box of batteries (AA, AAA, D), a speaker (compatible with the AUX cable), a Master Lock & keys, headphones, a USB-power adapter, and a flashdrive.

Next, we have a plethora of office supplies. Post-its, tacks, sticky-tack, staples, clear and double-sided tape, eraser-heads, more rubber bands, tabs, paperclips, binder clips, page protectors, pens/pencils/highlighter, pencil sharpener, erasers, and a stapler.

Let’s see if I forgot anything…

Oh yeah, that quick-flick finger-moistener and the gluestick and white-out.

Next, the bag: It contains less-used office supplies, like Elmer’s glue and a spare stopwatch, plus lots of stickers/labels. Also a pack of notecards, and a pack of thank you cards, because you never know when you will owe someone a proper thanks!

Next up, hygiene…extra important when you’re working in nature!

Basic feminine hygiene is in an easy-go bag. Here, we have Carmex, Wet Ones, Gold Bond, lotion, powder-scented antiperspirant, Colgate wisps, make-up wipes, facial tissue, a pack of bobby pins with hair-ties and barrettes wrapped around it, a scrunchie, a pack of Q-tips, Tide to-go sticks, and a brush/mirror combo. Now let’s look under some of these things:

There’s also hand-sanitizer, baby powder, Listerine tabs, toothpaste, floss, a pencil-sharpener for makeup, a nail-clipper, tweezers, a lint-roller, and some cotton balls.

That’s all, folks! Thanks for taking the tour. Oh, and you know that tiny box of brads I forgot to pack yesterday? Well, I packed away all the stuff again after these pictures, and realized I forgot that stupid little box again…so here it is, all alone. Bubba is so disappointed in me.
