People will really say anything on the internet. They may be extinct in the wild, but I literally run a bishounen sanctuary with a captive breeding progra-- okay so we need to work on the name but I promise they like it.

A big part of the problem is that for the past few years, most gacha games have been relying on wild caught bishies. Given the size of the gacha character trade and high demand for fresh stock, a lot of bishie hunters have gotten into bed with the industry, but it's not sustainable.

Hoyoverse is big enough that they have their own in-house breeding and even cloning programs for their bishies, but even they also rely on a variety of wild caught bishies sourced from regions with poor regulations on hunting to keep their population numbers up.

Disney certainly has the resources to create their own bishie farms, but they are notorious for outsourcing to dubious bishie suppliers.

Meanwhile other gacha contenders have to try and keep up with the competitive standards set by the industry giants, with questionable results. Even when they are reintroduced to their natural anime environment, sometimes it does more harm than good.

These bishies are rarely given sufficient attention or upbringing and many languish in the backgrounds of their narratives without much in the way of character arcs or enrichment. With a few exceptions, their long-term prospects tend to be pretty dim.
