Writing update

Alright, so I’m working on a story for wander’s birthday. She requested a new chapter for an old, old fic. And I got a good thing going on it. So hoping to get that out soon-ish

I’ve also got a shared thing with someone and I want to get the next chapter of Break the Locks Off This Cage out.

I really don't understand how "without getting kudos or comments a fanfiction author is going to assume that people who clicked their fic didn't like it" became a controversial take.

I don't know why some people think an author should imagine, or guess that people who click their fic enjoyed it it when nobody is telling them that.

If you're re-reading a fic constantly, or leaving it up in your tab so that it re-loads every day for a hundred days the author is not going to know that unless you tell them. They'd love to hear it. It would make their day.

And if you don't tell them you liked their fic, there's no reason for them to assume you did.

Writers on Tumblr when they see notifications on their story: Yay! People are liking my story! Oh, somebody left a nice comment! Oh, they even reblogged it! That was so sweet of them!

Writers on Tumblr when they see 0 notes on their story: Nobody read it.

Also, just for fun, here are the stats for my fanfic with the most hits:

Almost half of the comments are my replies, so there are actually 27 individual comments. And almost 27,000 hits. So, basically a 1:10,000 ratio.

Do you still think writers are being unreasonable?

While 27 comments may not be much when someone gets them gradually, it's a lot to read through to make sure you're not contributing to unintentional spam.

I promise you there are vanishingly few authors who would be upset to receive more than one comment saying the same (positive) things!

If I receive multiple emails of comments on something I write, there is an actual zero percent chance of me being upset by it. Literally would make my day, week, month. Love your authors! Comments do not have to be detailed analysis - something as simple as “<3” conveys so much. (In fact, the very first comment I got on AO3 was “<3” and I treasure it.)

I got the email notification for "Break the Locks Off this Cage" and it looks amazing. I love your writing and have even delved into stories with some of my "ugh, no thank you" elements to it because I'm thrilled to read anything you write. This one? Hits so many of my buttons.

But when I follow the link it won't load.

Soooo there was an issue when I hit post... I accidentally forgot to paste the final working copy, so the draft was what got posted. Well, when I realized that, cuz the word count was off by few hundred words, I pasted what I thought was the final copy... nope! That was a different fic! That fic didn’t even have the same kinks! And at that point, I was trying to leave to go have dinner with friends and I tried posting the final working copy but I was still worried so I just deleted it out of sheer panic. XD

I’m posting the correct copy now. And it’ll have the same tags as I took a picture of them. And the same author’s notes and summary.

I am dying to know- is there going to be an update or anything for War Prize? I need more angst, more miscommunication, and more misunderstandings. It feeds me.

Oh I don’t want you to starve! War Prize is not abandoned. I can confidently say that. I’ve got the chapters planned out. I’ve just gotta steer the adhd brain in that direction. Which isnt always the easiest task.

I can tell you I’m working on a JangObiJast story for kinktober. Jango and Jaster invite Obi-Wan and his master over for an informal dinner while the pair are on Mandalore. Only Master Jinn gets sick and Obi-Wan goes alone. Unbeknownst to them, but knownst to us, their food has been drugged and things happen. (This is for Day 11- Sex Pollen|Threesome… shhhhh I know I’m late)

So I’m trying to get some stuff done for kinktober then back to the WIPs

Monday, it was 7k, and I knew I had a few more things to add and it’d be done. So I figured I’ll post it Tuesday.

Wednesday, the fic is now 11k words! I don’t know how. I’ve lost all control over this fic.

Btw the fic is uh. Well it’s a dead dove and it features Obi-Wan.

(WalWaPo makes you jump through like three separate hoops before you can read the article, so I will share some of the highlights:

Walnut was born in a species-recovery breeding program in the 1980′s. The program had crane chicks hand-raised by human volunteers, and at that time they did not fully understand the measures necessary make sure that the chicks do not imprint on humans and retain their identity as cranes.

As a result, her keepers believe, Walnut does not recognize other cranes as members of her own species.

It has not been proven that Walnut killed her previous suitors; however, there is a persistent rumor in the white-naped-crane-conservation community that she did.

Because this species is highly endangered, and the gene pool of the captive population is small, it’s pretty important for the survival of her species that Walnut A) mate, and B) not kill a bunch of other cranes.

The actual name of the keeper is Chris Crowe.

They both arrived at the Smithsonian Conservation Biology Institute in 2004.

Walnut immediately began paying special attention to Chris--and ignoring the eligible male crane in a nearby enclosure.

Walnut initiated their courtship, performing the opening moves of a mating dance.

Chris realized that if he reciprocated the mating dance, it might be possible to artificially inseminate Walnut with her participation and consent. (The process normally involves restraining the bird.)

It worked!

Chris and Walnut have had five children, who were raised by other crane couples at the facility--sometimes the biological dad and his mate--both because it’s unclear whether Walnut would accept the chicks as her own, and because Chris is not equipped to be a Crane Dad.

However, the Institute provides her with artificial eggs to sit on, and Chris takes his turn looking after them. (This would not work with real eggs because he can’t sit on them properly, but Walnut seems to feel that he is on the job if he just stands over them.)

Chris accepts that he is pretty much married to this bird. White-naped cranes live to be about 60, and they mate for life, so he knows he can’t retire while Walnut is alive. (At the time of the article, Walnut was 36, and Chris 42.)

I regret being the bearer of bad news, but I thought it should be shared that Walnut passed away in January of this year (2024). There's a lot of mixed info about the lifespan of cranes (due to people misunderstanding what a median is...) but the average for most species I know of is 20-30 years (in the wild if nothing eats them/they don't die young), and 30-45 in captivity, with the oldest known white-naped crane having loved to be 46. Given that she was 42, this old gal did good, and I'm certain she will be missed by folks here.

I love hearing what y'all's favorite stories are, and I liked the idea of sharing which one's are mine too.

(Also, these are in no particular order.)

Back Against the Wall Gosh, this one. I had so much fun writing it. And there is such potential for more. Like this could be an 80k story with plot and porn and such goodness. I have so many thoughts about this story.

The Golden Eyed Warrior My first long fic! Yes, like 75% of it is smut but who cares. I wrote a longfic! And I like that the relationship isn't all sunshine and rainbows.

Cabur'ika I actually really like the first scene of them getting together. I love Jango being so mad at first but then he is absolutely smitten with Obi-Wan and will honestly do anything for him. Also, the scene in chapter 3 is one of my favorites.

One Last Night of Fun Okay, so technically this is a joint fic. But I'm still really proud of how this turned out. I also like that Wander loved it so much that she wouldn't it let it go to the fanfic graveyard.

Take Away My Braid Ohhhh this one was fun to write. I was going for something short but it ballooned. I really like sweet, innocent Obi-Wan in this and Jango who wants to be a good partner. It was fun working the padawan braid into the fic.

The War Prize So this was only supposed to be a one shot, like a lot of my fics, but then it grew legs. Oh the romance that goes on between the three. And Obi-Wan being absolutely oblivious. I have so many ideas for this fic.

Passion and Propriety So, I know this says Victorian, but I'mma be honest. I'm a history person and my favorite time period to read is Tudor England. So that time period inspired this fic. There is one more piece that I need to post, this one is from Jango's POV. So it's kinda funny, we get a bunch of Obi-Wan POV's and we're gonna finally get Jango's.

Think of the Republic This was the first one that I wrote, I think. I really was trying to so hard to stay in one person's POV (until the switch to the other character)

Sithywan and Mand'alor Fett Okay, like Sithywan and Mand'alor Jango Fett, you know these two would be great together. And I just love the idea that Obi-Wan can relax and be himself around Jango.

The Chronicles of Big Jim Ah yes! The big guy! The scary guy! Big Jim! He was a blast to write as well. There's almost a particular cadence to his voice too. He's all knowing but still in a way, innocent.

I hope you're having a great weekend, so before I go to work I wanted to ask if you're going to update the 'Only For A Night' fanfic on AO3? I've lost count of how many times I've reread it, even though it's only one chapter long!!! I really love your Omega Obi-wan fanfics!!! I have to say one of my favorites is 'Like Nature Intended' even though I'd like to see the other clones' reaction to finding out that Obi-wan wants them too. I'm also interested in knowing what will happen in the fanfic 'One of Us'!

There are plans for more for “Only For A Night”. I’ve got bad adhd so brain likes to jump to new stories. I’m trying to work on a piece for Wander and I wanna finish “Tracy’ika” so those are taking priority.

As for “One of Us”, and well any fic I’ve written, if you message me directly and ask for spoilers, I’ll share the story plans with you. I just don’t wanna share them publicly and someone get unwanted and accidentally spoiled.
