I've read this one too and I generally recommend it as it is indeed well sourced and informative, but it is somewhat marred in part by being 20 years old but by being written by a cishet scholar, because Dr. Robb reaches some at occasion really weird and embarrassing conclusions due to his lack of life reference, and is confused by anything that isn't a 0 or a 6 on the Kinsey scale and any identity that isn't cis.

This work could be much improved if he would only have discovered that:

Bi people existed in the 19th century.

2. Trans people existed in the 19th century.

2a. Nonbinary people existed in the 19th century.

I really wish that someone, either Dr. Robb himself or another scholar, would revisit it today especially in regards to gender identities outside the binary but even just taking into account the existence of binary trans people and bi people would greatly improve many of his conclusions.

OKAY I have a headcanon about this opening, which is that Holmes and Watson had a big argument and Holmes left London in a fit of pique. He worked himself to a breakdown, crashed hard, and checked into the nearest hotel, intending to recover on his own…but some bellhop or maid was a fan of Watson’s writings and sent the telegram and then Watson TRAVELLED 500 MILES IN A DAY TO GET TO HIM anyway that’s why I drew it like that.
