Tony Stark was less than pleased to find out Peter Parker was average.

Painfully average, really. He had a perfect 50% in his last 8 tests. He was… well, he was almost too average.

So, Tony looked into it. Discovered that on one of his tests, the kid answered every other question correct. In another, he answered the first half correct and the second half wrong. It didn’t make any sense - the kid was answering questions in the first half and then unable to answer basically the same questions in the second half.

Tony thought he had him, when he saw a pattern. He thought he’d caught him in the act, purposefully controlling his grade.

But his pattern changed and suddenly the kid got a 48%, the answers seemingly all over the place. He was annoyed, frustrated, and confused when he asked FRIDAY to check for any sign of a pattern.

He didn’t expect her to come back saying the kid had managed to answer his test by writing in morse code.

“Well, what does it say?”

And FRIDAY hesitated. Honest to god, hesitated, before finally saying, “It reads ‘leave me alone you stalker bitch’.”

And Tony…

Well, Tony is thrilled.

This is legitimately useful reframing. A while ago I started replacing the word "cop" in my vocabulary with "a man with a gun." It really puts things into perspective.

This homeless person is making me uncomfortable. Should I call [a man with a gun]?

My neighbor is having a loud party. Should I get [a man with a gun] involved?

There are some teenagers skateboarding. Do you think [a man with a gun] would get rid of them for me?

It makes it very clear what you're saying. I can call a man with a gun to threaten or hurt someone mildly inconveniencing me. You're not calling the cops, you're calling A MAN WITH A GUN into a situation that does not warrant a firearm handled by a volatile lunatic who will not be held accountable for his actions.

🛠️ Writing Tip: No Scene Is Ever Truly Neutral

Not every scene needs high drama. But every scene should shift something.

A “quiet” moment can still reposition your characters:

– A confidante pulls away

– A threat is implied but not voiced

– A loyalty is tested and doesn’t break… this time

– Someone smiles, but only for show

If nothing changes, it’s not a scene. It’s a pause.

Let each scene move the story forward, even slightly. That’s what keeps quiet moments alive.

Repositioning your characters or moving the story forward doesn't need to be negative, either.

Your character gets the chance to eat or sleep for the first time in days, so now they can think clearly again.

Someone sees something that reminds them what they're fighting for

Two characters share a quiet moment that eases some tension

Friends share a meal, helping build the bonds that they rely on later in the story

Easing tension can, at the right moment, be just as impactful to the story as building it.
