They're understanding everything
this is one of my favorite adventure time clips for the sheer density of nonsense per second delivered in the most deadpan voice imaginable
how to start reading again
from someone who was a voracious reader until high school and is now getting back into it in her twenties.
start with an old favourite. even though it felt a little silly, i re-read the harry potter series one christmas and it wiped away my worry that i wasn't capable of reading anymore. they are long books, but i was still able to get completely immersed and to read just as fast as i had years and years ago.
don't be afraid of "easier" books. before high school i was reading the french existentialists, but when getting back into reading, i picked up lucinda riley and sally rooney. not my favourite authors by far, but easier to read while not being totally terrible. i needed to remind myself that only choosing classics would not make me a better or smarter person. if a book requires a slower pace of reading to be understood, it's easier to just drop it, which is exactly what i wanted to avoid at first.
go for essays and short stories. no need to explain this one: the shorter the whole, the less daunting it is. i definitely avoided all books over 350 pages at first and stuck to essay collections until i suddenly devoured donna tartt's goldfinch.
remember it's okay not to finish. i was one of those people who finished every book they started, but not anymore! if i pick up a book at the library and after a few chapters realise i'd rather not read it, i just return it. (another good reason to use your local library! no money spent on books you might end up disliking.)
analyse — or don't. some people enjoy reading more when they take notes or really stop to think about the contents. for me, at first, it was more important to build the habit of reading, and the thought of analysing what i read felt daunting. once i let go of that expectation, i realised i naturally analyse and process what i read anyway.
read when you would usually use your phone. just as i did when i was a child, i try to read when eating, in the bathroom, on public transport, right before sleeping. i even read when i walk, because that's normally a time i stare at my screen anyway. those few pages you read when you brush your teeth and wait for a friend very quickly stack up.
finish the chapter. if you have time, try to finish the part you're reading before closing the book. usually i find i actually don't want to stop reading once i get to the end of a chapter — and if i do, it feels like a good place to pick up again later.
try different languages. i was quickly approaching a reading slump towards the end of my exchange year, until i realised i had only had access to books in english and that, despite my fluency, i was tired of the language. so as soon as i got back home i started picking up books in my native tongue, which made reading feel much easier and more fun again! after some nine months, i'm starting to read in english again without it feeling like a huge task.
forget what's popular. i thought social media would be a fun way to find interesting books to read, but i quickly grew frustrated after hating every single book i picked up on some influencer's recommendation. it's certainly more time-consuming to find new books on your own, but this way i don't despise every novel i pick up.
remember it isn't about quantity. the online book community's endless posts about reading 150 books each year or 6 books in a single day easily make us feel like we're slow, bad readers, but here's the thing: it does not matter at all how many books you read or what your reading pace is. we all lead different lives, just be proud of yourself for reading at all!
stop stressing about it. we all know why reading is important, and since the pandemic reading has become an even more popular hobby than it was before (which is wonderful!). however, there's no need to force yourself to be "a reader". pick up a book every now and then and keep reading if you enjoy it, but not reading regularly doesn't make you any less of a good person. i find the pressure to become "a person who reads" or to rediscover my inner bookworm only distances me from the very act of reading.
It is fine for a person to work for this world,
ولكن دون أن ينسى آخرته but without forgetting his Hereafter!
ولا بأس أن يجعل بيته جميلاً and it is fine to make his house beautiful,
ولكن دون أن ينسى قبره but without forgetting his grave!

Oh, Clippy, we’re really in it now…
shoutout to the one dude who was doing a presentation in my class and was about to explain a specific topic, and said "let me break it down for you" and just started breakdancing. in the middle of his presentation. and then continued on with the presentation as normal. dude's a legend. this is a university class btw
“meme” is now the generic term for “stuff on the internet” btw. funny comments on Reddit? memes. funny posts on Tumblr? memes. Good tiktoks? oxymoron, but memes. Your great aunt’s anti-vax conspiracy theories on Facebook? memes. The homepage of The New York Times? memes, baby!

“It’s all memes?”

Don’t take statements you make online (and in Da’wah generally) with ease, and never feel safe from being tested with them. Don’t take your words lightly, and don’t think you won’t be made to prove them. When you talk the talk, prepare to walk the walk.
You may preach about Fitnah one day, and be tested with it the next.
You may give a general advice, and wake up among its intended audience.
You may speak a word without giving it much thought, and then be given an immediate opportunity to prove yourself regarding it.
I speak from personal experience when I say that sometimes one is tested for YEARS with regards to a statement he may have made or a stance he may have taken. Sometimes one is tested AFTER years, for a statement he made years ago. Sometimes he’s tested literally the next day. Sometimes he faces the hardest trials in his life immediately after he had given advice regarding the very same trial (despite possibly never having experienced it before).
I swear by Allāh, sometimes I post general reminders and reflections on a matter not personally relevant to my life, and I go to sleep, only to wake up and see that Allāh has bought those matters before me and made them personally relevant now.
Not to be misunderstood, I’m not saying you will be immediately punished due to your statements, but rather that you will be given the chance to prove yourself regarding your speech, and it will often take you by surprise. So beware and don’t stumble or falter.
Always ask Allāh to make you a man true to your words, and to be given Tawfeeq to recognize your trials immediately so that you may succeed in navigating them in a manner that pleases Him. If we fail, then what an ultimate failure and what a shame that we couldn’t live up to our words. One fears upon himself to be included in the Āyah:
أَتَأْمُرُونَ ٱلنَّاسَ بِٱلْبِرِّ وَتَنسَوْنَ أَنفُسَكُمْ وَأَنتُمْ تَتْلُونَ ٱلْكِتَـٰبَ ۚ أَفَلَا تَعْقِلُونَ

The last time I managed to film a cattle egret neck swaying, my camera frustratingly cut out right before the actual strike. I am finally making it up to y’all with this highly satisfying wiggle and execution!
As mentioned last time, this neck swaying (also called head swaying) behavior is believed to give a bird parallax so they can strike at a prey item more accurately. As you can see from this egret snatching an unsuspecting bug- sometimes the silly wiggle pays off! Read more about neck swaying and similar bird behaviors here.
Getting a t-shirt that says
DO NOT TRUST ME TO LEAD THE WAY OR NAVIGATE NO MATTER HOW CONFIDENT I SEEM ABOUT THE DIRECTION WE ARE GOING
on the front, and
IF YOU CAN READ THIS, YOU ALREADY FUCKED UP
on the back.
When you’re uniquely and authentically you, you attract like-minded people that are meant for you. That’s why when you’re unhealed or insecure you attract the wrong people. If you’re a butterfly but care what moths think of you and try to act like a moth, you attract moths. If you take a step back, get to know yourself, and embrace who you really are, then and only then will you align with those that you’re meant to align with. Think about it, how can your future companion or friends find you if you’re disguised as someone else? Be unapologetically you, love yourself, heal yourself, and let go of the need for validation from others. Not only will you feel more free and become more confident, but you’ll become magnetic towards the people that were always meant to find you. Once you’re truly yourself and confident in your own skin, it will be as if everything is in black and white, and you’re the only thing in color to the right people.
If you’re new here, hello and welcome ^.^ To everyone reading this, I love you and I truly believe we were meant to cross paths even if it’s fleeting and this message is our the first and last connection. I want to remind you how insanely magical you are and how improbable and rare your existence is. Going back 1 million years to early humans, it took billions of perfect pairings that all had to succeed. If even one of your ancestors didn’t have kids, you wouldn’t exist. At conception, up to 300 million sperm are released and fight to reach the egg, the odds are literally 1 in 300 million, and you essentially won. The probability of you existing at all comes out to 1 in 10^2,685,000. For comparison, the number of atoms in the known universe is around 10^80. Combining the odds of conception, and your continued survival all the way up until this moment, the chance of you existing exactly as you are is basically zero, and yet, here you are. Whether you’re religious, atheist, spiritual, regardless your existence is rare, which makes it extraordinary and meaningful. If you’re ever doubting your worth or direction in life, just remember how incredible your existence is, and only you can decide what you will do with it in your limited time here. Will you devote your life to exploration? research? family? Only you know your true passions and purpose. I hope you find it. Good luck <3
What are your thoughts on will, destiny & purpose
I am not fully certain, I don’t 100% believe or disbelieve anything, because nothing is proven beyond what we see in the material world. I lean more toward a more spiritual belief, where we all have free will & shape our own destiny as we go, but I also think everyone is born with a main purpose or multiple purposes. I also think we all agree to come here before birth with a unique plan—whether it’s to evolve & grow as a soul, to help others by guiding them through something specific they need, to heal or create change throughout the collective, or simply to explore & have an amazing adventure. Souls probably come here for many different reasons, each unique & special. Or maybe some come without a choice in order to learn lessons they missed in past lives or in other forms they once had. I do think some souls probably choose to come to live as a human & simply experience life. Others may have a more profound purpose to heal & help, kinda like guardian angels. It’s all fluid, nothing is proven or disproven. The fact that we meet certain people & click instantly would align with this belief, because their soul is probably familiar & we were meant to meet for a certain reason even if it’s just one fleeting conversation. We probably have a lot of different callings, but that doesn’t mean everything is set in stone or that our choices are predetermined. I think we do have free will in each moment to fulfill what we’re meant to fulfill.
