i dog and i dog on grrm but every time i go on that damn subreddit i get so defensive of that old man. oh you think it's so easy? you think it's all fun and games to write a thousand page book in a multipov multicontinental densely structured narrative setting with all the world's eyes on you? go ahead u/chudmeister0621 pick the pen we're all waiting
the situation with harry potter is kind of unprecedented in some ways imo because it is maybe the largest media franchise in history to be created & owned by a single person who still has direct creative control over it. who is also a billionaire with significant cultural/political influence. like the usual "no ethical consumption under capitalism" type excuses shatter on impact when the bigoted author in question is logging onto twitter every day saying explicitly that when you buy the tim hortons ravenclaw donut she is using your donut money to fund the genocide of trans people. like with big franchises usually there's at least a little more diffusion of responsibility than this
a ton of people have unexpectedly followed me over the last 2 days so here is my rent-lowering gunshot:
the american south is the most racially diverse and poorest region of the united states, and any political sentiment that treats the south is stupid or expendable is inherently racist and classist. a lot of y'all are racist and classist. the south is also the heart of american culture. argue with a wall. you cannot deny that everybody in the entire world does not emulate artists from atlanta. there is vested interest in keeping the south poor and uneducated BECAUSE this is the most racially diverse region in this country. if you actually give a fuck about progress, you would fight for the south, not mock us.
These pescatarian birds are directly exposed to PFAS contamination due to the island's position near the St. Lawrence Seaway.
Over fifty years of data show a peak in PFAS (also known as "forever chemicals") content in seabird eggs in the 90s, followed by a decrease as regulations went into effect. The most recent findings show a 70% decrease of most common PFAS.
While continued vigilance a regulation is needed, this data indicates that regulations are working to reduce PFAS concentrations in marine ecosystems.
Yes!!!! I did a review of literature on PFASs in human drinking water about half a year ago, and there is a lot of really good progress! Please celebrate this, please don't let this solution be forgotten (at least so quickly) as the ozone layer or acid rain.
We are making genuine progress! Producers are dramatically altering how much they use PFAS and how much gets released in effluent, but also there's a lot better understanding of how to remove PFAS from the environment!
Environmental problems CAN BE SOLVED.
op disabled reblogs but I think the point still stands
reminder that the books themselves also suck ass actually. there's an entire plotline endorsing slavery. the one character who advocates to end slavery is bullied and made fun of. the one slave who doesnt like being enslaved is bullied and treated as an outcast. the bankers are the picture of racist stereotypes of jewish people. the one asian character is named fckn Cho Chang. the worldbuilding SUCKS. fuck harry potter and fuck rowling. stop giving her your money.
Cartoon on the female tight dress style of the late 1870s, which also satirizes male formal military uniforms. By George Du Maurier in Punch, May 25th 1878. A variation on the classic theme of a young lady dropping her handkerchief...
Caption: The New Hussar Hessians and Pants
Lady: See, I've dropped my handkerchief, Captain de Vere!
Gentleman: I know you have, Miss Constance. I'm very sorry. I can't stoop either!
Shades of 'An Exquisite alias Dandy in Distress' (c. 1810s):
This sort of problem persisted into the 1850s, with a John Leech cartoon of a fashionable swell who is unable to pick up his umbrellaw umbrella:
On the second image:
A Correspondent furnishes us with the following Picture of an Exquisite alias a Dancy in distress: "Walking in one of the squares last week it was my fate to follow an Exquisite - stocked and stayed [??] and bound collared and pilloried in all the fashion so slender so straight and so stiff that a man of ordinary strength might have used it as a walking stick. This thing flourishing a very nice perfumed handkerchief happened to let it drop: the question then was how to get it up again; stoop it could not, and I confess I enjoyed its distress; for tho' for any other female I would have raised the handkerchief with alacrity, I wished to see how this creature would help itself. Then thus it was: having eyed the handkerchief askance, something like a Magpie peeping into a marrow-bone, it gently spraddled out its legs, and lowering the body between them it brought the left hand in contact with the object sought. What shall we say to the association of ideas, when I assure you, that looking on this unmanly figure, brought into my mind the knights of old, who when once unhorsed, could never from the weight and stiffness of their armour hope to mountain again." NB [nota bene, or note well:]. It is found remarkably convenient in such a case for the exquisite to carry a cane or stick with a hook at the end, as he may fish up any thing he unfortunately drops without breaking his back or exciting the pity or risibility of the spectators.
Because dandies were often considered to be not masculine enough to be men, they were discussed mockingly as a third sex, and the dandy in this story is described with the pronoun "it" instead of "he" or "she".
everyone's like wehhhhh why doesn't doctor house gets suuuueeed! like my man. literally every patient he sees is someone that's been trying to find a diagnosis for ages. i could live with a little medical malpractice if it were coming from someone ready to break into my home to look for allergens and not simply half heartedly listen to me before suggesting I lose weight and take ages of back and forth arguing to order a single test
"it's medical malpractice" have u ever been a doctor? most medicine is malpractice. let the man limp around chewing vicodin doing 50 invasive tests please
Once Taub (derogatory) derisively said about a patient with unexplained chronic pain “7 doctors couldn’t find anything wrong with him, what does that mean?” and House replied without even thinking “it means they’re idiots” and proceed to work his ass off to diagnose the patient Taub wanted to write off as a faker or something. If a doctor had said that when that patient was ME, I wouldn’t dream of suing them in a million years
Edit to add: i dont know what it says about me that i had to look up rouge the bat but can draw hugh laurie from memory

common advice for social anxiety is to tell yourself "people aren't going to think less of you just because you said something a bit daft" but the thing is. sometimes they will. and you just have to learn to be cool with that and to treat it as a dnd random encounter rather than letting it ruin your whole day
