Whumptober - ALL DAYS!
So this year I'm participating in a writing Big Bang event and I've sadly had 0 time to devote to writing proper fics for this year's @whumptober.
HOWEVER!!!!!
I wasn't going to let that stop me from participating and being a completionist đ
So I've written up a detailed outline of a full story I will work on and finish after this Big Bang, and have included/indicated each prompt I'm fulfilling in their corresponding place.
So without further ado, I present to you:
My Post-Rebels AU (another one)
So this takes place immediately after the purrgils take the Chimaera into hyperspace with Thrawn and Ezra aboard.
Itâs taking all of Ezraâs focus and power to control their flight - linking with the purrgils and possibly doing something to keep space from coming through the broken bridge windows. Heâs also dealing with the GUNSHOT BLASTER WOUND (31) So when heâs PUSHED BEYOND HIS BREAKING POINT (7) the purrgils sense that and drop them into the atmosphere of the closest planet.
Ezra collapses, unconscious. Thrawn is released and clutches his bruised ribs. He has lots of bruises on his arms and chest from the purrgilâs tentacles which is a form of INTERNAL BLEEDING (17). He remembers the PROPHECY (2) from the Bendu about his defeat âLike many arms surrounding you in a cold embrace.â The Chimaera is losing altitude and Thrawn has to sort of fall into the crew pit to activate the reverse thrustersâŠwhich arenât all working. They crash land on a cliff, but theyâre stable.Â
Thrawn starts running a diagnostic (which will take a long time) and also tries to find out where they are, but theyâre in uncharted territory deep in wild space, so they have no way to navigate back home. That means that Ezra is their only way home through his connection with the purrgils, so they need him alive.
Some of the deck crew start to wake up and he tasks them with finishing the diagnostic and working on getting them back in the air. He and the death trooper take Ezra to the brig to contain him, but on the way there, Ezra is able to get away, Thrawn chases him, and they both wind up in an escape pod.
During their struggle, the pod takes flight and goes suuuuper far, over a large body of water, and flying every which way as they bump against the controls. At one point, Thrawn throws Ezra across the controls and the pod lurches into a COLLISION COURSE (25) with a mountain and heâs able to move them just in time to only be dealt a glancing blow, but itâs enough to cause the pod to spiral out of control and they crash land. Again.
Ezra wakes up DISORIENTED (16), CONCUSSED (1 - ALT), and being HELD AT GUNPOINT BLASTERPOINT (8) by Thrawn. Thrawn woke up first with a sprained wrist and had already made himself a MAKESHIFT SPLINT (21) to help stabilize it. They discuss their situation: theyâre ON THEIR OWN, LOST IN THE WILD (19), TRAPPED WITH THE ENEMY (7), far from the Chimaera, far from the known galaxy, Ezraâs the only way back home, so Thrawn needs him alive. Ezraâs like âNope! Not helping you!â, Thrawnâs like âI have the blaster, so yes. And if you want to survive and see your friends again, this is the only choice you have.â
Ezra tried to call on the ForceâŠbut somethingâs strange. Itâs there, but thereâs interference, like static thatâs blocking a clear connection to the Force and itâs kinda painful.
E: âGha! Itâs so loud! Donât you hear that?â
T: âThe level of noise coming from the fauna in the jungle around us is present, but hardly overwhelming.â
This planet is home to many Force-sensitive animals, but there are plants that can negate that, so the sentient beings on the planet use them to trap/hunt those animals. This area has many of those plants and theyâre affecting Ezra. So he is experiencing a LOSS OF POWERS (4) caused by ENVIRONMENTAL WHUMP (18).
So now knowing that Thrawn truly has the upper hand right now, Ezra has no choice but to make a DEAL WITH THE DEVIL (3 - ALT).
E: âOkay, so how exactly are we supposed to get back to the ship? Iâm pretty sure we crossed a sea on our way here and who knows whatâs out there that might think weâd make a tasty meal!â
T: âSurviving and navigating in the wilderness is not an issue for me. IâVE DONE THIS BEFORE.â (4)
Bit of a time jump, theyâve been traveling for a little a few days, allowing them time to talk. Through the snark and insults Ezra throws Thrawnâs way (because what else are you going to say to the guy who is your enemy?), Ezra does end up learning a bit more about Thrawn, seeing that maybe heâs not just plain evil, that none of the things heâs done to the Rebels is personal for him, that he doesnât entirely align with the Empire, that there just might be something or someone else heâs trying to protect through his actions. Things are subtle, nothing is said outright, but it at least makes Ezra think.
They come to the shore of the sea Ezra saw while they were fighting in the escape pod. The plants have started to thin and in fact arenât found around surface water - seas, lakes, rivers, streams, etc⊠And because there are none of those Force-negating plants hereâŠthat means Force-sensitive animals are*. Including a big creature on all fours that can go bipedal and has opposable thumbs and large claws.
*(Because people and animals need water to survive, this is how the Force-sensitive animals are able to get them, because they stick around the water where the plants arenât but their prey ends up coming to them. Just some world-building stuff)
Ezra goes âHuh, THATâS NEW (20),â and heâs been noticing that the interference has been steadily fading for a bit (also allowing him to maybe connect with Thrawn a bit and sense his thoughts and feelings, thereby lessening the utter contempt and hatred he has for the Chiss) and is now basically gone, but heâs been biding his time to make his move. Heâs pretty good with connecting with animals, so he sees this as his chance to get away, to use this animal as a distraction. Heâs wrong.
The second Ezra tries to make a Force connection with the creature, it goes on the offensive. It thinks itâs being attacked and so responds in kind. Itâs closest to Thrawn and so goes after him, which should make Ezra happy because it will let him escape, heâs too much of a good person and can see that Thrawn will be ripped to shreds. So he does a SELF-SACRIFICE (22) move and pushes Thrawn out of the way just in time for the creature to swipe at him, opening up some bad gashes on his side/torso. He goes flying a bit and lands against a rock wall. The creature is super quick and is there in an instant, grabbing Ezra in its hand (remember: opposable thumbs) and Ezra gets PINNED TO THE WALL (6).Â
Thrawn comes in to shoot the creature. The creature isnât killed, just wounded and figuring that this is way too much work for a meal, so it drops Ezra and skedaddles off to lick its wounds. And speaking of wounds, Ezra is BLEEDING OUT (31) from his and is not doing great in general. Heâs QUIVERING (5), in a lot of pain, and barely conscious. Thrawn uses his uniform jacket to bind the wounds and staunch the bleeding, with the white fabric quickly getting soaked in red (and I want to see him in that black tanktop we see him in from ep 3x17 because HOT DANG!!!). This isnât the safest place to be right now, so Thrawn gets them out of there - arm across shoulder with Ezra doing his best to not drag his feet (and failing)? Bridal carry? Firemanâs cary? Decisions, decisionsâŠ*
*(an alternative idea to this scene is that the creature doesnât run off but is held back a bit by Thrawnâs blaster, giving Thrawn enough time to get to Ezraâs side, tell him to âHOLD TAKE MY HANDâ (ALT - for ALTâs sake, no number) to help get him to his feet so they can hightail it out of there. The creature comes after them but stops once they reach a large concentration of those anti-Force plants).
Ezra wakes up in some old RUINS (18) with Thrawn tending to him. âHOWâD I GET TO THIS PLACE?â (23) Ezra asks, and Thrawn explains. They stay here for a little while, maybe a few days while Ezra heals up a bit, and this is when some real discussion starts to happen. Thrawn is surprised that Ezra would risk his life for him; Ezra is surprised that, even though needing him alive, Thrawn is gentle and careful with his wounds, like heâs a person and not an asset. Also to note, Thrawn has figured out the whole anti-Force plant thing (the creature ran parallel to the shore, not deeper into the jungle where it could have gotten better coverage, the way Ezraâs Force abilities came back when those plants werenât around but are gone now when they are and itâs the only common denominator, plus some other clues only Thrawn would notice - OR, if going with the above alternative scenario: Thrawn noticed when the creature stopped chasing them and made the connection that way), and it turns out these plants are also highly flammable and good for making a quick camping fire. This becomes important later. But because this is a whump story, their respite doesnât last too long.Â
Because it turns out these ruins are actually a SACRED PLACE (12) for the alien natives [NON-HUMAN WHUMPERS (4)] that they make a weekly/monthly journey to and lo and behold they find an intruder sleeping in their holy location (very Goldilocks coded :P )! Ezra wakes up at their arrival and shouting (with Thrawn nowhere to be found) and tries his best to stand and fend them off (made harder because theyâre back amid the plants and he canât use the Force to attack/defend, though that doesnât stop him from automatically reaching for them and getting that additional pain added to the list heâs feeling right now). The natives realize theyâre dealing with a Force user and know how to counter this (given their experience hunting Force-sensative animals - they themselves donât have the Force and this is the first time theyâve met a sentient being who can wield it). So they throw something at Ezra and he gets CAUGHT IN AN ANTI-FORCE NET (6) made of those plants (and maybe theyâre made more potent somehow due to something the natives do to them?). It all becomes too much for Ezra and he passes out again.
The natives take him back to their home which is by a stream, but pretty much everything is made from those plants so they donât have to worry about the Force-sensitive animals. Thereâs a language barrier and Ezra canât communicate with them and the natives are trying to figure out what to do with himâŠwhen Thrawn arrives, also seemingly captured. Ezra decries his FAILED RESCUE ATTEMPT (15), but Thrawn counters that itâs not failed at all in that calm, cool, and collected way that Thrawn is so good at. Heâs got a trick up his non-existent sleeve (heâs still in his tank top, yay!). He was keeping watch ON PATROL (19) and noticed the natives approaching their campsite. Thereâs too many for him to take on his own, so he decides it would be a good idea to let them take Ezra, follow them to find their village, scout around for a bit, and then let himself get captured so he could be brought in and not have to deal with sneakily infiltrating the place, and also get brought right to Ezra instead of having to search for him. Ezra is of course none too happy about being used as bait, but Thrawn assures him that if theyâd made an attempt to kill him, Thrawn would have intervened. E - âOh, like that makes it any better!â
So now that Thrawn is in position, he has a CONFRONTATION (30) with the natives (maybe they speak a trade language Thrawn knows? Or itâs a similar enough language that you can kinda sorta get the meaning across?), threatening to BURN THEIR VILLAGE DOWN (30) if they donât release them. The natives refuse, calling Thrawnâs bluffâŠbut itâs no bluff. Somehow, someway, Thrawn starts a fire (maybe with his concealed blaster they didnât find/confiscate, heâs timed an explosion or triggers one with his comm that he made from whatever supplies theyâd brought with them from the escape pod, or through some other way heâs figured out). The fire spreads quickly and soon the whole village is up in flames. Ezra is now RESCUED BY THE ENEMY (31), but is horrified that Thrawn would do this. However, this is true to form for Thrawn, because nothing and no one will get in the way of what he needs to save his people, and right now thatâs getting Ezra out of there so he can get them back to the Empire.
However, thereâs an unexpected turn of events as the creature from before comes in and crashes the party (plants are burned and theyâre near water, so itâs clobbering time!). Everything is in absolute bedlam right now. Thereâs fire, a creature thatâs attacking anything it sees, natives who are trying to fend off the creature, natives who are trying to attack/kill/recapture Ezra and Thrawn. Ezra can use the Force now, which is helpful, but even though heâs healed a bit, the rough treatment opened up some of his wounds and heâs still pretty weak.Â
Ezra is close to unconsciousness again, but sees Thrawn fighting the natives, similarly to when he saw him sparring with the droids (again, back in 3x17). But this time thereâs an extra fierceness and tenacity to his attacks that Ezra hadnât seen then, one that almost scares him. Soon Thrawn is the LAST ONE STANDING (29) and is making his way (though stumbling a bit) back to Ezra, who is already FAINTING (29).
Once again, Ezra wakes up somewhere else being tended to by Thrawn, whoâs KNEELING (21) over him. Some quippy remark about him not wanting this to become a habit. Theyâre in a cave with a curtain of those plants across the entrance to keep the Force-sensative creatures away. Ezraâs doing better this time, more alert, the pain is less, and he noticed that itâs Thrawn who actually doesnât seem to be doing well - maybe his breath is a bit shaky, he drops or fumbles things, he sways on his feet, etc. This WOUNDED CARETAKER (14) is IGNORING AN ILLNESS INJURY (14)! Ezra calls him out on it, Thrawn insists heâll be fine, but makes a FORCED REVEAL (11) of Thrawnâs HIDDEN INJURY (11) that turns out to be a LACERATION (11) Thrawn got while fighting with the natives. The blade they used (either knife or spear or something) cut him somewhere (arm, let, torso?), though not deeply. And during this reveal, Ezra TOUCHES (9) Thrawn and finds that his skin is SCALDING (9) hot! Heâs got a VIRAL (26 - ALT) infection!! And as is the case with all forced reveals, once it is, the SYMPTOMATIC (20) whumpee get worse and takes a turn for the worse soon thereafter (because of course ;) ). So cue Thrawn succumbing to his fever and passing out (now making Ezra the wounded caretaker - the whumped tending the whumped, hehe).
Ezra keeps a BEDSIDE VIGIL (27) by Thrawn as the fever takes hold. This fever makes Thrawn have nightmares/hallucinations, including one of Thrass (because I also enjoy pain đ). In this nightmare/hallucination, Thrass is scolding Thrawn about the choices heâs made and Thrawn is pleading his case. Itâs very emotional. At one point, Thrass says âI could always see straight through youâ (28), meaning heâs not buying whatever explanations/excuses Thrawn is giving. While this wouldnât be something the real Thrass would probably know and definitely not say like this, the Thrass conjured by Thrawnâs fevered mind absolutely does. Heâs created by Thrawnâs own doubts and insecurities and fears. Bring on the angst and the REPRESSED TRAUMA (16)!!!
So when Thrawn finally wakes up, he sees Ezra holding the ring Uingali had given him. Ezra found it in Thrawnâs pocket while he was tending to him. Ezra notices that the INSIGNIA (13) is similar to the one on the underbelly of the Chimeara. When Ezra asks Thrawn about it, wondering if itâs something related to his people, Thrawn starts to open up about his SECRETS (10). The mental conversation he had with hallucination-Thrass is still very much on his mind and heâs still feverish, so his defenses are down a bit as well. Maybe heâs considering whether or not EVERY means truly justifies his ends.
T - âIt is not a design used by my people. That ring was given to me by an ally. A friend.â
E - âYou have friends?â (doubtful, slightly mocking)
They talk a bit more, and at some point Thrawn says âI must confess that I feel like a monsterâ (24) and something about being beyond REDEMPTION (17), talking about some of the things heâs done and, more importantly, why heâs done it. He tells Ezra that heâs doing all of this to save his people from a larger threat. But he confesses that heâs not the man he used to be. The Thrawn back then wouldnât have fired on innocent civiliansâŠwould he? He canât help but feel like the time in the Empire has changed him. Or maybe not changed. Maybe just made him more of who he truly is.Â
Perhaps Ezra can give some insight into what he felt when he was talking with the Emperor, even through a hologram. Heâd felt that same coldness with Vader and the Inquisitors and those times when he touched the Dark Side. It can twist a person, even those who donât have the Force. Itâs a lovely conversation, one that leads them to becoming more like allies than enemies. Theyâre both wounded and need time to heal, but perhaps they can get out of this thing and get back home together. And maybeâŠmaybe Ezra could help Thrawn save his people (because thatâs the kind of person Ezra is, bless him!). This might also be around when the Chimera is able to send a shuttle to come find them and pick them up. Maybe Thrawn took the tracker out of the escape pod or maybe they were able to find the general location due to the large fire/smoke they saw (yet another reason Thrawn set the village ablaze - signal fire), and once they got close enough, those on the shuttle were able to hail Thrawn on his comm and come and get them.
The EndâŠfor nowâŠ
