The truth has left me no friends
Imam Ali (as)
O, God. Who?
Bismillah
O, God. O, Dear God. O, God of Muhammad.
Who is the company of the eye? Who is the coolness of the eye? Who is the beholder of the eye?
O, God. O, Dear God. O, God of Muhammad.
Who intensifies the thought? Who embellishes the thought? Who has become the thought?
O, God. O, Dear God. O, God of Muhammad.
Who has overcome the heart? Who has decorated the heart? Who has become the heart?
O, God. O, Dear God. O, God of Muhammad.
How does one gaze? How does one think? How does one feel?
O God. O Dear God. O God of Muhammad.
A merciful gaze from you. A good opinion of you. A contented heart with you.
Is wanted. Is necessitated. Is needed.
O, God. O, Dear God. O, God of Muhammad.
Why is there not a lowering? Why is there not a controlling? Why is there not a stability?
Who beholds the eye? Who preoccupies the thought? Who resides within the heart?
O, God. O, Dear God. O, God of Muhammad.
Who cloaks the eye? Who cloaks the thought? Who cloaks the heart?
Who is the green-clothed beheld? Who is the green-clothed figure? Who is the green-clothed beloved?
Who? Who? Who?
O, God. O, Dear God. O, God of Muhammad.
Remove the deafening silence. Remove the breaking absence. Remove the dividing fortress.
Please.
You are the Merciful. You are the Planner. You are the Turner.
O, God. O, Dear God. O, God of Muhammad.
Envision us with Muhammad. Together. Allow us to be like Muhammad. Together. Facilitate us with Muhammad. Together.
Envision us. Make us. Facilitate us.
O, God. O, Dear God. O, God of Muhammad.
O eye, rise! O thought, rise! O heart, rise!
We have been envisioned. We have been allowed, We have been facilitated.
There is lowering. There is controlling. There is stability.
Us. Through him. Seeking You.
Praise be to You, God. Praise be to You, Dear God. Praise be to You, God of Muhammad.

Birthday Poem
We begin with the Loftiest of Names. We praise the Generous Host. We ask for bestowal of prayers and peace upon the Greatest Friend. Through this, the journey begins.
My caramel latte drinking, chai latte disliking friend! Brew allowed us to glue. What should the heart spill? What should the ink disclose? Because, the writer is at the brink.
Good company is food. Costa (and…Caffe Nero!). Moose. 92 degrees. Broasters and so many more. Good company is good.
My caramel latte drinking, chai latte disliking friend!
Good company is life. Our unmemorable childhood, Our halaqa days, Our coffee dates, (and) Our loafering moments. Our companionship is running rife.
My caramel latte drinking, chai latte disliking friend!
Good company is fragrant. You are One Million, Paco Rabbane style (not)! You are Electric Blue, Schwarzkopf style (not)! Let’s hope we’re not flagrant.
My caramel latte drinking, chai latte disliking friend!
Good company is real. Avengers. Doctor Who. Harry Potter. Sherlock Holmes. We are the deal.
My caramel latte drinking, chai latte disliking friend!
Good company is advice. “Ok, ok, ok!” “Can I rant?” “What would you say?” “Argh!!!” Let’s be nice.
My caramel latte drinking, chai latte disliking friend!
Good company is life. It gifts light during the dark day. It extends a hand during a life-less day. It eases the heart during a smirky day. It revives the soul during a suppressive day. Let’s not have strife.
My caramel latte drinking, chai latte disliking friend!
With this, I bid you adieu! In anticipation that a flue has not brew. Forgive me for losing my corkscrew!
My caramel latte drinking, chai latte disliking friend!
Good company is Prophetic. Good company is everybody’s energy. Good company is the soul’s spring. Good company is a life-line. Good company is Zarah Zaman. Good company is magnetic.
My caramel latte drinking, chai latte disliking friend!
We have a lofty hope Of the Generous Host God. As taught by The Greatest Friend Muhammad.
My caramel latte drinking, chai latte disliking friend!
We ask to be hand-held here, We ask to be hand-held there. We ask to be fragrant here, We ask to be fragrant there. We ask to be beautiful here. We ask to be beautiful there.
My caramel latte drinking, chai latte disliking friend!
May we be granted a Muhammadan life. May we be granted a Muhammadan fragrance. May we be granted a Muhammadan reality. May we be granted a Muhammadan advisory. May we granted a Muhammadan hand-hold. May we be granted Muhammad (prayers and peace be upon him).

Everything
I am but a humble slave, what should I worry about? I am but a needy slave, what should I worry about? I am but a destitute slave, what should I worry about?
My Lord is the ‘Most Merciful’ so what need is there for me to worry? My Lord is the ‘Most Generous’ so what need is there for me to worry? My Lord is the ‘Most Compassionate’ so what need is there for me to worry?
Everything is going in the right direction. Everything is beautiful. Everything is perfect. Everything is divine. Everything.
I am but a claimer of love, what should I worry about? I am but a pseudo-lover, what should I worry about? I am but an insincere lover, what should I worry about?
My Master is clement so what need is there for me to worry? My Master is warm-hearted so what need is there for me to worry? My Master is ‘The Praised One’ so what need is there for me to worry?
Everything is going in the right direction. Everything is beautiful. Everything is perfect. Everything is divine. Everything.
O, the one who worries! O, the one who distresses! O, the one who despairs! We are in the best of abodes. We are in the best of banquets. We are in the best of hands.
Everything is going in the right direction. Everything is beautiful. Everything is perfect. Everything is divine. Everything. We are roaming through the abode of the one who says, “Allahumma sallim sallim.” “O God, make it safe, make it safe!” We are dining at the banquet of the one who says, “Allahumma sallim sallim.” “O God, make it safe, make it safe.” We are being reared at the hands of the one who says, “Allahumma sallim sallim.” “O God, make it safe, make it safe.”
Everything is going in the right direction. Everything is beautiful. Everything is perfect. Everything is divine. Everything.
The Beloved, Muhammad, has our backs. Why should we be in a state of worry? The Beloved, Muhammad, has our backs. Why should we be in a state of fear? The Beloved, Muhammad, has our backs. Why should we be in a state of trepidation?
Everything is Divine. Everything is Muhammadan. Everything.
May we know. May we intermingle. May we experience. May we love. May we grow. May we remain. Everything is Divine. Everything is Muhammadan. Everything.

Imitation and Reflection
My academic and life focus is on pedagogy which relates to how a lot of my thoughts brim from an educational perspective, and I hope which will soon turn into a child-centred focus.
I was sitting in a lecture the other day, early as per usual, and my friends were discussing the weekend activities of one of our peers. She’s a mother of 2, a 17 year old and a pre-teen. She’s a very extrovert individual, but maybe not in the best of ways. Let’s call her Sally.
I choose not to dwell too much into the conversations of my friends, if they are bereft of benefit, but they were just going on and on such that it proved difficult to abstain from hearing.
Sally had taken her young daughters for a night out to the town and posted some inappropriate pictures on social media. I had heard other stories which swayed me to believe it but I tried to maintain a good opinion by hoping that it wasn’t her pictures that were posted, or that we had the ages of her daughters mixed up. Anyhow, the story was indeed affirmed by Sally, when she asked why the girls around me were giggling away.
She made comments, such as; “My daughter is turning 18 soon so she will want to go out. I wanted to show her how to do it.” “My girls will get attention from men so I wanted to show them how to react to it.”
“A man can touch me but if he touches my daughters, all hell will break loose.”
The last comment really stuck out to me. I was honestly on the verge of tears and even writing this resonates those same emotions. It made me think and question time and time again, “If you don’t want them to get the wrong attention then why are you introducing them to it?” “Why did you take pictures of yourself inappropriately for them to witness their mother behave like that?”
There’s a profound saying which I fully believe in: Children are a reflection of their parents.
I pray and hope that these girls are protected from all harm and they are allowed to be a reflection of the goodness of their mother and a means for each other’s arrival unto good character.
We bang on and on about the state of the children in society but we fail to realise that we are the conduits of their actions. They see and they do. A deputy headteacher used to repeat: “Do as I say and not as I do.” - Like, what is that about? I visited a Steiner kindergarten and they informed me that in their way of teaching they never explicitly tell a child what to do. They start the activity and an adult will perform the task accurately, such as drawing a dog, but they will not be told that their depiction is wrong. They will eventually see how the adult draws it and realise that is the right way. I found that so empowering as it allows the child to have personal space for growth in emotional, intellectual, and physical areas.
But, this confirms that children copy. This trend runs into adulthood hence the idea of peer pressure.
Coming back to the theme and my reflection of imitation and the loss of innocence. We should be really careful in the way that we carry ourselves for our own excellence but the excellence of the wider community. We reap what we sow, and we are people of intellect who have higher realities than the base reality that we have found ourselves to be in. The remedy is there (not here as here signals ease of reach), but it is whether we will walk the walk of taking it, and that comes from sincerity. Sincerity opens many doors of goodness. I guess, what my reflection in a nutshell is, be careful what you do. Be careful what you promote. Be careful of how you portray yourself. And, if you’re not careful and see negativity in the world, then blame yourself first for having a role. We ask to be shown our faults conjoined with how to rectify them. We are great ambassadors of good character on this earth. We hope that we are human, in the greatest of sense.
