Are advertisers going to infiltrate our dreams?

Major brands like Coors, Microsoft, and Burger King want in on our dreams — and researchers are concerned about it.

In early 2021, Bobbi Gould, a Los Angeles-based travel writer, says she came across a vague ad on Craigslist from a “big brand looking for willing sleepers.”

She’d always been interested in dreams, and the gig paid $1k. So she and her boyfriend decided to sign up.

A few days later, she says she found herself in an old warehouse with 17 other people, hooked up to an EEG machine, surrounded by Molson Coors marketers.

Gould was told to watch the Coors video — complete with hypnotic waterfalls, lush green landscapes, and flashes of Coors products — then doze off to an audio recording of sounds from the video.

Over the next 8 hours, she had a variety of “weird Coors dreams.”

…Coors isn’t the only big brand looking into dreams as potential ad space:

Microsoft has explored ways to make pro gamers dream of their favorite Xbox video games.

Sony’s PlayStation has advertised a new game on the premise that it induces dreams about Tetris.

Burger King rolled out a Halloween-themed burger in 2018 that it claimed was “clinically proven” to induce nightmares.

It also has some interesting medical implications. Does it mean that liposuction is now illegal, because that adipose tissue is healthy? Does it mean that removing appendixes in those going on big expeditions where appendicitis could mean death (such as to the ISS or Antarctica) is illegal, because the appendix is currently healthy? Does it mean breast reduction or mastectomies for those who need them for back pain, or who have very high cancer risks, is illegal, because the breast itself is healthy (nevermind the back or the potential future cancer). Heck, does it mean the safe margin taken when removing a cancer is illegal, because the margin around the cancer wasn't itself cancer? (although you don't know that until it's reviewed under a microscope)

This is a horrible transphobic law, designed by those who clearly have no knowledge of medicine. They just want to hurt, and clearly don't have the brains or the care to think of the consequences other than securing a few more votes from a few more bigots. But it makes me wonder if the ridiculously ambiguous wording could make it more easy to challenge, because it'll clearly impact a broader range of people than it meant to.

If you’re like me and have a large gap under your front door (someone could take a stick and just poke the leaning stick style door jam out), I recommend the Addalock. It’s small, perfect for traveling, and this lock is CRAZY. It’s so simple but the door does not move.

You can’t see it from the other side, either. It also cost about $20, and I can’t recommend it enough. Easy to travel with, too! Great for Air BnBs!

That’s why I have these on my doors. They get drilled into the side and once its flipped over the door nothing is getting it open. Not the door being unlocked nothing, I’ve unlocked the door and pulled and pushed as hard as I could and it didn’t budge. When I go on a trip this is what I use and when I’m home I leave it on too. No one is getting in here.

Yes. The fire department can and will break down your door if necessary, it’s one of the reasons they have axes; it’s entirely possible for door frames to melt/expand/seize or otherwise become unopenable during a house fire but the door itself can be hacked down. Or the window. In rare cases, the wall. Firefighters don’t fuck around with collateral damage when lives are at stake.

Explanation:

People with a higher amount of disposable income are more likely to get rid of clothes that are still in good condition, while poor people are more likely to wear clothes until they fall apart. Donating old items to thrift stores has exploded in popularity over the past few years. Shopping at thrift stores closer to wealthier areas means you can usually find really good-quality stuff, especially clothing, at a higher rate than shops in poorer areas.

Yard sales in rich areas are almost always either estate sales or hosted by someone who's thinking, "I don't really need the money, I just want to get this stuff out of my house, so I'll take whatever you offer for it." My mom has scored super expensive stuff for like $5 because the seller was more worried about unloading old stuff than making a profit. I've found rare books for fifty cents. It's dope as hell.

Rich people throw out so much shit that's still usable. Furniture, clothing, electronics, even food that's still good and in the packaging. I have scored so much shit that rich people just tossed in the trash. It's great. Shops in rich areas have dumpsters overflowing with high-dollar items. (Disclaimer: dumpster diving can be risky, do it at your own risk, etc., etc.)
