okay but imagine like the first time dick and barbara meet as kids and it's at a public event. Like, a banquet or something that's probably fundraising for kids but for some reason, they're the only actual children there (or if there are others they're all jerks and Babs despises them). Jim brings Barbara to these things to give her a taste of the "high society life" that his job sometimes allows him (also it was too last-minute to get a babysitter). Dick is there because he BEGGED to spend more time with Bruce and Bruce knows that Barbara is usually at these events and figures that they can both use a friend.
Babs is THRILLED to have another kid there, even though he's about a year younger than her. They make their rounds saying hi to people and mingling before Barbara drags Dick into the kitchen to steal snacks. She's gotten to know the waitstaff at these things pretty well so they always have kid-friendly treats for Barbara. The two bond over little pies and chocolates. They get to talking about their pasts, their home lives, and Dick really is able to open up to Babs about his parents, fondly recalling his circus days, while Barbara gets to finally let out all she feels about her mom walking out. The comfort each other and make their new friend laugh like they haven't for a while.
She gets super excited when he hesitantly mentions that he was an acrobat in the circus bc she loves to do gymnastics, so they sneak outside and do some tricks out on the balcony. Dick takes off his adorable lil bowtie and Barbara probably rips her dress's skirt and they start to look a little disheveled, their perfectly-placed hairdos coming undone, but it's okay because they're having fun and honestly don't really care. They laugh it off and eventually when they're tracked down by their dads by the end of the night Dick BEGS Bruce to let him enroll in gymnastics, specifically in Barbara's class. Within the week he's signed up and they're thick as thieves before the end of the first class.
They go to the same school when Dick starts in Gotham, ofc Bruce has him at he best school and encourages Barbara to apply for the Wayne scholarship, because outside of knowing her if he'd seen her application he'd immediately approve it. Neither really has any friends besides each other for a while but also neither really need anyone else.
When they start hero-ing, they become even closer. Doing patrols together, stopping by the Bat Burger drive-thru or something at midnight for burgers and snacks. Just chatting and snacking or doing homework on rooftops together lol (along with, of course, crime-fighting and being awesome vigilantes)
Both at school and during battles they're constanatly complaining about their next gala or event and hating it and the attention. Especially as they get to be older/teenagers, when people start to think they're maybe a young couple (which they're not. they're just friends. (they both have crushes on one another but think they're one-sided/don't wanna ruin the friendship)). They're also complaining about clothes, the formal wear is so annoying, especially with the amount of times these things get crashed; it's not practical to fight in heels or dress shoes, Dick has so many layers restricting his movements and skirts keep getting in Bab's way whether she's fighting or just having a regular night. Bruce buys Babs a lot of formal clothes cuz he can but also bc he doesn't want her to be noticed be a certain type in the higher class and makes sure that everything she wears is comfortable, appropriate for her age, and approved for the event (that third one is the last on purpose).
All the while though Barbara and Dick are still talking about what snacks will be there. They're still hiding out in the kitchen or playing games on the balcony and overall just having a grand old time with just the two of them.
I just think that'd be very very cute, y'know?
