intro to this blog and stuff

welcome hey what’s up my name is NOT Karma but please refer to me as such, my real name is kind of unique and i would rather not give it out to just anyone. if you wanna get to know me like that please lmk and i might think about it (i’m mostly kidding pls hit me up i like yapping).

this blog is 18+ since i talk about nsfw stuff sometimes (graphic violence and sex in media). if you have an issue with that, steer clear. recently i’ve been trying to tag all of my posts under gbgpst (short hand for garbagepost), but i might miss a few. this blog is also like 6ish years old so it’s evolved a lot, but i don’t really want to create a new one, so i’ve revamped this one. i’ve also removed the slytherin banner because fuck h*rry p*tter and fuck jkr.

i’ve been on and off of tumblr for a while, about a year or two before they banned porn, but i made this blog specifically during COVID. it was previously called afterfxckingnoonbitch.

i have a side blog for writing related things. i’m thinking of fixing it up and actually posting there, but i am pretty busy with two part-time jobs as well as my university work, so it may take some time.

i enjoy history a lot. one of my favourite movies of the past year was sinners, and i’d just finished taking an african-american history course (i did a mini podcast episode about the history of hip-hop as a project for that class because i love music), so it was amazing to see the history be reflected onscreen in such a creative way. vampires are also my special interest, so that entire movie felt very specific to me specifically. i often tell people it felt like that movie was made for me personally in a lab somewhere. ryan coogler you are very dear to me.

one of my wips is a sapphic supernatural magical realism story about a muslim girl becoming a vampire and falling in love with a werewolf. i’m working on the world-building aspect right now and may post more about it to my writing side blog.

currently thinking about: heated rivalry, invincible, jjk (mostly satosugu tbh).

I know it’s been said to death but. God I love Shane Hollander and his autism.

I love that he’s allowed to be socially adept and funny and quick witted and sarcastic and empathetic.

I love that his autism is written into moments where he misses subtext, or speaks with a bit of a blank face and monotone.

I love that he’s allowed to be sexual. I love that he’s not just okay with sex, but actively seeks it out, absolutely loves it and is treated like an autonomous sexual being with internality and nuance with sex and intimacy.

I love that he’s not any clear cut, offensive autistic archetype. The closest thing you could assign him to is savant, and even that doesn’t really fit. Shane is so good at hockey because he devotes every day of his life to it, he’s not just magically gifted math hockey powers.

I love that Shane has an overpowering special interest, but it’s not the only thing in his life. I love that he’s fascinated with real estate, that he’s close with his parents and teammates.

I love that he’s allowed to have food or sensory restrictions that don’t manifest as a public breakdown but instead as a preference for ginger ale, soft clothing and a clean house to the casual eye.

I love that he’s shown to have restricted thinking sometimes (being unable to consider coming out, cooking the extra burgers) without him being reduced to a child, unable to communicate or compromise.

I love that his moments of autistic meltdown or overwhelm don’t just look like screaming and crying, but instead as a shutdown at his parents table, or a sharp exit from the Wrong situation, like after the tunamelt.

I love that his autistic moments (like folding the clothes before sex, cooking the extra burgers) are treated by both the directing and other characters as funny and adorable without being infantilised.

I love that Ilya loves Shane so much, not despite his autistic traits, but because of them. I love that Ilya thinks Shane is so adorable and sweet, without it ever compromising how much Ilya also sees Shane as sexy, competent and intelligent.

god could you imagine the collective sense of pure glee and schadenfreude that queer love is blind fans who saw this shit coming the second these two idiots were introduced would experience towards the Straight™️ and homophobic fans that were calling them delusional as the season progressed until the reunion special and reveal came out. #shilya trends for WEEKS on twitter. there are reddit threads cropping up meticulously documenting the timeline of their relationship from when they were cast. the reunion episode and season overall becomes one of the most watched in the history of the show. there are video essays being made on youtube as people discuss the implications on queer culture and the overall reality dating show industry. people are making edits and compilations of the two of them with the many moments they experienced on the show together.

i actually think that what's being missed in the 'why does everyone love heated rivalry' conversation is just that it's good

it's well made, well shot, well directed, the music is interesting, the costumes are both thoughtful and subtly period accurate, the sex scenes are intentional and, again, accurate to what hooking up when you're like 18 actually feels like...the actors are of course attractive but they look like real people. the characters are varied and well fleshed out, the acting is really, really strong

so many shows and films shoot and then slot in whatever music kind of fits or could be licenced in the budget after time, but you can tell that the scenes in hr were shot with that specific music in mind. and the same intentional approach runs through the whole thing

it feels...so nice to watch a show that cares about itself

Nobody knew in advance that this show would become a massive international phenomenon. It was a mid-budget Canadian show (which means low budget by US standards) adapted from a Harlequin romance novel. The deal with HBO for US distribution rights was only signed a few weeks before it began to air.

But everybody involved treated it as if it was serious art anyway. Not just some little Canadian streaming show that might well disappear after airing. Based on a book from a genre that is usually ridiculed by people who consider themselves serious film people. The cast, the crew, the writer/director, the music supervisor, everybody. They all did their best work for love of the game.
