I saw a post talking about how Terry Pratchett only wrote 400 words a day, how that goal helped him write literally dozens of books before he died. So I reduced my own daily word goal. I went down from 1,000 to 200. With that 800-word wall taken down, I’ve been writing more. “I won’t get on tumblr/watch TV/draw/read until I hit my word goal” used to be something I said as self-restraint. And when I inevitably couldn’t cough up four pages in one sitting, I felt like garbage, and the pleasurable hobbies I had planned on felt like I was cheating myself when I just gave up. Now it’s something I say because I just have to finish this scene, just have to round out this conversation, can’t stop now, because I’m enjoying myself, I’m having an amazing time writing. Something that hasn’t been true of my original works since middle school. 

And sometimes I think, “Well, two hundred is technically less than four hundred.” And I have to stop myself, because - I am writing half as much as Terry Pratchett. Terry fucking Pratchett, who not only published regularly up until his death, but published books that were consistently good. 

And this has also been an immense help as a writer with ADHD, because I don’t feel bad when I take a break from writing - two hundred words works up quick, after all. If I take a break at 150, I have a whole day to write 50 more words, and I’ve rarely written less than 200 words and not felt the need to keep writing because I need to tie up a loose end anyways. 

Yes, sometimes, I do not produce a single thing worth keeping in those two hundred words. But it’s much easier to edit two hundred words of bad writing than it is to edit no writing at all.

cersei lannister being unintentionally the funniest (in a depressing way) character in asoiaf will never stop being my favorite thing.

sure shes tragic and terrifying in a way, and its very pitiful to see how delulu she is but its also hilarious how she is deadass living in a constant looney tunes sketch throughout the entire plot of a feast for crows

like the entire plot to kill bronn that somehow ends up with him becoming a landed lord??? peak comedy

like i get shes pissed they wanted to name the kid tywin (i mean he was her dad c’mon) but she tries to have bronn assassinated because he dared to name his bastard son “tyrion.” not only is that objectively hilarious levels of petty (the guy LITERALLY just wanted to name the baby after his buddy??) but she assigns this extremely crucial murder mission to the most incompetent knight in the realm. the medieval equivalent of a used tissue. and she doesn’t even give him instructions??? just vibes!! she’s just like “idk, kill him. figure it out.”

and balman??? decides the best course of action is to challenge bronn (BRONN, the guy who is notoriously without honour and killed a guard by kicking him off a mountain) to SINGLE COMBAT. no sneaky poison. no arranged accident. just sheer dumb confidence on his own abilities.

and when he loses (bc ofc he does) and bronn crushes his legs with a horse and stabs him in the eye for good measure, he immediately spills cersei’s plan like a toddler caught with a cookie lmao

meanwhile Cersei is like “omg did he tell bronn it was me 😟” and falyse, who is watching this entire farce unfold in real time like 🫣.

this whole arc plays like a comedy of errors, falyse is kicked out of her own house (and later becomes dr frankensteins plaything). bronn becomes lord. cersei basically created her own enemy with the power of incompetence, delusions and wine. like how do you try to kill a guy and end up giving him a castle???? girl.

jon did not tell stannis “I have a name” for people to say that he’s going to end up as jon stark or jon targaryen or whatever else. his name is jon SNOW. it doesn’t matter if he is or isn’t *actually* a bastard. he was raised as a bastard, he’s been discriminated against as a bastard, he climbed his way up in the world despite his status as a bastard, his acceptance of society’s “others” stems from his experiences as a bastard. how could he ever not be jon snow? his bastardy has shaped everything about who he is, no matter what the technical circumstances of his birth are. the world believes him to be a bastard, and so that’s his reality. like we obviously recognize that the whole idea of trueborns vs bastards is socially constructed, so (inheritance issues aside) why are we so obsessed with proving that jon isn’t *really* a bastard? will being trueborn fundamentally change who he is? will it cancel out a lifetime of being treated like a second-class citizen? will it make him more/less of a stark or a targaryen?

like there’s a reason that asoiaf has an ongoing theme of “knowing your name”, particularly in adwd (the same book that we get the “I offered you a name” // “I have a name” exchange). jon knows his name, he’s actively claiming it, he’s giving it power. he is a SNOW. come on even mormont’s raven knows that.

possibly the greatest asoiaf moment ever is when jon gets the letter about bran waking up and mormont expects him to grieve because “sorry kid :( it’s actually bad news :( he’s never going to walk again :(” but jon is all like “my brother is going to live !!!” and then he races out of the room and tells everyone he passes that “my brother is going to live !!!” and he gets back to the common hall and picks tyrion up and spins him around and makes him read the letter too because “my brother is going to live !!!” and he’s so giddy that he befriends grenn and tells thorne to go fuck himself and then everybody laughs and jon is just so happy because “my brother is going to live !!!”

meanwhile bran is back in winterfell listening to robb’s bannermen whisper about how death is a kinder fate than his, how they should’ve just let him die, how he’s too broken to be alive—with no idea that his big brother is out there celebrating because bran is going to LIVE !!!
