The idea that the inconsistencies of Daniel's allergies and need for glasses is a product of extended gate travel (as opposed to the more realistic scenario where the writers just forgot) is really silly and fun, but tbh I feel like there's a bit of a horror or identity issues aspect that could be explored. There's this giant alien artifact that can take you from one planet to the other in seconds. People have a general idea of how it works, but that's really it. Oh, and it'll slowly start changing you physically, and you won't even notice until some random night when you think "Wait, didn't I have a mole there?" Remember that scar on your arm you got when you were a little kid, playing on the swings with your best friend? Well, it's gone now. That birthmark that was the cause of the embarrassing nickname your mom has called you your whole life? Well, uh, it's not there anymore. You don't know exactly when it was erased, just that you'll never get it back. And yeah, sure, the gate isn't causing any physical or mental issues, just smoothing out the things it views as imperfections, but those imperfections were still you. So you can't help it when you start to wonder how much of you is still left
There was also that one horrifying episode where Teal'c got stuck in the Gate's data buffer as just... Dematerialized data it didn't put together yet and like, how do you come back from that? How does Daniel rectify the fact that Teal'c was almost just *deleted accidentally* with the fact that he could just as easily one day ascend and exist as pure intellect and thought?
i love the early seasons of stargate sg1 when michael shanks is clearly bridging the gap from the movie and playing daniel jackson but more specifically playing james-spader-as-daniel-jackson
and it fades out over the first season or so but then sometimes a random spader moment pops up and it's very surprising and funny
shanks does a great job, it's just that spader's mannerisms and speech patterns are sooo identifiable that it's really clear when they're being performed by someone other than james spader
Suddenly remembered once watching a streamer who was for some reason talking about penises and vaginas but couldn't bring herself to say those words (possibly due to censorship reasons) but found like the funniest and most misguided way to try and be "woke" about it, where she basically subbed "masc" for "person with penis" and "fem" for "person with vagina." Like I think this person had gotten the memo that "you shouldn't assume that everyone with a penis is a man or that just because someone has a vagina they're a woman" and then had stumbled upon the worst possible way to square that circle.
Like okay, if for some reason you do find yourself in a situation where you need to talk about people as separate groups (or individual hypothetical people) based on what kind of genitalia they've got attached, if you want to do it without making any normative statements about the gendered nature of those thangs. The best tactic is to simply use "people with penises" and "people with vaginas."
Have we written off the possibility of staffed/distaffed?
So remember how I said I was designing a TtRPG of my own? Here's how I'm planning characters out for now
Stats
Your classes are:
Vigour: which directly controls how big your healthbar is
Vitality: which controls everything else, like your stamina bar, resistances and the like
Strength: brute melee damage, and also your ability to boost said damage. Most meleé weapons are Strength focussed
Skill: more subtle melee damage, but also casting speed and ranged weaponry
Mind: "physical" magic, alongside a host of damaging spells, but with a very limited support pool
Faith: God dependent spells, but with a lot more support options with only a couple of straight damaging stuff
All players start at level 6 - which is 1 per stat. I haven't figured out the ideal function for it yet. You gain a level once you gain enough Experience Points, and can assign it wherever
Classes
You can broadly place any character, PC or otherwise into a class purely for the sake of convenience. There are NPC only classes like Merchant, Wandering Merchant, Apothecary and the like, but they aren't as important as your Player Classes.
Basic Classes are the backbone of the class system, which give you the basis on which to build further.
Fighter: meleé as a standard. The only class able to use every class of Shield and light to medium meleé weapon
Mage: standard mage. You can use all kinds of magic not locked behind a specific God, and come inherently with a more powerful heal skill not tied to a specific spell
: ranged physical weapons. Only the lightest of weapons, but with an inherent evasion skill.
You can then hybridise your classes once you have twenty points to allocate per stat, or double down on the same class, OR you can advance your class.
Warrior is a more brute strength focussed advancement to the Fighter. You get to wield Crows' Beaks and warhammers and great swords. You are basically immune to being staggered. You can scare enemies into following you
Sorcerer is a more raw offence focussed advancement to the Mage. You get to summon a meteor strike. You get to summon a light so potent it kills by sheer radiation poisoning. You can fly!
Ranger is the all-round jack of all trades Advanced class, which can use some spells, most weapons, and a few skills.
The Dancer is a dex focussed Warrior who gains a Consecutive Attack skill with an evasion bonus at the cost of armour protection.
The Hybrid classes I haven't fully thought through the mechanics of yet. Feel free to ask me questions! I'd love to answer!
I will refrain from giving any input because I want to keep this project pure. However, good job. You are, indeed, making a TTRPG.
I will ask, have you played Dark Souls/any other souls-like game? Not a criticism, just an observation.
Fantasy Heartbreaker rename Strength challenge: level Unattainable
Is there any chance that Hasbro will see their financial success from Universes Beyond, cross that with the capacity of any IP being able to crowdfund a bunch of money for a 5e conversion, and then just make their own 5e "Universes Beyond" slop?
Like, it actually couldn't be worse than what we're already getting.
I think you just re-invented 2000s OGL slop but gave Hasbro a fun title to put on it.
I, for one, am stoked for Universes Beyond - Testament. 5e in Bible times sounds so bad it might kill people
anti-nuclear idiots won't tell you this but only 1 guy has ever died from radiation in the entire US nuclear power industry from its inception to the modern day.
Isn't the bigger concern what happens when things go wrong and the plant has a meltdown?
A problem that we've also successfully solved in multiple ways. Best of all being Thorium reactors which literally shut themselves down before they get out of hand.
There's only been one meltdown in the US where no one died and there was no long lasting environmental impact.
The soviets fucked up massively one time and suddenly the rest of us have to be afraid of nothing
Modern designs can't melt down. Even older designs required several people to do several very wrong things over a period of time while ignoring warnings and disabling safety systems. Half the folks that hate nuclear are basing it on something approximately this dumb:
"okay but what if something goes REALLY WRONG though?"
I need everyone to understand that the worst nuclear disasters in human history, combined, have done less harm to the world and to humans than Coal Power does every single year.
You think Chernobyl and Fukushima were really that bad? You're looking at maybe about 4,000 and 2,000 people who died in those incidents, with the overwhelming majority of them being attributed to long-term cancer years and years after. Otherwise, Nuclear power's annual death toll during normal usage amounts to statistically ZERO.
Coal power is estimated to have caused 460,000 deaths between 1999 and 2020 alone. And that's not even counting the environmental damage, the latent radiation exposure because coal plants and coal particulate is more radioactive than the worst, least reliable nuclear power plant ever made, the infrastructure strain, the political ramifications of countries shutting down nuclear power to become more reliant on low quality local coal and imported oil, the strain it puts on the medical industry to have so many more people who will need extensive treatment, and the cost of labor and resources that has to go into trying to keep every coal plant from being even worse than they already are.
Or we could build more nuclear power plants, and suddenly find ourselves with an abundance of excess cheap, safe energy that would alleviate all of the problems our global power grid is facing right now because we keep trying to use wind and solar to offset the damage coal is already doing, and that just leads to us using more coal.
Your character has a dark, terrible secret.
So secret the other players don't know it. The GM doesn't know it. You don't know it.
But it's there.
Honestly this is my ideal character backstory. There is a mystery there - the player has no idea what the answer is and neither do I. Let's fucking figure it out together bitches
Firefly animated series revival in development
Well, ain't this shiny?
After a lot of teasing on social media, Nathan Fillion, Alan Tudyk, Gina Torres, Morena Baccarin, Sean Maher, Summer Glau, Jewel Staite, and Adam Baldwin all confirmed that they're getting the crew of the Serenity back together... in an animated series that picks up where Firefly and Serenity left off.
Variety reports that while original showrunner Joss Whedon gave his blessing for the continuation, he won't be involved in making it. The show also doesn't currently have a streaming home, but Fillion is hoping that changes now that word is out.
Like, the opposite of shiny unless they've gotten someone new to write the follow up material.
Serenity and, much more pressing the comics were so just... Not good and not Firefly that I really can't get behind a revival until I know the OG cast is coming back but also they're ignoring the post show stuff and someone new is doing the writing

Alright, I love Stargate with all my heart, but I need to get something off my chest.
Goa'uld should not have continued to be named after Earth gods.
Like, I love it. I really do. The mythology-obsessed part of my brain goes brrrrr every time a new Goa'uld shows up and oh shit this one is based in Irish mythology?! Yes please!
I LOVE that, but also I hate it. Like... Ra was in charge of Earth. We had pyramids because Ra was here and, like, I can even head canon that all of Egyptian mythology was based on Ra spilling the tea on his fellow Goa'uld and that turning into myth and legend.
But like... why is there a System Lord named Ba'al? Was he just... also here? Was Ra sharing Earth with Baal and Cronus and Morrigan and Amaterasu and Kali and Yu-Huang and...
It's like, the one instance in the show that would make more sense if it was less thematic. I feel like Daniel should have, at some point, thrown up his hands and given up at why the fuck Goa'uld names line up so perfectly with earth mythology of every god-damned culture.
I love when you can tell when a thing in a piece of media was created before someone started to really think that world building might be important.
My current favorite example? Goa'uld ships in Stargate SG-1.
The Goa'uld are an ancient, galactic power largely themed after ancient Egypt because Stargate is awesome and basically entirely based on conspiracy theories about the pyramids.
Their ships? Well, they have a number of them. Their motherships are called Ha'tak. They have bombers called Al'kesh. Scout ships called Tel'taks. It's a very solid air force.
But every air force needs a basic fighter. For the Goa'uld, their go-to, basic, run of the mill fighter is called...
The Death Glider.
That is, in fact, the canonical in-universe, official name of the ship. You have Ha'taks, Al'kesh, Tel'taks, and Death Gliders.
Guess which one was named before someone thought world building was important?
When you pick up a sword for the first time you will be slow and awkward. This is frustrating, but refuse the temptation to try and become a “faster” fencer. Chasing after speed is like trying to catch smoke. If you try and pursue speed, all you will accomplish is haste. Haste is the enemy of 1st class fencing.
Speed is a lie the untrained mind tells itself when it sees an action it cannot follow. The truth is a combination of timing, control, and fluidity. Fluid motion, even done slowly, will always arrive before a hasty strike. Control will allow you to move without wasteful motion that will slow you down. Timing will eliminate the need to move fast almost entirely. There is no need to get somewhere fast so long as you get there at the right time.
Tip for mymutuals who engage in bladed armed combat
signal boost
This is true for plenty of other things too!! When you’re learning anything that involves moving your body, don’t forget that quality of movement is more important than speed!
Slow is smooth, smooth is fast
THEYRE LYING JUMP AT YOUR OPPONENT JUMPSCARE JUMPSCARE BACK FOOT FORWARD AND LEAP AT THEM!!
send them to HELL!!!
be gentle and patient with
a) who you were
b) who you are now
c) who you are becoming
