The Burger still gets made, even if you go Vegan. If you don’t buy it, it just winds up in the trash. If you want to do something meaningful about waste, you need legislation: It must become a crime to waste food in those ways.
If you care about Animal Cruelty in Factory Farms, you need to get legislation passed. It must become a crime to mistreat animals in those ways, and when malfeasances occurs, the onus of responsibility for those crimes must fall upon wealthy shoulders. That, also, requires legislation. It requires regulations, and regulators.
The largest source of Microplastics is wear and tear on automobile tires. It doesn’t matter what brand of shampoo you buy. It doesn’t matter which company you support with your dollar. The issue of Public Transit is too large-scale to be handled at anything less than the municipal level.
It’s not enough to just not participate in society
If you want the world to Change, you must leverage the mechanisms of political power.
“The first of May demanded the introduction of the eight-hour day. But even after this goal was reached, May Day was not given up. As long as the struggle of the workers against the bourgeoisie and the ruling class continues, as long as all demands are not met, May Day will be the yearly expression of these demands. And, when better days dawn, when the working class of the world has won its deliverance, then too humanity will probably celebrate May Day in honor of the bitter struggles and the many sufferings of the past.”
— Rosa Luxemburg, What Are the Origins of May Day?, 1894
Current twitter drama is Europeans confidently declaring that they don't need to drive or use overpriced public transport to get to the MetLife stadium for the World Cup; they will simply walk down the highway to get there. Girl it's New Jersey. They're gonna splatter you for fun.
If you manage to get on the turnpike before the cops stop you, a soccer mom is gonna do the Jersey slide in a RAV4 and turn your entire group into a wet speedbump
Image me gently taking your hand as I tell you the following:
This is ABSOLUTELY a perfectly fine footpath.
In fact, with how much space I’m seeing here, it is entirely plausible, that the European hordes will just create a temporary little Wanderweg right next to the highway. With that much space they might not even have to interfere with traffic.
But also have you seen the space between your highways? I‘d say the gaps each easily fit another whole stream of European walking hordes. Or maybe even two going opposite directions :D
tightly grips your hand with both of my sweaty hands.
the grass is not a permanent feature. there just happens to be a chunk of it there. the side of the road can vary from grass to swampwater ditches to steep embankments to absolutely nothing within a very short distance.
they will call in every highway enforcer in the state and mass incarcerate the lot of you before they allow you to Darwin Award yourselves across 6 lanes of traffic into an international incident or, (their real concern) impede the progress of the single most important north-south interstate corridor in america, ball kicky game be damned.
(I'm starting to believe that a fair number of you in the notes have We're Better Than Stupid Americans embedded so deeply into your cultural identity that you will Just Not Listen to anything we say to you about the material circumstances about the place we live in, rather than taking us at our word that there is a reason that most Americans travel the way we do and it's a good reason.)
You are a US American motorist driving along i-95 during rush hour. You see a pedestrian dart in front of you. You have 2 seconds to make a decision:
Attempt to stop (cause multi-car pile up and kill pedestrian anyway)
Attempt to swerve #1 (cause semi truck next to you to jackknife, cause pileup, kill pedestrian anyway)
Attempt to swerve #2 (into ditch/swamp/retaining wall, 85 mph/137 km per hour, killing yourself, your passengers, and a bunch of other people on the road when your car inevitably sends pieces shooting off into traffic. Also, the pedestrian gets run over by the person behind you, who was NOT expecting a pedestrian and didn't even see them)
Run over the pedestrian and hope you can at least stay in your lane and not cause a worse accident while you slow down
Also...the US is usually hotter than Europe...how many miles are y'all planning on walking? Bcs the heat, lack of shade as well as places you can easily stop to rest or buy a drink is gonna be a huge issue. And it's in June!! When the weather can quite easily hit 90F/32C or higher, which will be worsened by walking on hot asphalt surrounded by cars putting out even more heat in direct, unrelenting sunlight while your body also heats up from the exercise as you walk for what surely will be several hours. And that's IF the temp stays at low. We're expecting a massive heat wave this summer with record shattering highs. Wouldn't be surprised if it hits 100F/40C just from the asphalt and cars, and then clears 110F/43C due to the weather.
If you try this you will die, if not from traffic then from the heat. Just pay for the fucking uber. Or, even better, don't fucking come here oh my god?? You're not safe bcs you're white and European ICE has been kidnapping white travelers too. Football can not be more important than your life. Stay home and safe and watch it on TV.
please please please please reblog if you’re a writer and have at some point felt like your writing is getting worse. I need to know if I’m the only one who’s struggling with these thoughts
this is a common phenomenon. the better you get, the more you recognize flaws. the good thing is you can strive to get better. but the bad thing is that you see nothing but flaws. you are actually getting better, but your editing/critical brain is getting tuned up and can see more things to improve. someone post the graph, I can't find it
Iran isn't an anomaly. the US has a long history of bombing hospitals. they did it in Laos, Cambodia, Yemen and Iraq, and bombed a hospital in Afghanistan that Médecins Sans Frontières (Doctors Without Borders) had already given them precise co-ordinates for.
An internal inquiry revealed that the airmen aboard the AC-130 gunship that carried out the operation pushed back against their superiors, questioning the strike’s legality. However, they were overruled and ordered to bomb the hospital regardless of their concerns.

they've bombed hospitals in other countries too. destroying infrastructure necessary for life, through bombs and sanctions, is standard US practice against any population it wants to subjugate. like all imperialist powers, nothing is off limits when trying to expand its ability to exploit and pillage
why do americans think everyone on the internet lives in the same place as them. just saw someone say honeybees are "not native". not native to where????? the entire planet?????
saw a photo of garlic mustard somewhere on the internet once and americans in the comments were like "fun fact this plant is invasive so you should definitely tear out any you see, WITH THE ROOTS so it won't spread!" whole fucking time i'm living in garlic mustard native range. i don't think i will be doing that.
This drives me absolutely up the wall in r/birdfeeding. Every time there's a picture of a house sparrow, the entire comments are filled with americans talking about them being invasive and how they should be basically killed on sight. But often OP has not provided a location, and house sparrows have a HUGE native range. Here in the UK they're not only native birds, they're on the decline, they need our help and protection.
Me every time I see a post saying that you should destroy your lawn and cram a bunch of native plants as closely together as you can instead. Look, I'm not saying lawns are native to Australia because they're not, but our native plants evolved to burn; they are dry, their leaves are dry, and they're full of oils. If you plant native plants the way Americans tell you to that's a fucking fire hazard and you are endangering yourself and your neighbours next time we have a Black Summer.
tapping onto this, Ry's guide is for a specific part of NSW. Australia is a very very big place and there is a lot of biodiversity. So don't take one guide as The One True Guide because I used to be a ranger and lemme tell you, trying to stuff native plants in terrains they are unsuited for just creates a mess for everyone. Honestly, just google "native planting <your council> " and they will have a guide that is specific to your area.
Being an adult in this recession and being like wow I am totally "splurging" on 3 new sets of cotton underwear and 3 pairs of socks like whoaaaaa hold your horses duke of the land where's all this money gonna come from
the government is running a survey from march 6th 2026 to april 20th 2026 on the impact of modern vehicle headlights. specifically they want to know if you are affected by things such as the glare, angle, intensity, and colour of the modern LED headlights. you do not have to be a driver to take this survey. please consider filling out this quick (~15 minutes or less) survey.
Transport Canada wants to learn how headlight glare affects road users and what vehicle or lighting features may influence how people experi
If you want to send your feedback directly, or you are looking for more information, you can send your comments to [email protected], make sure to include “Headlight glare” in the email subject line."
If someone needs more drive to participate in this survey (if the difficulties experienced by drivers and pedestrians alike are not enough), I find this article from DarkSky encompasses the ecological issues with what became of headlights nowadays.
If you have found yourself squinting more often at the bright, blue glare of oncoming traffic in recent years, you are not imagining it. And
If you have found yourself squinting more often at the bright, blue glare of oncoming traffic in recent years, you are not imagining it. And you are not alone.
Car headlights have been getting brighter, a shift many drivers experience firsthand and one that has become a growing public concern.
[...]
So far, the conversation has largely focused on driver discomfort and road safety. But there is another side to this story—one that reaches beyond the road—that has received far less attention.
DarkSky’s mission is to restore the nighttime environment and protect communities from the harmful effects of artificial light at night, and vehicle headlights cannot be ignored. As traffic volumes rise and lighting technology evolves, addressing this growing environmental threat through thoughtful lighting and design solutions is essential to protecting the night for both people and the planet.
But what kind of feedback can I send in the email to help with this situation?
Never fear! DarkSky got you covered.
To guide future initiatives and solutions on this issue, DarkSky’s board has developed five recommendations grounded in the Five Principles for Responsible Outdoor Lighting, specifically aimed at vehicle headlights.
1. Capping brightness: We are calling for a data-driven review of US and European standards to set a firm “ceiling” on how bright headlights need to be. More light isn’t always safer—often, it’s just more glare.
2. Smart lighting for safer roads: We’re advocating for “adaptive” headlights that put light exactly where drivers need it and nowhere else, protecting the roadside habitats that currently get blasted by light spill.
3. Warmer tones for better vision: We must stop headlights from getting bluer. We are proposing a limit on blue light emissions to find a better balance. This “sweet spot” improves safety by reducing the hazy glare that plagues older drivers, while simultaneously protecting nocturnal insects and wildlife that are harmed by blue-rich light.
4. Planning for darkness: Road design must account for the impact of vehicle headlights on the surrounding environment. We are proposing that transportation and planning authorities incorporate light pollution mitigation into road design standards for both new projects and retrofits to shield nearby habitats from vehicle light spill.
5. Following the science: We are championing the need for independent research specifically focused on the ecological footprint of modern vehicle lighting systems. To lead effectively, we must fully understand how the shift to high-intensity LEDs on our cars is affecting the nocturnal world.
And if you want to see what a car designed with people, wildlife and nighttime environment in mind looks like, here is DarkSky One:
