Figuring I'll go through my comic making process for everyone. So I always start with the story board. And this includes storyboarding the paneling, characters and dialogue so that I know what I need to do for the full thing kinda.
I then use the line tool to make the panels properly, and lineart the characters as well, in closer shots of the characters (like here) I'll use a thicker pen for the arms, seeing as they're twigs. I also would color Stream's facial details at this point too.
Then I'll add color - lowering the opacity of certain layers is just key to this entire process. As it lets me know how to work things out. Of course this is just the flat color, and without any dialogue, shading or background it's kinda boring.
So that's why I add the dialogue here then! Starting with the text itself, I then add the bubbles, I make sure the bubbles are large enough that the words are legible. I also write solely in caps so each word has a punch to it. I also use a thicker brush when drawing the dialogue bubbles.
SOOO I got carried away and ended up doing the BG and shading. But I'll talk about the BG here. So, I typically just make a pattern with colors, and decide where the light is. Then I lower the opacity and add a solid color layer under it to make the background stand out a little less.
Then I shade the image, just kinda, following my gut mostly. Using my gut instinct ain't the greatest but it passes itself. THEN, I shrink the image down to 800x1280 (cropping height if needed) …And then, well, you have the final product! A comic panel by yours truly!
