Okay, but check out this video from mid-May 2022 of a Kestrel Dad who just kept piling up voles and mice beside his babies when the mom was injured/killed/mia’d by owls…but then watched one of his babies just swallow a lizard and went “OH. I can feed them small food!” and learned to tear it apart!

EDIT: There’s a not-zero percent chance that this could be the same dad???????? The source is the same–Robert E Fuller–but they could be different birds.

UPDATE: Not only has Mister Kes learned to feed his chicks all on his own…

….the three chicks who were taken out of the nest for intensive care after the mom disappeared were put back in, and he just started feeding them, too.

He’s a single father of six who does not possess the instincts to feed even one of his offspring, but he learned and adopted that behavior without difficulty and is now hunting and providing for six kids all on his own.

The thought of a child accidentally seeing something of a gruesome nature through a phone screen alone is upsetting. The thought of a child witnessing something of that sort, even for a singular moment, is horrifying.

The knowledge that Gazan children have been endlessly living through unspeakable trauma for over 400 days now, waking up to it, falling asleep to it, experiencing it through themselves and through their loved ones is bleak beyond words. Nothing else seems to matter anymore beyond that.

Today I'm thinking of my friend Nader @abdelsalam1990 who is only 17. On the precipice of adulthood. One of many of an entire generation of Gazans who are growing up through this genocide. When he should be discovering more of the world and himself, pursuing his passions, studying new things, making memories, he is instead restlessly appealing to strangers on the internet for his family's sake because their lives depend on it.

For context:

When the Wiggles first started touring the US, there was one question they were asked again and again. “People were coming up and saying, ‘Oh, so you’re friends of Dorothy?’” veteran Wiggle Anthony Field says. “I didn’t even know the other meaning – I went, ‘Yeah, we are!’” Field (the OG blue Wiggle) thought Americans were referring to Dorothy, the affable green and yellow dinosaur and longtime fixture of the Wiggles’ songs and live shows. They were, of course, really making a sly reference to the queer code slang term for a gay man. But when Field eventually figured this out, it gave him an idea for a song. On Friday, when Australia’s best-known children’s entertainers release their 63rd album (yes, really), audiences will finally get to hear Friends of Dorothy. It’s a collaboration with Orville Peck, the modern country songwriter known for his face masks, cowboy hats – and being an out-and-proud gay man. The Wiggles nervously took the idea for Friends of Dorothy to Peck on Zoom. To their delight, Peck, who has a young nephew who loves the band, jumped at the chance. “Orville was so happy to do it,” Field says. “And he’s a friend of Dorothy’s as well!” (x)
