It's not just that they're doing corruption, but they're doing the kind of corruption that is basically "guy hands over a cartoon money sack with dollar signs on it" corruption.
When I got my current job they made me sign a form acknowledging that I'll be immediately fired if I accept free mcdonalds or an amazon gift card from someone at a rival firm
Okay, this made me pause and literally write out every letter that 'fell' in order (‘oomngouuhhrsrtutpntnue’), then make sure they were all contained in 'turntomushuponthergroun'.
They are, and it's very satisfying.
Not to be rhe ten millionth person to say “USAmerican President Donald Trump Is An Incoherent Public Speaker Whose Train Of Thought Can Be Best Described As Scat Jazz” but I just remembered that when he talks at international events it is several dozen people’s job to translate what he’s saying and what he intends to say to world leaders in real time
And I desperately wish to hear how they do it
If anyone reading this isn’t fluent enough in English to understand the sentences that man says, please know that he has essentially mixed a number of adjectives and topics together in a hat and is pulling them out at random like a horrible children’s game
Like that waxy jaundiced bitch will straight up be like “J'étais sur internet l'autre jour – internet, la plus grande invention américaine. Et la Chine a “internet aussi. Pas un bon internet, pas comme le mien, j'ai un internet formidable. Les gens me disent : « Donald, ton internet est génial ! » On adore l'internet de Donald. Mais la Chine… Chine, Chine, Chine… And people will lose their minds
International translators have had this problem for A While - if they *don't* clean up what he says to sound coherent, they look like they're doing a bad job.
Explore Trump translation challenges, tips for interpreters, and 2025 strategies for accurate political translation and Trumpslation success
oh my god
There was a scandal in Poland because one translator decided to translate him accurately, tone, vocabulary level and word salad tangents and all. Polish conservatives who don't speak English and previously only heard smoothed out translations that sounded coherent and used big words were up in arms about how the translator was "inserting her political agenda", "mocking him", "exaggerating", "purposefully trying to make him look bad" and "incredibly unprofessional". I listened to the translation in question. It was literally just accurate.
5. Sensitive and Controversial Language Trump’s speeches occasionally contain misogynistic, sexist, or inflammatory language. Japanese interpreter Tsuruta, for example, faced challenges when translating sexualized remarks, ultimately opting for standard terminology to maintain professionalism. Similarly, Chinese translator Kumiko Torikai found certain lewd expressions ethically challenging, ultimately leading to her retirement. Navigating these situations requires skillful balancing of accuracy, professionalism, and cultural sensitivity, ensuring that the translation is appropriate without distorting the original intent.
I don't know why the authors of PoliLingua act as if Trump's verbal misogyny and racism wasn't very much part of his "original intent".
it only now dawns on me that millions of people on this planet think Trump is way smarter than he is because translators have neglected to relate his violent speech accurately out of misunderstood politeness. Make the ape sound like a ape
We had a mini-scandal in the German translation/interpretation community last year about exactly this – the interpreter for the inauguration got sick of Trump's incoherence and made a remark into his mic that was not intended to be heard (here's my post on it).
Martha and Jonathan find a baby in an ark. There is no note with him, but they see how tenderly he was swaddled, how desperately sent here, and they look at each other and they know. She was on the Kindertransport. He lost his parents to the camps. Martha's eyes say "He is like us." Her voice says, "Moses in the bullrushes."
They take him home. They give him the Hebrew name Kal-El and the American name Clark so he will fit in. They know what it is to be different. There is no Hebrew school in Smallville so they teach him at home, and study Torah together. When he shows special abilities, they wonder to each other if he is the Moshiach. Not for the strength of his body, but for the strength of his kindness. He always seems to be helping others, delivering them from harm, as he was delivered to them. They never tell him this, but they teach him about the obligations without measure. He's a natural.
At school, he is side-eyed for being different. When he displays eccentricities, the villagers shrug and say "maybe it's a Jewish thing." The Kents make sure he values his education, and is always home for Shabbas dinner.
His is bar-mitzva'd at the nearest shul, a few towns over. They didn't know his birthday, so they chose one near Parshat Shemot. Now they worry that was too on-the-nose, but he gives a moving d'var about the obligation to speak truth to power.
As he comes into his own and tries to be a hero, he hides his identity from the public, not out of shame, but to keep his adopted parents safe. They've been persecuted enough.
When he moves to the big city for a job at a newspaper, Pa is so proud he cries. Clark uses his journalistic skills to expose corruption, give voice to the neglected and oppressed, and research his own origins. When he learns the truth about Krypton and his birth parents' desperate bid to send him to safety, Ma and Pa are not at all surprised that they were right.
When Clark brings Lois home, he assures his parents she is a nice Jewish girl, but they're just glad she's a mensch. They step on a glass to remember the destruction of Krypton, and stand under a chuppah quilted by Ma.
A white billionaire spews lies about him, trying to spread fear of the stranger in their midst. He comes out in public and says "There's nothing more American than being an immigrant."
When the government turns against immigrants, he stands on the side of the protestors and protects. Tear gass does nothing to him. He makes himself a shield. He writes article after article in the Daily Planet, making sure the public knows what their government is doing, that immigrants know their rights, that the powerful are put on notice. When they start rounding people up, he says "Never again."
He shows up at immigrant detention centers, armed with miracles. And says "Let my people go."
#i'm not crying you are#this hit me right in the feels#weren't many of the og superman creators jewish?
They were! Superman was created in 1938 by Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster, two Jewish boys, sons of immigrants.

After all the talk about Microwave For One on another post of mine, I figured it was a good time to bring out this gem. The original was published in 1978, and this "revised edition" is from 1988. @tamber-tales and I found it in a free pile a couple years back. It still smells very strongly of weed, which isn't exactly uncommon for free pile items in this area, but feels especially fitting for this cookbook.
Let's see what horrors await...
The introductory section talks about the science of microwaves, which is pretty cool!
...oh
Gonna be honest I felt like a fool having to search "is aluminum foil microwave safe" after reading this but it turns out the answer is "technically yes but if you mess it up and don't follow these precise safety guidelines there will be explosions." This cookbook mentions none of these guidelines.
"The only reason not to use metal pans in the microwave is the fact that it slows down cooking. Totally safe though."
Goodness this gives me so much anxiety as someone raised with the mentality of "if anything metal goes in the microwave both the appliance and you will probably die instantly."
One time when I was sick as a kid, I put a whole metal pot of soup in the microwave to heat it up. And nothing really happened except the plastic handle melted a bit. Well, and it kinda fucked up the microwave. Never heated the same afterwards. But it didn’t explode!
Adding this to the list of "things I learned to fear as a child that actually aren't that bad" I guess
Anyways, here, have an ominously expanding marshmallow.
The example image for defrosting is, inexplicably, a luminous block of ice full of olives, garlic(?), and either shrimp or peach slices. And honestly, I don't want to know which it is.
Also, please enjoy the most ominous cup of spiced cider I've ever seen. Why did you take this picture from that angle. Why does the cinnamon stick look like a knife. I have questions but I'm afraid this looming hot beverage is about to stab me.
Poultry time. I don't know why, but this image is deeply unsettling to me. Three horrible naked creatures standing at attention, watching you.
If microwaving an entire raw chicken isn't enough, how about a turkey?
Microwaving is an excellent way of preparing fish and seafood. Featuring a fish steak picture that someone cut out of the book for reasons unknown.
Oh boy, hot munchies!
Some final highlights, plus a bonus reading companion
Jerma: no chat.. *laughs* I’m not gonna, I’m NOT gonna disavow StarClan and break the warriors code! I would never do that, who does that?

in the middle of crying for no reason i was interrupted by the sounds of one of my neighbors blasting "shadow the hedgehog pissed on my fucking wife" so loud it echoed around the courtyard outside
a thing about me is i basically never notice a wig or other kind of hairpiece in tv/movies. it has to be party city territory for me to even twig it. people will complain about characters' wigs looking bad and i will nod along but there is like a 90% chance i did not notice for a second while watching. i consider this mostly a blessing.
need a polite way to say "im not engaging in a discussion on this topic with you because the conclusions you have reached are based on so many interwoven layers of misconceptions it would be easier to just like, hard reset your whole brain, just start over as a baby and try again"
