Hermione had been so busy admiring the view that she hadn't noticed there was already someone standing by the elevators, leaning against the opposite wall.

It's easy enough to recognise him. It's the teaching assistant from the lab, the one she caught looking at her.

She squeezes around her textbook. He's tall and quite obviously good looking, well-dressed with dark hair and sharp features. Being a demonstrator, she's sure he's either a postgraduate student or a young researcher, so he must be smart too.

With beauty and brains, her mother would call him the full package.

People like that didn't usually talk to her.

"Hi," she chirps back, but as soon as it leaves her lips, she's struck with a wave of doubt, so she adds, "um... sorry. Were you talking to me?"

He smiles and laughs softly through his nose. "Who else would I be talking to?"

Hermione glances behind her. The rest of the corridor by the elevator is empty aside from them.

He walked back to the manor, a solitary figure with a baby bundled in his arms.

No light seemed to shine on the father and son or the graveyard they left behind.

there is a very specific fandom experience where somebody comments regularly on your fics and then you also become friends on tumblr and discord

and suddenly there are two parallel versions of your relationship existing simultaneously:

on ao3 they have just commented on the most emotionally devastating chapter you have written all year

on discord you are sharing cat photos

and i’m never quite sure whether fandom etiquette requires us to acknowledge the existence of the fic outside of ao3,

or whether we both politely act like it never happened whilst carrying this strange awareness between us?
