If you ever hear the phrase "fascism is aesthetics as politics," that's what this post is talking about.

It's not about being tough on crime, because the absolute toughest most brutal measure you could take against "crime" as a social problem is to alleviate poverty, and increase access to education, healthcare and social mobility.

It's about performing "tough on crime" as an aesthetic by enacting violence against a prop, i.e. minorities and the impoverished, who are fetishized and objectified to represent "crime." They are brutalized as punishment for crime, but never with the purpose of alleviating the problem of crime.

This is why a lot of conservatives and other right wingers can get straight up angry when you suggest things like reform or social measures to reduce crime. They don't want crime to be reduced, they want an eternal war against "crime" because it provides an arena for the righteous to demonstrate virtue by brutalizing their enemies.

someone mentioned neil gaiman in one of the replies to this and i think this is a good opportunity to remind people that there are certain kinds of predatory men (like neil gaiman) who insinuate themselves into progressive spaces by learning the “appropriate” language and social codes primarily in order to put themselves in proximity to women and other vulnerable people who view them as “safe.” i think misogyny/sexism/rape apologia in leftist spaces is much larger of an issue than just this (as there are men in those spaces who are not actively malicious but who have unexamined patriarchal outlooks that bleed into their beliefs and behavior) but i do think it’s important to point this out and to remind people to be on their guard.

i think the monkeys would end up in the same position as us. it’s impossible for a single monkey to pick that many bananas so the monkey would have had to create and enforce some kind of monkey social system (monkey global capitalism if you will) where other monkeys are in some way coerced or convinced to pick bananas for this one monkey even to their detriment. such a monkey society would be incredibly difficult to dismantle and anyone who tried would have much monkey opposition from monkeys with more social power and monkey violence on their side.

which is the exact situation we find ourselves in because we are monkeys and one of the monkeys has a trillion bananas and no one has beat him to death yet.
