EVERYONE SHUT UP AND LOOK
One Piece Episode 1136
Rest in Paradise Malcolm Jamal Warner !!🙏🏾 lost one of our greats today !
the way elijah is actually tearing up when he’s trying to get sammie to “leave all this improper shit to us,” is so… i think it speaks to how elijah thinks of himself and where he is in life. he wanted more, he and his brother wanted more, but the blood of their father kept them from being able to go down to mound bayou and make a living with the “proper Black folks.” and i think at a certain point it became a self-fulfilling prophecy. the whole world saw elijah and elias as no good, so it’s what they became. i think elijah really wanted more for his and his brother’s lives. i think, if he could have, he would have left all that “improper shit” behind and lived a good life. but he was dealt bad cards and he became a bad player to keep his head above water.
and i think this is why elijah is so ready to leave smoke behind. annie tells him to put that cig out cause she doesn’t want any smoke on the baby, and he doesn’t hesitate. i think that, under smoke, there was an elijah who didn’t want any of this. elijah ain’t want any of what he had to deal with. elijah didn’t want to be smoke, but smoke was necessary for elijah to survive.
Yessss to all of this, which I why I will always cry a couple of tears for Elijah. Smoke was necessary to survive, but he was TIRED, and I think Annie genuinely was a safe place for him until the death of their baby girl. I believe Elijah felt like he wasn't any good because he killed his father in addition to the likely verbal and physical abuse endured. He meets Annie, she is safe, she loves him and sees Elijah and not necessarily Smoke depending on when the 'SmokeStack Twins' start building their reputation. Annie becomes pregnant. He feels like he's going somewhere in life and then their baby dies and all of these terrible thoughts return, if they ever really left, and he feels like he has somehow enabled his trauma to 'taint' Annie. It has now attached itself to his baby and Annie...so he leaves because he can't take it and doesn't want it to keep impacting people around him. But Stack would never willingly leave his side and Elijah is helpful but Smoke gets shit done. So, he decides Smoke must be who he really is now or needs to be in order to keep the world from affecting him and keep him/Elias safe.
Smoke is also quiet and observant, which puts most people on edge; the quiet of it all. He doesn't draw attention to himself partly because it gets easier to maneuver in the circles they frequent, but I also think it's a bit of a mask that keeps people away. The man is seen as this 'big, bad, no feeling having person' but he:
- Openly tells his brother that he loves him
- Teaches a little girl an important life skill
- Hugs his friend Bo Chow when he greets him after many years and briefly tells him about the money he and stack made...which isn't made to feel like he would just tell any o'l person this info
- Visits his daughters grave, brings her flowers and was therefore thinking of her likely when he saw baby girl outside the store and Lisa
- Faces his woman who he clearly yearned for years and melts into her embrace. I'll also add that he wears the mojo bag that he doesn't really believe in...but he loves Annie, respects her and likely kept it to keep her as close as his military dog tags.
- Tells his cousin to essentially want more from life and live a life that Elijah had sought but due to his father's behaviors, had essentially been told he didnt have access to...
- Apparently had acknowledged Mary's mother and her hand in caring for him and Elias although this isn't elaborated further in the movie.
- Wanted to hand the money over to Cornbread in his HAND as a sign of respect even though he didn't really 'get' what was happening.
- Looks to Annie for direction as he seemed to respect skill/information rather than sex/gender which is different than what most horror movies depict.
- States that the BEST thing about him...is Stack and does everything in his power to protect him.
There are so many other points that I can list, but it hurts my heart that this character seemingly thought so lowly of himself. The people around him clearly thought that he had something to offer, which I think is seen with Stack, Annie, Bo Chow/Grace, and Sammie. I think Smoke removed his mojo bag because he didn't think he deserved the protection following the events of that night after the Montague of the community coming together to help get the Juke together and thinking all of these people are now dead. Dead in connection to him. Smoke is a man of his word and offers protection so one last effort towards that is to kill the klan members he knows are coming. I don't believe that he expected to see Annie, and that maybe is what makes his ending a bit sweet in a way. He didn't know what would meet him on the other side and there is the woman he loves, the woman who created space for him, the woman who loved Elijah telling him to put Smoke away. To let go of that heavy burden and accept this new existence that received his wife and baby before him. And if he is wherever they are, then maybe things are alright because "Papa's here," too and Elijah can be seen and loved there.
*I think that these pieces can be factored into Elijah's decision to ultimately leave Annie when he did.
I love when my people give their analysis of Black media. This was so beautiful.
his brothers bestfriend pt 5
✗ warnings: none (sfw), clingy!stack, soft!stack
synopsis: stack pulls up on you because he misses you!
you walked to your front door unlocking it, and opening it.
“hey” he smiled hugging you. you hugged back before he pulled back kissing you letting his hands slide down to your ass.
you huffed kissing back as he gripped your ass. “stack-“ you stepped back and he groaned “what?” “what do you mean, ‘what?’ you can’t just walk up in here and kiss on me” you told.
“i told you i wanted to see you” he chuckled “yeah but i thought that meant you wanted to hangout not jump my bones” you crossed your arms.
“you right, my bad. you just..you look so good”
alexa, play ‘easy’ by the commodores!
you rolled your eyes and walked towards your couch. elias followed and sat next to you pulling your legs onto his lap. he started rubbing your legs.
“you soft” he practically moaned before you looked over him seeing how enamored he looked. “you wanna watch a movie?” you asked “yeah, c’mere though” he signaled you closer. you were now attached at the hip.
he reached for your hips to which you looked up at him. “can i?” he asked softly as you nodded. elias then grabbed your hips and placed you on his lap.
he kissed your forehead and wrapped you up in his arms. his big, strong, secure, arms.
you searched for a movie to watch before deciding on some cheesy flick. you two weren’t really paying attention anyway, you just enjoyed being with him. just as he enjoyed being with you.
the next morning came quick and you woke up on your couch with stack still asleep behind you. his big burly arms draped around your waist.
now granted it wasn’t all peaches and cream. he was snoring. in your ear.
you had half a mind to wake him up but that all subsided once you seen his relaxed sleeping expression.
he looked so cute.
you smiled and pecked his lips. he tightened his grip on you bringing your head closer to his chest. “go back to sleep, mama. i ‘on’t wanna get up yet” he cooed groggily.
you smiled and did just that.

I can't stop thinking about Smoke and Stack's interaction at the jukejoint door. I really like the detail taken in the interaction between the twins when Stack interacts with Smoke and the events leading up to it. Michael B. Jordan's ability to create so much nuance between the twins along with Ryan Coogler's writing is genuinely a treat to witness.
I think the story is clear that Stack is meant to be seen as the dreamer between the twins. I think that Stack talks about vision and how this new path provided by Remmick is the answer to all of their problems, which speaks to his ability to take on new opportunities. Is it part of Remmick's hivemind? Sure. But it sounds similar to Smoke because Stack really does think in this larger way, which is implied when Annie questions whether the Juke Joint is another one of Stack's ideas. Stack seems to think beyond what life has told them is for them and what they are capable of achieving.
And there is a part of me that thinks that Smoke admires this in his brother and wants to protect this part of Stack that seems to have escaped their childhood. The part of his brother that laughs, talks slick, is charming and capable of understanding people and seemingly (link) so different from him. Does Stack probably cause them a little trouble at times, sure, but Smoke loves his little brother and his sly ways. They openly tell each other that they love each other.
But I don't think that this means that Smoke doesn't have his own dreams, they're simply muted. When the twins father dies, it is implied that Smoke wanted to go to the next plantation over to get away from town and suspicion. It is Stack who encourages him to go beyond which eventually leads to them going to Mound Bayou. They are eventually met with some kind of hostility as the leader of the town believes that the boys are similar in character to their father, grows suspicious of them and later the twins have to leave to evade further suspicion. But if you listen to how Smoke talks about it, you get the sense that if they could have stayed there - they would have. That Mound Bayou would have been a relief, a wonderful place to build a life. And they were essentially told that they weren't 'good enough' for it and I believe that Smoke internalized this so very deeply.
I don't believe Smoke ever forgave himself for killing their father because it impacted their lives in various ways. He likely has complex feelings about it and felt like he wasn't allowed to really dream aloud. That was no longer afforded to him. But he wouldn't allow the world to tell Stack the same thing. Stack has an idea, Smoke helps him execute it. Smoke eventually states, while holding Stack's body, that the best thing about him is Stack.
There is anguish when Stack dies naturally but what remains is the feeling of failure. It's familiar as he would have experienced this sense of helplessness when he and Annie's daughter died. So, he looks to Annie to see if maybe this time, things can be different...but for a time, it isn't. Smoke pulls Stack's pants up to preserve his dignity as there are other people in the small room and is clearly lost in his grief/thoughts.
Thus, when Stack returns there is a bit of relief that his brother isn't actually dead. He's still here, he's still in there. So imagine how Smoke's heart must have shattered to hear his brother say,
"We was never gonna be free...You know damn well we was never gonna find it...This is the way! Together. Forever. An' I ain't doin' this shit without you. There is no me without you. What's it gonna be?"
And Smoke looks so defeated, desperate even to think this can be restored; they can be restored. Michael B. Jordan does a masterful job of playing emotions through Smoke's expressions, and body language. We see Smoke hold his body very tight and intentionally throughout most of the movie. No grand gestures, always ready to grab his gun and extremely observant. And when he sees Stack again Smoke's eyes are bright with unshed tears, he shoulders aren't square, his body seems loose almost too heavy to carry. Smoke sways a bit and inches towards Stack until Annie tells them to finally close the door.
I think that there is complexity in Smoke's response to this because he genuinely looks broken because...what do you mean Stack that we were never going to be free? When did you stop believing that or thinking there was more that we could do? Or worse...when did you stop thinking there was more that I can do? But he sees that Stack still wants to do this other life with him, and considers should I give in to this?
I think that sense of failure stays with Smoke until he apologizes to Stack for not protecting him and Stack tells him, so clearly, that Smoke always protected him. This wasn't Smoke's fault, it wasn't on him. Smoke doesn't need to carry Stack's loss and he was still there...in some way.
That man loved his baby brother, in his own way, so clearly and openly. And character wise, I wish Smoke saw him the way Stack did, cause I know nobody could say anything to Stack about his big brother. His "sun" if you will...

sobbing because annie and smoke should've gotten to have them a whole HEAP of grandbabies 🤧 smoke woulda been everybody's favorite grumpy old man
Warner bros will pay for their crimes
Film media pages are already starting marketing campaigns for Hailee over Wunmi. Hailee is great but this would be slap in the face for the point of Ryan Coogler’s film. Not sure how you can watch Sinners and focus on her character; I get the obsession for Remmick but Mary ?? Jayme Lawson and Wunmi Mosaku had more of a compelling performance. Jayme had to sing, dance, and act. Ugh
This is why my mind was getting suspicious of the way WB did the marketing. This BS. Again, we must sit and smile while a white woman uses and abuses black trauma for personal gain.
Respectful plus-sized representation in horror
Because I love horror but their depictions of people who are shaped like me are so rarely good that I'm well and truly over it. Here's your precedence, now go do better
Annie from Sinners (2025)
That's it!
Yup! One (1) singular character whose fatness is not used as a recurring punchline, a metaphor for greed and overindulgence, an excuse to mistreat them narratively and/or within the universe itself, or as their single defining trait within the genre I hold so dear
Actively influencing the plot, guiding the other characters (and getting her back blown out all slow and romantic by a fine, loving man while doing so) Annie is a driving force of strength and wisdom throughout the film. A beautiful, plus sized woman getting treated the way a beautiful, plus sized woman deserves
Fellow fats, you know, as well as I do, what representation like this can mean.. and that it should not stay being a one in a million
