Tips for students suddenly and unexpectedly taking online classes.
Tip #1
For love of god mute your audio when you mute your video if you’re going to anything during a live class that’s not sitting still and listening. I mean anything. This morning a prof posted in my pedagogy group about a student who decided to shower during her live lecture. And the whole class heard it.
So this is an extraordinary and stressful time to be a college student. If anyone has questions about online learning, how online platforms work, what to expect from online classes, or if you just want to talk about it, my asks and messages are open.
Now, more than ever, clear writing matters.
I felt my life extend five years with how much this reduced my stress.
if anyone ever tells you that english isn’t ridiculous remember that the reason why we have a silent b in debt is because a group of guys got together to standardise english spelling and got to the word debt, which at the time was primarily spelled either ‘dett’ or ‘det’. so they basically went:
‘everyone speaks latin, right? so let’s put a silent b in debt. like debitum, which is latin for debt. problem solved.’
also the reason why there is a h in ghost is because when the printing press first came to england the only people trained to operate it were flemmish speaking, and they put a h after g because that’s what you do in flemmish. they put shit like ghirl and ghoose, but the only reason why ghost stuck is because people saw ‘the holy ghost’ in the bible and were like ‘well, that MUST be right’.
so yeah english is a really stupid language with some of the most ridiculous spelling

37 Days Till Escapade!
There’s still time to make it to this year’s con. It’s going to be a good one!
Due South was a staple of late 90s slash fandom and predictably popular at Escapade. It was a fun buddy cop show about a mountie and two different Chicago cops named “Ray”, Ray K and Ray V, or as I like to think of them:

The series started out by teaming Fraser up with Ray Vecchio, salt of the earth local Chicago cop with the stereotypical big Italian family and a sadly prescient surname. After two seasons, the show got canceled. Fans went nuts trying to get it renewed. For once, their beloved show actually came back!
But as often happens in these situations, some of the actors had already moved on. Ray V’s actor left the show and was replaced by “Ray” K for reasons too stupid to need exploring at this or any other juncture.
(Okay, look, he’s undercover as Ray V so Ray V can go undercover with the mob. They look nothing alike. Ray V’s family has to play along with this. Like I said, it’s absurd.)
Incidentally, if you see fans using some version of “For reasons that do not need exploring at this juncture”, that’s a Due South reference.
Fraser/Ray V already had a following amongst slash fans of the later zine era, but Ray K hit just at the right time. It was 1997: the public was getting online, and fandom was expanding rapidly. Free mailing lists and online fic archives were possible on a scale they never had been before. And Callum Keith Rennie is awfully pretty, isn’t he?
I think you can guess what happened next.
Overnight, the new juggernaut with The Pretty One dwarfed the old ship. The show changed tones somewhat, and later viewers who were pimped in through the new ship didn’t always even bother to watch the first two seasons. Remarks were made about the shipability of the balding one. Fans who felt like their efforts to save the show were what eventually got it renewed felt betrayed both by canon and by fandom.
Massive butthurt ensued.
So virulent were The Ray Wars that there are places on LJ/DW where to this day you cannot talk about Due South without instantly restarting the fight. If there was one silver lining it was the many snarky Livejournal icons proclaiming: “I swing both Rays”.
I’m bi and I like terrible dad jokes. I am required to love that.

2000: Season ¾ (Fraser/Kolwalski: who’s really in charge here? Who’s needier?)
2002: Swingin’ both Rays (Fraser cares for both of them, so why can’t we? Is it possible to accept all seasons as canon? Is it necessary, or desirable, to go beyond OTP in order to embrace all the wonderful characters Due South offers?)
2003: Small Fandom or Monster in the Closet by Alice in Stonyland, Sharon Marais (This panel will discuss both viewpoints; audience is encouraged to share their stories and opinions.)
2014: Due South Retrospective (Let’s stage a dramatic historical reenactment of the Ray Wars for the benefit of those who missed it the first time around! Or we could skip that part and just talk about how awesome Benton Fraser is.)
2017: due South: For Reasons That Continue To Need Exploring At This Juncture (Whether long-time fen or new to this fandom, an opportunity to give and get fanworks recs, share links to social media due South community sites, display show-and-tell due South memorabilia, squee about canon and about fanon. Personally, I’ve seen exactly three episodes of Due South: The first one, the first one with Ray K that’s a huge callback to that, and the one where Fraser fakes his death. (What? A girl has needs, okay?)
As pretty much a bystander, I gotta say… wow, the potential between the Rays is so interesting.
Here’s Ray V off on this deep cover mission for ages and ages while Ray K is pretending to be him and hanging out with his family and his old partner. Imagine the loneliness and insecurity of knowing you’ve been replaced at home. Imagine the mindfuck of stepping into some other guy’s life and feeling like a fraud. Ray K ends the series riding off into the sunset with Fraser… while Ray V marries Ray K’s ex wife. Whut?
It is no surprise then that my very favorite Due South vid–and it has a lot of competition because this fandom is known for vidding–is Phoenix by Scribe. It’s a constructed reality of Vecchio’s time undercover. (Helpful of that actor to have been in like 800 mafia canons!) I saw this at Bitchin’ Party a number of years ago and was blown away.

Due South has tons of great fic, making it another great older fandom to check out. The big archive was the Due South Archive, but like so many other great slash archives of ages past, it now resides conveniently on AO3.
I suppose Due South must have had a het arm of the fandom at some point, but if so, I sure don’t know where it hung out. Fanfiction.net has like 800 stories, as compared to AO3′s 12,580.

2 months ago I got an assignment on ADHD in Psychology. It’s due tomorrow and I have written one paragraph…
I had to write an email to my professors in my final year asking for an extension on an essay about adhd because of my adhd.
It began: “So I’m aware of the irony here…”
Just revisiting this to point put that they did give me an extension. I handed in the assessment, did pretty well on it, and the professor I most respected in the university (who ran the class) never said a word about it to me.
It turns out they didn’t care at all about the extended deadline, just that I was trying and that I gave them a heads up when I needed help.
Remember to ask for help when you need it, even if it makes you feel a little silly. Ask early if you can so that the people you’re asking have time to think about a response/plan of action, but if you find yourself stressing out 24hours out from a deadline still just ask.
This has been one of the hardest and most important things I have learnt over the last 10 years.
Ask for help. Ask early. Even if it’s scary.
You are not a burden.
You are not dumb.
You are not expected to already just “know” everything.
Needing help does not make you weak and asking for help makes you incredibly strong.

Listen. It does not matter what kind of student u are. The minute u sit in the back u have no idea what’s going on and the minute u sit in front u suddenly ask every dumbass question that flits into ur brain. We are ruled by the Seats and it cannot be changed, only overcome.
Studies show that sitting in the front of a classroom correlates to higher grades. This might be merely because it makes goofing off more risky, but whatever the reason, if you’re trying to get higher grades this fall, consider choosing a seat front and center to give you a boost.
Heyo it’s back to school time and here’s a research tip from your friendly neighborhood academic librarian.When searching for any topic on the internet just type in the word ‘libguide’ after your topic and tada like magic there will be several beautifully curated lists of books, journals, articles, or other resources dealing with your subject. Librarians create these guides to help with folks’ informational needs, so please go find one and make a librarian happy today!!

Oh! Building on your notes I figured I should mention to everyone that most academic institutions with a library are going to have a page with the research guides the librarians have made for their patrons. This will include basic topic guides on things like how to use the library or how to create citations. There will also be subject guides for areas of study like philosophy or biology. As well as specific course guides to assist classes that are being taught like FM 114: Introduction to the Fashion Industry or BME6938: Nanoparticle Nanomedicines.
If any of y’all have started university totally check out the ones your librarians have put up! There’s a ton up to help you along your research journey. And if you aren’t at university check them out too!! Some of the resources won’t be accessible but there’s loads of information you’ll still be able to use and get to.
Tip for all my student readers: if you’re too lazy to use a bibliography creator like NoodleBib or RefWorks, let Google generate your bibliography entries for you. All you have to do is google the article/book title in Google Scholar, click “cite” at the bottom of the search result, and copy either the MLA, APA, or Chicago cite into your word document.

If you’re in high school and want to go to college? Learn to source! You’ll be way ahead of the curve and it’s 100% more important than knowing what the hell a predicate nominative is.
I use http://owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/ to figure out how to cite for my papers, and it’s been quite useful for the three years I’ve been at this!
Citation generators are great but they are also fallible. I encourage my students to use them but also to use the OWL to proofread them before submitting.

when i was in high school i used to write my papers thinking wow i’m just bullshitting all of this. then like a week before my senior year ended after all the grades were set, i was talking to my english teacher and told him you know i just bullshitted every paper i wrote. he told me that while i may have thought i was just pulling it all out of my ass, i genuinely knew what i was talking about and made well-supported analyses. i only thought i was bullshitting because it didn’t take much effort and it all seemed obvious to me. if you do well on your essays even though you think you’re just making it up as you go, chances are you’re not pulling it out of your ass. you’re just a genuinely talented analyst, even if the analysis that you’re making comes from a subconscious understanding of the material rather than a conscious effort to study it. give yourself some credit.

This is so true! I once had a student confess they “cheated” on an essay because they talked through all their ideas with a classmate and traded papers before they turned them in.
That’s called peer review and it’s a well-established writing technique designed to help you clarify your ideas and support!

For my English essay we were allowed a sheet of notes so I literally spent a week developing THE perfect essay and then summarising each paragraph into one line of shorthand in tiny writing 100%, A*
in US Government last year our teacher said we could have one notecard to use as a cheat sheet and gave us a whole packet (meaning like 10 pages) of things that would be on our test. he said, and i quote, “there is no way to fit everything youre going to need on there so you better study” i fit every last piece of info on that card and didnt study at all i got an a
moral of the story: dont tell me what i can and cannot do
before my midterm in Modern Physics, my teacher told us a story about how one kid kept switching glasses during an exam. he walked over and the kid had red glasses and blue glasses and kept switching between them because he wrote his notecard in red and blue ink. he made a 3d note card.

The best way to study even if you can’t bring a cheat sheet is to make a cheat sheet and write everything you would write on one if you could have one. It’s an awesome method!

The process of deciding what to include on the sheet, summarizing, and transcribing that information means that statistically you will retain more information than if you didn’t make the sheet. That’s definitely studying
Your Words Matter
I'm looking at you - potential mentors, professors, and advisors. The words you say to your students stick with them and have unintended consequences. Therefore, think about your actions.
As an undergraduate, I had a bad experience with a mentor who told me that I had no aptitude or passion for aquatic science and likely wouldn't have a career in it. It destroyed me. I still think about it to this day nearly 7 years later.
Since then I have gone on to get my B.S. and M.S. in Environmental Science with a focus on water quality. I am currently pursuing my PhD and work full time as an instructor and lab coordinator at a local university. I love my job because I am involved in students lives and able to help them along a similar path.
There is always doubt in the back of my mind because of a hurtful comment made by someone who doesn't matter to me know in life. Your students are looking to you for guidance. Do not shoot them down. Raise them up.
when you find an academic source that’s perfect for your paper but it’s behind a pay wall
Deciding to cite it anyway base on the abstract, knowing your professor probably won’t go through and look up every source in works cited
if you guys want to read academic papers but they’re behind a paywall, get the chrome extension Unpaywall. when you visit a site that requires you pay for their journal to view the article, the extension will look for other open access sites that will show you the article for free, and it’s all completely legal. all that money goes to the publisher, the writer of the paper gets none of it. https://unpaywall.org
If you can find out an author’s name, contact them. They may be willing to email it to you.For free.
Check researchgate.net and academia.edu! Also authors’ professional websites.
