A few months ago, my family adopted a woodle who was rescued from the streets. He was severely underweight and they had to shave him because his hair was matted. He's doing way better now, he's at a healthy weight and his hair is gorgeous, and he's such a sweetie. He loves people (except my brother, who the dog will bark at if he so much as considers breathing) and other animals, he thinks he's a lap dog despite being like, seventy pounds, and he commits crimes we never thought possible, like stealing a loaf of bread from the top of the fridge. So my uncle, he just recently got out of prison, he's doing great. But I recently found his "United States vs X" court case thing and like...

What the fuck

He was arrested for possession of meth with the intent to deal. This was a nonviolent crime- he's never committed a violent offense. The court also recognized that him dealing was probably due to poverty and him trying to get money to you know, fucking survive. He got 240 months (twenty years) and then ten years of parole after it. And, despite the judge who sentenced him wanting him to serve this sentence in a prison where his family would easily be able to visit, because we have a great, supportive family and the judge knew that having support would decrease risk of reoffended (which it has, we've all been working to help him with integrating back into society and he's doing great.) And they looked at that recommendation and clearly went "Absolutely the fuck not," because he wound up in a prison in Southern fucking California. When most of our extended family is in Ohio. Which could have very easily massively sabotaged his rehabilitation if this family weren't full of stubborn cusses who did everything in their power to remain in contact and even visit when possible. Sent to a prison on the other side of the fucking country from his home and family for twenty fucking years for nonviolent possession with intent to deal

This sentence was to discourage the general public from considering doing what he did, not really as an actual punishment for him. There were articles written about how insane his sentence was, people arguing that he shouldn't have gotten hit like that, petitions, appeals- twenty years in prison for nonviolent possession and intent to deal. To send a message to the general populace

Some myths I'll always remember:

* Are elephants scared of mice? (They only did that because they were in Africa and had access to elephants.)

* Will a bull run amok in a china shop?

* Is it better to run zig-zag or straight when chased by an alligator?

I love these because NONE of them turned out the way they expected. They went into all three with pre-conceived ideas of how it would go, and each time they "failed." Elephants WILL cower from mice. A bull moves very gingerly through a china shop. It doesn't matter how you run because ALLIGATORS WON'T CHASE YOU.

And each time, they reacted with just... pure glee. "Holy shit, we were wrong! Oh my god! This is great! We were so wrong!"

And that, to me, is what science is. Being excited about being wrong because either way it's information.

Got into a discussion about emergency response at a professional retreat recently and everyone was going on and on about agility, and I was like, "Okay but what about contingency?"

And they were like "What?"

And I was like, "Agility isn't the ultimate form of preparedness. Contingency is. Agility still requires you to flounder and figure out a solution in the moment, but if you have a contingency plan, all you have to do is implement it."

And they were like "But you can't make contingency plans for every situation!"

And I was like, "Yeah, you basically can if you just identify all of your basic dependencies and contingency plan around the loss of any dependency," and then I gave a few examples.

And they all stared at me like I'm an alien.

Anyway, that's how I figured out I'm Batman-coded and also learned how Batman must feel talking to supposedly professional superheroes who never bothered to run disaster scenarios until I pointed out that it's insane that they don't already have a plan for if Superman turns evil.

There’s a phrase that really stuck in my head around this. It was from one of the British divers who enacted the Thai caving rescue, though I couldn’t tell you which one or which interview.

As he described to the interviewer a moment of panic and how he he overcame, the interviewer said, in one of those, summarise-last-answer-given-with-appropriate-levels-of-respect-in-order-to-proceed-to-next-question phrasing’s, “Wow, so you rose to the occasion -“

And the diver said, “No, actually people always get that exactly wrong. In an unexpected and urgent situation you don’t rise to the occasion. You sink to the level of your training.”
