Reminder for this April that the puzzle piece is not inherently bad. It wasn't created by Autism Speaks, rather by National Autistic Society in 1963, made to symbolize that autism was a "puzzling" condition. Many autistic people especially higher support needs folks rely on the puzzle piece's visibility and awareness for safety. Don't judge people solely by what symbol they use or prefer, there's far more important things to focus on this month.

It really really frustrates me when some people, disabled or not, say "well I can do [x thing] because I was forced to" in response to someone saying they can't do something.

"Well I had to eat whatever was for dinner or else I would have starved."

Me too! And I became severely malnourished because I could not eat what was put in front of me.

"My parents hit me if I didn't get good grades so I had to."

Mine too! Except I could not get good grades in a mainstream class no matter how hard I tried or what was at stake.

"I have to mask because I need to keep my job."

Me too! Except I can't even pass an interview because of my limited ability to mask.

"I can't have meltdowns around other people or else I'll be bullied/abused/mocked."

Same here! But I can't hold in my meltdowns.

You need to understand that some people will never be able to do the things you can, no matter how hard they're pushed or what the consequences are for not doing it. I'm really sorry that you were forced to talk, but someone else being unable to speak does not mean that they could if there was enough pressure. Stop assuming that everyone who doesn't mask/speak/etc. grew up in a safe and supportive environment. There are people who would (and do!) die because they're neglected and can't learn to just do things themselves.

I really don't want to be the "other people have it worse" guy or come across like I don't think people are allowed to complain about something just because it's less extreme than someone else's situation, but some of you need to have more compassion for people who are not like you. Just be kind. And if someone says they can't do something, don't assume that it's because they were coddled or whatever.

My absolute least favorite type of "neurodivergence" (used colloquially to only ever mean "Autism and ADHD") misinformation is the type that posits that being neurodivergent makes you a better person.

"Justice sensitivity" does not mean "neurologically I am a good person who stands up for what's right." It means you have a strong reaction to perceived injustice. But it does not mean your moral compass is calibrated well. The white dudes who are most obsessed with taking away Affirmative Action likely also have "justice sensitivity" -- their sense of injustice is just triggered by something different from what triggers mine, because we have different values. Some people's sense of injustice is triggered by pretty much any situation ever not working out in their favor. Those people can still be "justice sensitive" even if you wouldn't think of them as good people.

Also, there is no neurodivergent condition that makes you automatically capital-H Honest. Some Autistic people aren't good at intentionally lying or find it very uncomfortable to intentionally lie, but others lie just fine and I've met some who did it all the time. "Intentionally lie" is also doing a lot of work here, as you can be very dishonest without intentionally lying if you are prone to lying to yourself, which neurodivergent people are no less likely to do.

There is no neurotype that confers superior moral reasoning or instincts.

Like so many times when people are like "I've never met an autistic person who has [insert "stereotypical" trait] it's like. That's because they're not there! They're not in the spaces you can access because they can't access them! And denying their existence will make that worse!

The only thing worse than an able bodied person asking you invasive questions about your disability out of nowhere is when they ask invasive questions about your disabilities to SOMEONE ELSE who is with you. "What happened to him?" maybe you should be more worried about what's going to happen to YOU if you do that shit one more time

Also if it's okay to ask how do you recognise dissociation? I have alexithymia (makes it hard to know and recognise emotions and other things similar to that)

hello thank you for the ask !! i actually have an updated feelings board now on a new app called TD snap. here is the new one:

one change i made is i changed 'dissociation' to 'zoned out' because the wording made a bit more sense to my brain. here is what is in the zoned out folder:

right now it has grounding exercises, slow breaths, eat or drink, and sensory input. i want to put more in there i just need to think of more solutions.

i have alexithymia too !! i have trouble knowing what my emotions are and how to recognise them. i worked out this board with my support workers and occupational therapist to figure out what are common feelings/sensations/needs i have and what are good ideas to help them.

some things that mean i am feeling dissociated/zoned out can be: staring blankly, feeling like i am behind glass/like there is a sheet of glass between me and what i see/sense, moving is difficult/inertia, feel disconnected from surroundings, feel like i am experiencing things secondhand or looking down on myself.

it can be tricky to figure out what it is because so many feelings overlap like i might be zoning out because i am tired or hungry or my blood sugar, because i forgot to take my medications, or because i got overloaded/overwhelmed. also the slow breaths is tricky because my lung function is not very good so if i make them Too slow/deep then it makes it worse. just something to be careful of/see what fits you best

it has taken a long time and a lot of work with supports and myself to figure out my feelings and build the feelings board and it is still a work in progress. i hope this can be a bit helpful though !

I hate when people say that autism doesn’t have a look. Yes, I understand that many low support needs/high masking/level 1s constantly get fakeclaimed because people say they don’t “look” autistic. However, they(low support needs/high masking individuals) usually follow this up by saying “autism doesn’t have a look. Stop saying that”

I want people to understand that to a lot of higher support needs people, we DO look autistic. We do stim publicly. We do grunt, laugh, make noises/vocal stim loudly. We do carry AAC devices. We do look autistic. People can point us out. People can know just from looking at us for a few seconds. That’s the issue I have.

Many of us look developmentally disabled. We look different. It’s frustrating to see time and time again that autism doesn’t have a look when I get singled out in public just for simply existing. It’s just exhausting.

Please in the future rephrase your posts. We are on the internet. We are reading your posts. We’re on tumblr. We’re on Reddit. We’re on Facebook and more. And even if we aren’t, you’re still disregarding those of us who are visibly autistic.

I still get very annoyed by this. LSN and/or High masking people are constantly spewing about how autism doesnt have a look and I just stand there.

I LOOK AUTISTIC!! I am visibly autistic. I stim, I hum, I carry around an AAC device. I don’t have the privilege of even saying that autism doesnt have a look. You guys have that privilege. And yes. It’s a privilege because it’s not something that y’all go through and have to worry about!!

People talk abt the erasure of high support needs autistic people among autism communities on here and that's extremely important but also it honestly feels like people have straight up forgotten that autistic people have Needs. Like needs of literally any kind. I have literally watched people pooh-pooh the idea that autism is a disability (calling it a "metaphorical disability" as opposed to physical disabilities which are "real"), have seen countless memes where the punchline is "autistic person has a common symptom or trait of autism", and you just see a bunch of people talk about how they're super autistic but conveniently are never seen as weird or unlikable and never have meltdowns or lash out and have zero trouble understanding sarcasm or jokes or social cues and hit all their life milestones at appropriate times and aren't lame loser virgins like the rest of you shut-ins. Like it is just extremely common to mock and harass autistic people for displaying very typical autistic traits. There's a point where "dismantling stereotypes" becomes "not actually recognizing the things that make autism autism" and we've really reached it it feels like. As always just a stunning lack of compassion for people who are disabled in ways that disable them and not disabled in ways that are cool to you

me: the autism assessment process is more often than not based around identifying a presentation of autism that is now considered stereotypical and only fits a relatively small part of the autistic population. the entire process of assessing asd needs a revamp so that professionals can move towards evaluating autistic thought and behavior patterns as a whole, instead of trying to stick to the exact presentation that is promoted in old tests and evaluation methods.

Autistic people aren't inherently more bigoted or prejudiced than other people, but we also aren't inherently more just or progressive. We are full, real people with the potential to both do good and do harm.

Yes, I do need people to talk in simplified language with me. Yes I do need people to speak slowly. Yes I do need people to explain things more to me. Yes I do need people to talk to me with simple language. Yes I do need hand over hand with things. Yes I do need things explained multiple times. Yes I do need these things.

That is me. I need that. That doesn’t make me any less.
