Oh wow, that is a good approximation . . . but as @agrimanath wondered in the comments: Why does this work? [Keep reading for an explanation]

For those who need a refresher, sine has to do with the y-coordinate after rotating the point (1, 0) around the origin by a particular angle. [Remember this, it'll be important later!] As for what a radian is, I'll let this GIF I found online explain for itself:

As we just saw above, a full turn is 2π radians. Unfortunately, since π is irrational, we usually just have to settle for its approximations like 3.14, 22/7, or the much less known approximation of 355/113 down below:

[A bit of a memory tip for this one: Imagine 11 33 55, then split it into two groups with the same amount of digits; 113 / 355 is about 1 / π] The astute amongst you may see where I'm going with this now . . . if π is extremely close to 355/113, then a full turn of 2π radians would be rather close to 2 × (355/113) radians = (710/113) radians. So, the mysterious angle of 710 radians is really an angle that is rather close to 113 full turns [*]. And since sine has to do with the y-coordinate after rotating the point (1, 0) around the origin by a particular angle [like I told you to remember from earlier], it makes much more sense that rotating a point on the x-axis around the origin by an angle that is pretty close to a whole number of full turns would land you quite near the x-axis again resulting in a y-coordinate rather close to 0. Hopefully, this explanation was somewhat satisfying, and as always, stay curious! :) [*For those who want to be somewhat more precise, 710 radians is actually more like 113.0000096 full turns if you round up to seven decimal places]

I was 23 before it even occurred to me that not starting with sex ever was an option. The feeling of relief was so great I actually cried. 

You don’t have to if you don’t want to. You can have a fine live without ever having sex, I promise you.

Also, it’s okay to never date anyone ever. It’s okay to never even try it if you don’t want to. 

I wrote a master’s thesis on intentionally single people, and the number of them that said in various ways, “I didn’t know not dating people was even an option at first” was absolutely tragic. They honestly thought they had no choice and it never occurred to them that opting out was even a possibility available to them.  

People honestly believe these are life experience you are required to have AND THEY ARE NOT.

You can just not have sex. You can just not date people. You can completely by-pass one or both of those things. Neither of those things are required to be healthy, happy, normal, mature, fulfilled, or any of the other bullshit notions that get attached to these things.

Sex positivity is about bodily agency which includes the choice to NOT/NEVER have sex, so inclusion of asexual/celibate/sex repulsed people will always be a pillar of any real discussion of sex positivity and sexual freedom.

I asked one of my fellow math teachers why we can’t accept the solution of x=22 by using the negative solutions of sqrt(36)-sqrt(49) to make it -6 - -7 = 1 and she just points to my work and says “six seven” while doing the hand motions 🙃

Ahh, the square root symbol by convention only represents the principal square root. So, sqrt(36) is just 6.

One way you can think of it is plugging in x = 36 into the function sqrt(x) graphed below:

Another piece of evidence is in the quadratic formula shown below . . .

. . . if the square root symbol already took account both the positive and negative roots on its own, then we wouldn't have had to write a plus-or-minus sign in front of it. The reason we put a plus-or-minus is because the square root symbols only refers to one of the two roots.

Finally, consider the following shapes below while keeping in mind that the length of something cannot be negative, so the square root symbol would be referring to the positive square root in both diagrams:

I know that I'm months late to this post, but the actual verse of Revelation 13:18 from the KJV Bible would say this:

Here is wisdom. Let him that hath understanding count the number of the beast: for it is the number of a man; and his number is Six hundred threescore and six.

Thus, if we're really going to try playing by the Christian book, then we shouldn't be trying to connect 666 to the MAGA slogan like @thedurvin suggested. Instead, we should be trying to connect the number to DONALD TRUMP (the man who is responsible for MAGA).

So, where do we start? Well, let's look at his age during one of the more recent apocalyptic years [2020]:

As you can see above, Donald Trump turned 74 years old that year. So, shifting the alphabet until 74 shows up would give us:

A = 49, B = 50, C = 51, D = 52, . . . , W = 71, X = 72, Y = 73, Z = 74

Finally, using this numerological code to add up the letters in the name DONALD TRUMP, we arrive at our desired result:

DONALD TRUMP = (52 + 63 + 62 + 49 + 60 + 52) + (68 + 66 + 69 + 61 + 64) = 338 + 328 = 666

I’m really sad and disappointed to see the maths and sciences being absolute bullshit in a series I genuinely enjoyed.

Normally I would not be judging the maths and science in fiction so harshly, especially in films and tv shows….but this just SCREAMS that it was ai generated.

This is the equation Hodge asked his students to solve when Sherlock and James first met.

AND THE SOLUTIONS ARE LITERALLY WRITTEN ON THE RIGHT SIDE OF THE BOARD

The purple circles are the mistakes that are unlikely to be made by humans (such as odd placing of the square root, losing columns and zeros), even less likely if we assume the person writing is familiar with imaginary numbers, a concept that most find difficult to grasp.

Another thing to note is that the steps for solving this equation are not written in order on the board, rather they’re randomly sectioned and spread out across the board.

I would ignore this if it were a throwaway cool math trick for Sherlock and Moriarty’s first meeting……..but as it becomes a major plot point with James stealing the formula…….

These are screen caps of James holding the “formula” in his hands. And it’s just…..the last few lines of the equation written on Hodge’s board. You can easily see the identical lines by comparing these with the pictures above.

It even says quadratic formula….the thing all of us learned in middle school. Also there’s just long division on there for double checking I guess?

And the equation is incomplete (see red circle, it’s missing a zero), rendering the solution completely meaningless.

As for saying that “since there’s a positive and negative root for each equation, we’ll be able to find a way to reverse the effects of the poisonous gas,” that has so little to do with the mathematic principle that I genuinely don’t know where it came from. No one who knows imaginary numbers would write this…..so I can only assume that it’s ai generated, too.

I want to make it clear that I’m not writing this to mock anyone or show off my math skills (I’m a high school student who’s terrible at it.)

But I can’t help but feel anger and frustration that they would use ai so carelessly for such an important part of a series. It’s the equation that has supposedly killed villages of people and is threatening world peace! It’s the equation that drive Sherlock and his father, Holmes and Moriarty apart for Christ’s sake! You couldn’t have consulted a professional or even just put in a little effort?????
