I haven't posted on this blog in years but I was thinking about something today. For context, I worked teaching swim lessons a year ago. We had private lessons before and after our usual classes. A significant portion of these were high-support needs kids. My coworkers were always nervous and talking about not understanding them and I never really,,, got that. They were always super clear for me.

Any "Tell me about a time when..." question can be answered using the same formula called the STAR method:
Situation: briefly (in a sentence or two), set up the conflict. Task: tell what your responsibility was in the overall work environment (i.e. were you a manager?). Action: list out the steps you took to resolve the conflict. Result: give the ultimate outcome.
For instance, "tell me about a time when you had a problem with a coworker."
Situation: At my previous job, I joined an already well-established team in my first year, and started coming into conflict with my manager over task management. Task: As a first-year associate, I previously hadn't had a ton of control over my own deadlines, and I assumed it would be the same on this team. However, this manager put a high priority on autonomy and was a bit more hands-off. Action: I took the initiative to meet up with my manager and discuss what her overarching priorities for the project were, and how my pieces fit into the larger picture. From there, I set up a rough estimate of a timeline for my major tasks, and checked in with her. We were able to tweak the timeline to make sure that one piece of my project would be complete in time for the senior associate to review effectively. I then broke that timeline down even further for my own reference, and sent weekly email updates to my manager to discuss my progress and keep myself on track. Result: Communication vastly improved, and we were able to finish the project with plenty of time to spare. I also developed a timeline template to provide to our intern, which helped her stay on track too.

If you don't judge people for saying "sorry ahdh brain" in public, then don't judge people for saying "sorry schizophrenia brain" in public
If you correct people when they misuse the term "ocd" then you need to correct people when they misuse the terms "psychotic", "delusional", "hallucinating" and "schizophrenic"
If you don't stare, laugh at or fear a stranger in public flapping their hands, then you need to do the same for a stranger in public talking to someone who isn't actually there.
If you give a trigger warning to sensitive topics then you need to give a trigger warning to unreality and false information as a prank.
If you want to normalize medication like antidepressants you also need to normalize medications like antipsychotics.
If you don't like people without your disorder joking about it online and report it as harassment, then you need to do the same for the tons of nonschizophrenics making "schizoposting" memes to make fun of us.
Just please include schizo-spec and psychotic acceptance into your mental illness/neurodiversity acceptance. We are part of your community whether you like it or not. We are constantly stigmatized, misrepresented and made fun of. We do what we can to help you, please return the favor.
Mental illness/neurodiversity acceptance is an ongoing action. We will get nowhere in the long run if we split the community into the "in" group and the "out" group. We could all accomplish so much if we worked together. But you need to include the "weird" people that don't fit into your aesthetic and don't fit the social norms.
Us psychotics and schizo-specs have been struggling for years and have been the only people fighting for ourselves while the people we plead to barely see us as human. If you are nonpsychotic and nonschizo-spec, you can help us more than you realize. Please include us and stick up for us the same way we have been including and sticking up for you.

A lot of things that seem obviously implicit in speech AREN'T obvious to autistic people. So we inherently think it's necessary to specify things that might seem transparent to neurotypical people because usually WE'RE the ones who need those explanations

i feel like tumblr has kind of changed the meaning of the word "echolalia" into something that can be more precisely described with "vocal stimming." people on here use echolalia to mean "repeating a word or phrase over and over because it feels good" which fits the definition of vocal stimming. that's the established term for doing that; echolalia usually means something else.
the classic meaning of echolalia isn't repeating a word that sounds good, but is actually a conversational pattern where one person repeats the last thing that got said. for example, someone might say to me, "i'll bring you the rest of the articles tomorrow" and i'll reply back "articles tomorrow." it could also be just repeating yourself after you've finished talking, like i'll say a sentence, think i'm done, then catch myself repeating the last few words of the sentence.
i also do this in ASL, so it isn't just about the mouth-feel of the words. also the words don't necessarily have to be particularly pleasing or stand out in any way. when i do it, i'm not even really trying to communicate anything, it's just how i process language. that's different from vocal stimming, which is when a word is so pleasing to say that you say it over and over again.
the reason i care about this distinction is that echolalia is a majorly stigmatized feature of autism (though it also occurs in other neurodevelopmental conditions that affect language). it's often seen as a sign that an autistic person is "low functioning" or as something to be trained out through ABA. i've never met another autistic adult with echolalia, and when i do it, it confuses the hell out of whoever i'm talking to unless they know about it as an autistic thing. i just hope that other autistic people with echolalia know that they aren't the only one who does this, and it isn't anything to be ashamed of
It's actually so interesting you say this, because I have been told I do echolalia but absolutely never related to the way people talked about it online. People talked about choosing echolalia or repeating fun phrases all the time and I don't really do that very much and was actually looking for the word for what I was experiencing, echoing myself and others. Never would've guessed it's the actual definition of echolalia I'm experiencing because I never related to vocal stimming people labelled as echolalia!

We watched the movie A Beautiful Mind in class (for the unaware, the relevant bit here is that it’s about a schizophrenic man). There’s actually a decent bit of overlap between autistic and schizophrenic traits, which you could really see in his mannerisms and speech patterns. Which several of my classmates kept laughing at.
One of my classmates was bipolar and she was pretty open about it. Another one of my classmates did his final presentation on bipolar disorder, and managed to fuck up the most basic details like the definitions of mania and hypomania. I looked over at my bipolar classmate and she looked like she was speed running the five stages of grief five times per second. When he was done presenting we were the only two who didn’t clap. She didn’t even say anything during the question period because she was just that done with that bullshit.
Another one of my classmates was definitely neurodivergent in some way, likely autistic though she never alluded to having any particular condition. And I don’t blame her one fucking bit for that. Whatever it was, it obviously affected her speech and communication style, and whenever she had anything to say the mood of the entire class shifted. From my seat I could watch pretty much everyone else and how they reacted to stuff, and whenever she was talking people would start whispering to each other in a derisive tone, broken up only by the occasional giggle. Like they were both offended and amused by her daring to take up space in the discussion. When she gave her final presentation I had to tell the girl next to me to stop whispering and laughing about it to her friend.
Like this shit would be infuriating in any context, but in a fucking psychology class. These were all people who thought that the brain and mind are just sooo fascinating, but still couldn’t be bothered to know what they were talking about, or refrain from openly laughing at neurodivergent people.
I remember my highschool,, meh-ish? And my god I didn't realize how bad it was until I left.
My school supported autism speaks and had light it up blue day, do I really need to say anything more?
The disabled kids were very, very infantalized. It was only that the neurodivergent kids, including me even though I wasn't diagnosed at the time, that were the type of delinquent kids. We had some sort of agency, but I always felt extremely uncomfortable that other disabled kids were infantalized.
Often disabled classmates would have a helper in the class? And most times those ppl felt off.
Excluding the special ed teachers who were pretty n nice n i liked them a lot. I was definitely gay for a few.
I always felt sort of guilty around the infantalized students?? I wanted to call it out but there was nothing I could do, I had no power. But it always felt wrong to treat people that way.
I remember watching a video in child psych class, and it was about autism, i think. And it basically was about this kid struggling a lot like it was some sort of disease, and they framed it in a bad way. But I felt like "this kid deserves to be accepted for who he is" after watching it. And it was an inkling in my mind to know that this treatment of this kid felt off.
In general I didn't know much about stuff, I didn't listen to rumors or anything, I mean, how could I? I was othered even in the more "high functioning" (i use this word with a grain of salt, but I mean the people who weren't infantalized) group of kids. I was bullied by some of them.
But yeah those are my experiences with the school's treatment of disabled students.
This is why we need more neurodiverse people in psychology and special ed professions and stuff. Then again, I don’t blame them for not going that route given how people treat us.
Oh yeah it’s definitely a catch 22. We’re systematically locked out of those fields through inaccessibility in education and the sheer hostility of those spaces, but those problems will never go away without our perspectives being included and listened to
When I was looking at universities to begin my graduate degree, I was toying with the idea of going for special ed. At one well-regarded university, the school's SpEd department coordinator was talking about the various classes and how their professors were considered experts in their field. I asked, "The professors who teach the class on autism, are they autistic?" She was gobsmacked. "It's 'people with autism,' please, that's how we say it," she chastised me, "and...I have no idea. Wh--ha--are you asking me to diagnose a colleague???" The rest of the prospective graduate students looked at me as if I'd said something incredibly insulting or disgusting.
I did not choose to study at that university.
I love that she immediately jumped to "I’m being asked to diagnose my coworkers" (which to be fair, she probably shouldn’t do) rather than "this prospective student wants to know if any of these professors are diagnosed with and open about having the condition they are teaching about"
Like the concept that a person could be diagnosed as autistic, decide they want to study autism due to it being personally relevant, be successful enough to end up teaching a class on autism, and do those things without keeping their diagnosis a secret
And that someone interested in studying at that school and taking that class might want to know if that did indeed happen, perhaps because that student is also autistic

This reminds me of that one time my university decided to organise an autism congress. Obviously, it attracted a lot of autistic people, especially recently diagnosed ones. And to be fair, they did include one or two stalls ran by organisations that help people with disability administration. But it was organised solely by neurotypicals. People were rude to you if you used identity first language. There were several lectures that were promoted as aimed at autistic people, but it was just neurotypical professors and PhD students presenting their bullshit theories. I went to two of them. The first one was about "autism and emotions" but if was just a student talking about how they had devised a number scale for autistic people to rate their emotions with, despite the fact that a lot of autistic people are notoriously bad with abstract number scales. The second one was research about autism and depression but the basic statement was that autistic people are basically incapable of living a happy life regardless of circumstances.
They were planning a second edition, but they got so many complaints they cancelled it.
But like: that's the type of people that do research about us.
"Well we looked at a bunch of autistic people, a group who are widely mistreated in a variety of horrible ways, and it looks like they were all depressed, so we can only conclude that autistic neurology itself causes unavoidable lifelong misery. Nothing to be done about it, we simply cannot help these poor tragic people to have fulfilling lives"

Also my parents: You can't be autistic, this doctor guy who talked to you for twenty minutes over a video call (that we went to for anxiety) says you're not.

In order for disabled people to receive any sort of financial assistant for their housing, food, bills, medical supplies, etc., they cannot ever have more than $2,000 of resources to their name. Ever.
It doesn’t matter what it’s for.
You’re saving up for a new wheelchair?
For college?
To put a downpayment on a house?
Hell man, you just happen to budget for once in your life so that you can have some extra money in case something bad happens?
Your benefits immediately get cut off if you’re a cent over $2,000.
And, even worse, you usually end up having to pay back every dollar the government gave you that month.
So say you get $400. If they find out you’re twenty dollars over the resource limit, you have to give them all $400 back and you undergo an investigation of your funds to see if you will continue getting money.
“What if I spend the money that day?”
Doesn’t matter. In fact, from what I can tell, people who do this are actually put under investigation for fraud.
And yes, this system literally kills people.

My brother has been on California State SSI for autism for the last 10 years, and he absolutely has to (no joke, HAS TO) spend all 720 bucks of his SSI every month, because if he puts it in the bank he risks losing his SSI altogether.
Sometimes, at the end of the month, he has no idea what to do with his money because the whole month went by and he still has 400-ish bucks in his account, and he fucking panics because he doesn’t want to get anywhere near 2,000.
And here’s the funnest part of the story!
One day he did a huge commission on Second Life and wound up earning 1500 bucks off of it, and he told the guy to donate it 500 bucks at a time over 3 months. The guy didn’t want to, and just donated all 1500, which put my brother at 2,036 bucks.
The state IMMEDIATELY (I’m talking less than an hour) called him up to tell him over the phone that they were canceling his SSI, because they noticed he had gone over the 2,000 buck threshold. He had to tell them that someone had made a charitable donation to him and that this was not a common occurrence in any way shape or form, and upon not believing him, my mother had to call to talk to them as his legal caretaker and say basically the same thing until they called off the cancellation of his SSI money.
He also had to cancel his renter’s assistance because it put him to 1,062 a month, so if he went 30 days without spending any money they’d cancel his SSI altogether. Like, none of us in the family have any fucking clue why that regulation is in place and it’s the stupidest shit in human history.
Please, legal side of Tumblr, tell me what positive reasoning this law has?
