the thing about the "um excuse me if you're as poor as you say you are why don't you just sell all your most treasured possessions" thing that people love to trot out as some kind of "gotcha" is that they do not acknowledge how fucking soul-crushing it is to be in a situation that is already destroying your mental health and then be forced to sell one of the few things in your life that still bring you joy

and an additional layer of this that nobody ever likes to acknowledge is:

human beings genuinely need to have fun and enjoyable things in our lives so that we do not just fall so deep into depression we jump off the nearest bridge, but in the current world we live in, having fun costs money. every list i have seen of "fun things you can do for free!" still costs money, it just costs an amount of money that is inconsequentially small to the person writing the list but that could easily be what a poor person has to live on for an entire week

"sit in a coffeeshop and journal!" coffee, journals, and pens cost money

"go to events with your friends!" event tickets and bus fare/gas cost money

"cook a nice home-cooked meal!" ingredients cost money. if people could be doing this one they already would. do you think poor people eat ramen and peanut butter sandwiches every day for fun

"take up a hobby, like crochet or watercolor!" those supplies cost money. yes i know you can get a lot of craft supplies at the dollar tree. someone with thirty cents in their bank account cannot afford that

"go hiking!" gas money, hiking shoes, and clothes that won't be covered in holes by the time you get off the trail all cost money. if your closest hiking trails are national parks you've also gotta pay to go into those

everything costs fucking money. when you are poor, often the only way you can do fun things is 1) because someone you know with more money than you offers to pay for it for you, or 2) by utilizing things you already have at home, which you cannot fucking do if you sell everything you own

so yeah tl;dr when i see someone asking for money for groceries/rent/bills/etc and i also know that person has like a wacom tablet or a playstation or whatever i do not judge them, i simply think "i am glad this person is able to get some joy still" because i hold the extremely controversial opinion that not wanting to kill yourself shouldn't be a luxury that only rich people can afford

Yeah, I actually really like that he’s not covering it with any political message. It means the fascists aren’t fighting against an opposing ideology, they’re fighting against... a guy who likes painting food. Rain (any pronouns) is a genderfluid model & posts a lot about how their ability to “pass” as either a man or a woman influences them, and shows off the absurdity of double standards such as mens vs womens olympic uniforms and societal treatment based on perceived gender

They’re also incredibly patient with transphobes and other bigots, and much more so than most of us can manage and I think it’s amazing that they put up with what people say & do

I also think it's really funny that the only groups to successfully contact the people North Sentinel Islands were extremely polite Indian anthropologists. Madhumala Chattopadhyay and a team of anthropologists had multiple instances of peaceful contact with the tribe, because--hold onto your hats--the anthropologists respected them, offered food and goods (coconuts and iron), and left when told to leave.

Additionally, Chattopadhyay came to the conclusion that--don't be shocked!--further contact of these tribes was neither necessary nor helpful. She was quoted by National Geographic in saying:

“The tribes have been living on the islands for centuries without any problem. Their troubles started after they came into contact with outsiders. The tribes of the islands do not need outsiders to protect them; what they need is to be left alone.”

To any would-be John Chaus out there whose desire to preach to the "godless tribes" overrides their survival instinct, please take a note from the people with actual experience relating to the Sentinelese and don't go there.

These bidding interactions had profound effects on marital well-being. Couples who had divorced after a six-year follow-up had “turn-toward bids” 33 percent of the time. Sometimes I think about my life through the lens of the past.

How many things do I suffer though because of the greed of European “explorers” and American imperialism.

I leave the ‘āina. I leave my ‘ohana. I leave my heart. And I suffer at a job I hate. And I spent years wearing a fakey costume and smiling for tourists and pretending I felt anything other than empty.

I colonized myself. Made myself palatable for tourists. Made myself palatable for tips and a paycheck. And I ate popcorn for dinner bc that’s what we could afford and I spent my extra money making sure my siblings didn’t feel the crushing weight of poverty. And every extra cent was spent trying to save them from how I felt.

Humiliated. Colonized. A joke.

And now I live on the mainland because we cannot afford to live on sacred land. Because haoles move there for paradise, and they kill us as they buy up beautiful houses and pave the road for resorts. Our land. Our ‘āina. And I’m now a walking attraction. And I can do the hula style smile and I can make my eyes shine like diamonds. And people ask me if I picked coconuts from trees and I think about my elders who live in concrete apartments and I miss my grandfather and his warm smile. And I never know if I will see them again.

I used to stare at the statue of Kamehameha. His arm stretched out in a loving greeting. His other hand holding a spear to defend his people. But he leads with the hand. He leads with aloha.

Because that’s what we do. It is what we are born to do. We are born to aloha. To love. To compassion. Even now, even after everything, all I want to do is be kind.

And it’s terrible. But sometimes I just wish he had lead with the spear.

I need everyone to understand this is how it feels to be Kānaka Maoli in this day and age.

We are hanging on here, but everyday it feels harder. And cultural revitalization has made huge steps, and we have come so far.

But they still pave roads for hotels. And most Kānaka are homeless. And we work so hard but the economy is in shambles. And they bulldoze my people for a telescope. And the Navy poisons the water again and again and again and then dumps it into the ocean.

And we try and we try and we try and we try. And I am so tired.

America has perfectly trapped us in an eternal hell.

Tomorrow marks the annexation of The Hawaiian Kingdom. The turning point.

Please understand. There is no paradise under American occupation.

Fractal Architecture throughout the African Continent

Classical architecture consists of mostly Euclidean or flat shapes and straight lines (bricks, boards, pitched roofs etc). Fractal Architecture consists of spherical or curved shapes that can be found in nature. Fractal architecture is essentially the opposite of Classical architecture and is generally defined as contemporary architecture. However this form of design has been tradition in many African tribes and villages for ages. Specifically when looking at the forms of both modern huts and ancient structures. These structures fuse materials, functional design, and aesthetic in an eco-friendly way.

If you have been following my blog for a while, you may have noticed many of the newer buildings possess a space-like or otherworldly vibe. This stems from the practice of using traditional techniques to incorporate cones, prisms, and spherical elements into modern design. Modern architecture does not necessarily reference new structures, in this case it represents an ancient technique that is being rediscovered and reused in a modern context.
