as a literature student i have... feelings about 'fate of ophelia'. i know it was released a while ago but STILL
the thing is, on the one hand, its clear as ever that taylor swift is not refering to the ACTUAL hamlet. or shes trying to, but her allusions beyond some actual lyric refs at the end are more so tied to a cultural image of ophelia- i.e., the famous painting by Millias. HOWEVER, in an effort to sound super deep her and her troupe of fans are arguing this is a beautiful reference to a tragic heroine.
ophelias entire story was that she was driven mad- not just by love, but by HORRIFIC treatment by men. the moral of her story was not being rescued.
she was not a disney princess. she was a tragic figure. its weird to treat her story like this, but i could have taken it. i really could have. shallowness isnt a crime after all.
its the fact her fans now want to claim she is the greatest songwriter of all time. its the fact her fans treat this like some sort of beautiful homage to a woman whose life was RUINED by men.
