My diabetes journey has surpassed a year now! It started with all the insulin pens and needles (pictured left). I don’t have a single photo of my own pens because I was shy about my usage and about being diabetic in general at first. It’s really strange to stick your own body with needles all day long in full view of strangers and fellow classmates. It was an arduous battle I won as my A1C levels plummeted from 13 to the healthy range of 6% after my first few months after my diagnosis. 6 months into my journey my insurance finally agreed to cover part of my insulin pump therefore I was able to get all the gadgets (pictured right) including my purple insulin pump (center photo). I was able to apply for financial aid through the insulin pump company to virtually cover the rest. The insulin pump was a level-stabilizing game changer as well as the enlite continuous glucose monitoring sensor. One press of a button on my pump and I can tell my current levels due to the sensor attached to my skin sending signals to my pump. I will never forget the many tears and “whoa is me” moments I expressed early on. All my favorite foods I passed in the grocery store that I could no longer eat taunted me. What’s much worse was the shaking spells I would get when waking with very low levels each pre-pump morning and needing to immediately grab some juice. The difficulties didn’t magically end when I got a pump and sensor. The beginning of my sensor days were many sleepless nights as my first box of sensors were defective in some way. My pump woke me up with a loud beeping telling me my levels were so low is was going to halt the ongoing basal insulin. I would check my actual levels with my meter and have normal levels. I just gotta learn how to adapt better when new issues come up. Now that I’m through the worst of it I see how I am lucky to have the resources I do in this modern society. Type 1 Diabetic and experiencing my best blood sugar levels yet due to being newly vegan.
