I think a lot of people feel pressure to follow an expected path. I was certainly not immune to that. But over time you learn that it’s better to pursue and work toward the things that make you happy and fulfilled and not the things that other people think should make you happy and fulfilled.

YASSSS. I’ve always felt that Blood Red Road by Moira Young was the YA version of Mad Max movies because of the landscape, terrain, and now it definitely fits with Fury Road because BRR has a female protagonist and there is a badass gang of girls called the Free Hawks.

As a closeted teenager, thinking about any kind of future for myself was an act of speculative fiction. I attended a conservative all-boys prep school, a place where, at the time, athletes were kings and heroes and there was only one way to be a man. Any deviation from that way was seen as a personal failing. And I was failing. I had deviant desires and strange daydreams. I was different. I also had no gay role models and no books with gay characters to look to. Without any external guidance to look to, my imagination had to provide. When I daydreamed about a life out of the closet, a life of openness, I was writing fantasy. I had to create a world so very different from my own. When I read a character in a book as gay, in spite of any authorial intent, I was writing fan fiction. I created the world I needed in an alternative universe, one where I was out, my friends and family were accepting, and the heroes of my favorite books were just like me (Ironically, I considered Ender’s Game the queerest of all my books, and loved it largely for that reason…just goes to show, readers bring what they need to a book and the author best get out of the way…). Amazingly, in the years since I finished high school, the world of my fantasies became my reality. I came out; I traveled; I fell in and out of love, then in again. I was lucky to have friends and family who embraced me, and later embraced my husband. Thanks to generations of LGBTQIA+ activists, I was able to bend reality to match my teenaged daydreams. And yet, in the books I loved, the speculative fiction that had trained me to dream other possible worlds, the characters were still mostly straight. So I set out to write the YA novel that I wished had existed when I was a teenager.

DNF-ing one book means you have more time to pick up another story, one that might be exactly what you’re looking for, with characters that light up your imagination. Closing one cover might lead to a realization about the kinds of themes you gravitate towards, and the type of plot twists that distance you from a story. Allowing myself to DNF books has not only made my reading load lighter, but also more fun. I don’t feel pressured to keep up with hype, and I can always find another book to enjoy.

Hey there! I wanted to ask for some help. I'm having trouble writing an argument in my story. I haven't written any arguments before, and no matter what I do, it just sounds wrong. Any advice? Thank you!
Great question!
First of all, make sure you know what each character wants from the argument. Why are they arguing? What are their motives? What are the stakes?
Then you need to look at each character’s voice. How have you made their voice distinct from others in regular dialogue? Apply that same voice to the argument. Everyone has different argument styles and so will your characters. Some people are calm and collected, other people yell at the drop of a hat. Determine the argument styles of your characters.
But the most important piece of advice is to read the argument out loud. By saying the dialogue out loud, you should be able to hear the parts that sound clunky and wrong. Once you’ve zeroed in on what isn’t working, rewrite it differently and repeat until you’ve found something that you feel fits the characters.
But that’s just the dialogue. An argument is so much more than just words. Remember that people move around while arguing and make gestures. If any of your characters have a nervous habit, maybe they would be doing that movement in the argument. Think about how your characters move and how being angry would exaggerate that movement.
If all else fails, grab two friends (or however many people you need for the argument) and get them to act it out for you. It might help you to pinpoint what isn’t working.
Also, this is your first time writing arguments so don’t be hard on yourself! Just keep plugging away and you will end up with something that works! Writing is rewriting. Don’t be discouraged!
June 3rd 1808: Jefferson Davis born
On this day in 1808, the future President of the Confederacy, Jefferson Davis, was born in Fairview, Kentucky. Davis spent much of his youth at the family cotton plantations in Mississippi and Louisiana, which contributed to his ardent support of slavery. He graduated from the West Point military academy (though not without causing trouble - being implicated in the 1826 Eggnog Riot) and entered the army, during which time he fought in the Mexican-American War. Davis entered politics in 1845, and worked his way up to Senator for Mississippi and US Secretary of War under President Franklin Pierce. While initially voting against secession at the outbreak of the American Civil War, Davis went with his state and supported the Confederacy. In 1861, at the start of the war, he was elected president of the Confederate States of America unopposed, having been sworn in as provisional president that February. Davis served as President until the demise of the Confederacy as the seceded states prepared to rejoin the Union after the North’s victory in the Civil War. Despite his success at keeping the Confederate war effort going for longer than was initially expected, he is generally considered ineffective compared to the Union President Abraham Lincoln. Davis failed to secure international support for the Confederacy, and caused rampant inflation when his administration printed money to cover the war costs, which led to violent protests in Richmond. Davis was imprisoned after the war but was never tried and was released after two years, being pardoned by President Andrew Johnson in December 1868. Davis died in 1889 aged 81, after having popularised the ‘Lost Cause’ interpretation of the war which praised pre-war Southern society, and condemned the following period of Reconstruction.
For Jen Brooks’ character Jonathan Aubrey, high school sucks. He’s friendless, barely getting by in his classes, and crushing on a girl who doesn’t notice him. But fortunately – or unfortunately – for him, he has the power to change his life. Or, at least, to change the alternate worlds he creates for himself in Brooks’s debut novel In a World Just Right.
After coming out of a coma as a kid, Jonathan has the ability to create alternate worlds – ones where he can be everything he’s not in a reality. Though feelings of grief and loneliness often cause isolation, Brooks knows these are universal feelings.

Kylie Boazman reviews the portrayal of autism in How to Fly with Broken Wings by Jane Elson at Disability in Kidlit:
Anyone buying the book will note that the publisher’s description and all of the reviews mention that Willem has Asperger’s, so it’s clear to readers that his standardized traits are meant to represent autism. Willem stims, dumps facts on people at random, counts obsessively, interprets words literally, doesn’t want his food to touch, and reduces facial expressions to “happy face” and “sad face.” Although I always appreciate seeing young characters with anxiety, it’s hard to see Willem as a positive representation of autism for other kids when the author won’t identify him as such.
As in many literary depictions of autism, Willem seems to check off all of the diagnostic boxes without having much of a personality beyond this. Willem isn’t always treated with respect or dignity, particularly when he’s reduced to facts about airplanes and telling people that he can fly. There are also moments that Elson’s writing verges on tropes: in the middle of the book Willem suddenly becomes a magical autistic detective, the likes of which are too often seen in books or on television. He pulls out several pieces of physical evidence and lines of argument to prove that one person wasn’t involved in gang riots, although these abilities are never previously mentioned.

As casting news and developments for Shadowhunters, the new TV adaptation of the Mortal Instruments, are announced, a set of Cassandra Clare’s fans have gotten more and more rowdy. They’ve sent racist Tweets out about the casting decisions. They’ve released private direct messages sent from Clare. And now the fighting within the fandom and the harassment Clare has received - including threats on her life - has driven the author off of social media.
“I have watched this fight between my fans unfold with horror and sadness,” wrote Clare in a Twitlonger post. “But I have also received a constant stream of hate, threats and insults for 2 straight days because of it. I cannot control the behavior of others, and I will not take sides against any of my fans, because I love and appreciate you all. I hope the fandom works this out, but I cannot make that happen — for everyone who asks me to attack one group, there are people asking me to attack the other ‘side.’ The result of my doing that would be terrible. I cannot be online now, so I am going offline and will return when I can. I am not angry, or flouncing away. I just need a break. Thank you for all those who sent good wishes and told me to take a break. I do really need it.”
Though Clare is now offline, many YA authors have Tweeted or posted messages supporting her.
Shadowhunters is under production and will air on ABC Family within the next year. It will start at the beginning of Clare’s Mortal Instruments series, where Clary Fray’s mother is kidnapped and Clary discovers the world of the Shadowhunters.
