Perched above public streets, they are birdlike things, weatherproof, and they photograph every passing car and file it in a searchable national database. Somebody cut two of them in half at Washington Avenue and Westcott in Houston, spray-painted the wreckage, and left an American flag on one of them. Police were notified on the morning of the Fourth of July. Somebody severed a camera in Rutherfordton, North Carolina. The police department posted the photograph itself and collected more than twenty thousand comments. “Not all heroes wear capes.” “Give them a medal.” Here is what the cameras do when nobody cuts them down. Cops use them to hunt immigrants and to follow ICE targets across state lines and to find women who ended pregnancies in states where that is a crime and to watch exes and to watch women they want, without a warrant and without a judge. A cop types a reason in a box and the box does not check. A man in Burleson, Texas, told deputies his girlfriend had taken abortion pills. He showed them the photographs, the FedEx envelope, the instructions. Deputies opened a death investigation into a non-viable fetus, and the district attorney told them the state could not charge her, and they searched anyway: 83,345 cameras across 6,809 networks, a month of everywhere she had been. The reason they typed was had an abortion, search for female. The search reached Illinois and Washington, where what she did was legal. They found her in Dallas. She came into the sheriff’s office a week later, and they thought she had come to explain the fetus, and she had come to report that the man who called them had put a gun to her head. A sheriff in Jerome County, Idaho ran his wife’s plate more than seven hundred times in three months. He typed the same reason every time. Test. The attorney general found nothing to charge him with. He retired in April. The Institute for Justice counts at least twenty-two officers who used the system to track people they were romantically interested in, and calls that almost certainly an undercount. And the cameras keep falling.

Her EVERYTHING. It’s the combination of factors all packed up in one person:

A woman co-lead

A black woman co-lead

A mature aged black woman co-lead

With children

But she’s the absent parent

She has her morals and ethics

She puts them to the side and picks them up as required

Developing anxiety and trauma

The knowledge of when to talk and when to shoot a gun

Just all the competence

She’s messy and sweaty and covered in blood and crying

She’s dressed to glamour and poised and a perfect politician

Most of the characters in the show are canonically having a crush on her

Yet she only has eyes for SecUnit to the point she’s in conflict with half her team

Willing to sacrifice herself over and over to save the weapon sacrificing itself for her

Cracks jokes even when stressed and also gives out genuine compliments

is incredibly complicated and flawed and trying while scared. She is constant contradictions based on her environment and who she’s interacting with.

She is all of that and she’s the central character to Murderbot and the series. She’s the anchor of the show, the most important part. If you removed any of the other characters, the story would continue on. If you removed Mensah, the story collapses and every one dies.

And they gave that role and importance to a demographic combination that doesn’t even make it into science fiction, let alone as such an important character!

realistic but boring: grace was already appendix-free before stratt recruited him, because appendicitis just seems like the kind of thing that would happen to him

Pangur's actually pretty good with dogs! she doesn't love them, but she doesn't get too stressed out by them either (even when she probably should).

my parents have a 120lb Leonberger named Rusty Nail, and Pangur likes to follow her around and make evil chittering noises. and because Rusty doesn't react, Pangur gets to believe that she's won these encounters.

Finally got to read platform decay (long library wait times, but so so worth it) and I have Thoughts. Because like. Freeing the SecUnits. Murderbot is so so hesitant to free other SecUnits. And I think it's because it spent so long being scared of itself. iirc, it wasn't sure if the murder rampage it did was something it wanted to do or something it was forced to do, and the governor module hack was just in case it was the latter, but it couldn't ever be sure. Not until Artificial Condition. But that's years (35000 hours, about 4 years) of being sure it was a killing machine. It literally named itself Murderbot. And that kind of thing leaves a mark on a person. And then when it did try and free other bots, the one that accepted (Tlacey's ComfortUnit) was one that it thought of as "not a threat", and the one that didn't (the CombatBot in I think Exit Strategy) was a massive threat and tried to kill it over that. So it spends all its time watching media wherein rogue SecUnits are Evil and Scary and About To Do A Murder, it thought that that was a possibility for itself for years, and it didn't have any examples of other bots that could Do Murders but also choose not to once freed

(Add on to that the fact that the company gave it a lot of mining installation assignments, where the humans were all miserable and enslaved and it was routinely shot at by its own clients and being unable to trust the other SecUnits in the slightest because they could be ordered to kill each other and all that fun trauma stuff)

And then Three is freed. It didn't even do that itself, 2.0 did that because without a bunch of traumatized organic tissue hanging around, it didn't have a problem with it. It didn't even keep its name secret, it's not going to have the same baggage around freeing bots that Murderbot does. And neither does Three. Three had friends, in SecUnits One and Two. Three has the helpme.file, which shows it a SecUnit helping people and being a good person. Three's experience with being free so far is being able to help people, being treated as a person, and having a great role model in Murderbot, a SecUnit that people like and are willing to risk their lives to save. Three hasn't had its hope and faith and trust that other bots can be good crushed again and again. Three is less experienced with being a person than Murderbot, but Murderbot is a massive cynic slowly crawling its way up into being less of a pessimist, whereas Three is already there in optimism and having a lovely time. So of course Three has no issues with freeing every SecUnit it passes by on the torus. And of course those SecUnits, who have Three as a role model now, and whatever files Three decides to give them as well, also don't have the same hangups as Murderbot

(Three being not as experienced really shows though, because Murderbot had to give the SecUnit on the torus extra codes to help it survive, things Three didn't give it presumably because it forgot it would need them)

It frees a SecUnit on the Hell Planet after it has a good proof of concept in Three. SecUnits can be freed without going on murder rampages, and when it tries it out for itself and frees one of the BE units, it's rewarded for that. So now it has proof of concept twice over. Three times, with the SecUnit in the torus. Probably more, even. The torus was all abuzz with news of Rogue SecUnits (!!) but there wasn't any news of them killing anyone. That tidbit is definitely in Murderbot's archive, but I don't think it'll examine that too much. I don't think it will think to, not until it has to. I'm very curious to see what will happen when it frees another one, what its thought process will be
