Some AAVE speakers pluralize 'child' as 'childrens'. People get racist about this ("It's already plural!"), but 'children' actually comes from Middle English speakers doing the same thing: slapping their plural marker on word already pluralized by an extinct plural marker.

To oversimplify: in Old English, 'childer' ('ċildra') was the plural of 'child' ('ċild'). Middle English developed an '-en' plural marker, which we see in 'oxen'. Instead of updating to 'childen', people slapped their preferred '-en' onto the end of 'childer' - so now we have 'child-er-en'. AAVE carries on this tradition with 'child-er-en-s'.

"Pure" language is just impurity obscured by the passage of time.

I know I already made a post to this effect but it's so baffling to me when someone defends the fact that headphone jacks are slowly but surely getting phased out by smartphone manufacturers with some variations of "wireless headphones are more convenient anyway" bc like. If we're talking about convenience what I like about wired headphones is that they conveniently have a single plug that makes the same damn pair of headphones universally compatible with every single audio-output-capable device I own, from my phone and my computer to my fucking gameboy and my casette player, it doesn't get any more convenient than that.

On this day, 6 July 1973, Reverend Ray Broshears, a gay Pentecostal Evangelist, formed the Lavender Panthers, a group of armed street vigilantes who patrolled San Francisco to defend the gay community. The Lavender Panthers’ creation was spurred by the sharp increase in violence against the LGBT+ community. The violence included beatings, verbal harassment, and sometimes death. After the death of Robert Hillsborough in 1977 from injuries he sustained from a gay bashing in San Francisco, the queer community rallied around itself for protection. The Lavender Panthers were the first prominent safe street patrol in the Castro and Tenderloin regions of San Francisco, which were known for their trans and gay communities. Members would patrol the streets, watching for altercations. They frequently carried shotguns and bats. A Time article chronicling the group during the 1970s referred to the Lavender Panthers as a “stiff-wristed team of gay vigilantes.” The reporter notes that Reverend Broshears himself had been the victim of a hate mob outside his mission center which served the queer community. The Reverend told the reporter his goal was to put fear into the hearts of “all those young punks who have been beating up my faggots.” The Lavender Panthers held self-defense training sessions for community members. While the 1970s, San Francisco was flourishing as a space for the queer community, queer people were reluctant to call the police to report violence in case they were accused of propositioning their attacker for sex. Due to the anti-gay statutes, it was dangerous for gay people to come forwards. The Lavender Panthers were an alternative source of safety for the queer community. I couldn't find the photo's author, but most sources state that it was taken in 1956.

The second photo shows members of the Patriot Front group (a white supremacist and nationalist group, formed in 2017, that openly advocates what they call "American Fascism") traveling on the subway during the 250th anniversary of the U.S. independence in Washington D.C., while a Black woman watches them. The photo is by photographer Cheney Orr, taken on July 4, 2026, 70 years after the first photo.
