come to rusty lake we've got sad dutch people doing weird soul alchemy on their family members and also random animals
The vanderbooms and the art of making children by doing anything but having sex
There was once a poll on what was the creepiest/most upsetting type of birth in rusty lake
Somehow, normal sex was ranked second
It's funny to me that this post was just under the one where Laura Vanderboom lost the smash or pass poll by a good margin. Nobody wants to have sex with the Vanderbooms, unless they're specifically into soul corruption or weird reproduction methods
I love youtube off-grid/homesteading videos because they're always like "living the simple life" and then depict a life ten times more complicated than mine
Like I'm sure it's way more rewarding to grow and can your own tomatoes and they're probably healthier or whatever but is it simpler than me giving Coles one dollar to bring a much more safely canned can of tomatoes to my house? No. No it is not.
growing your own tomatoes is a fuck load more simple than having a job and keeping a job plus paying all the fees of living in society.
Most homesteaders still need to have a job and keep a job and pay all the fees of living in a society. There seem to be a lucky handful who have reduced their costs by homesteading (usually due to the free labour of friends and family) but there were easier ways to reduce those cost. In the vast majority of cases, homesteading is a lot more expensive than not homesteading. And where people are saving money, the amount of labour per dollar works out to well below minimum wage in savings.
From what I've seen, successful homesteaders do it because they find it rewarding. Rewarding does NOT mean simple.
I can't speak to Australia, but at least in the US there is another group of homesteaders who are trying to live self-sufficiently off-grid because they expect the imminent total collapse of civilization, and they have fantasies of themselves living happily on home-grown produce while everyone else is killing each other for the last can of tomatoes at the store.
Another thing about this subset of homesteaders* is that they are insistent--proud, even!--of doing things that are unsafe, and encouraging others to also do those things.
One example is canning dairy products (milk, butter, cheese). They'll show up in a canning group and say something like, "Look how I canned all this milk that the store was getting rid of this milk for 50 cents a gallon because it's the last day!"
Sane and responsible members of the group will say things like, "Dairy isn't safe for home canning; if you have fresh milk that you need to save for later, you can freeze it or make cheese!" And, "If you need shelf-stable milk you can buy powdered milk," or "You can dehydrate it at home, but you need a really good dehydrator, plenty of trays, and it takes forever; you're usually better off just buying it."
And then the person who just canned 20 quarts of botulism will start frothing at the mouth about how when the shit hits the fan--
And yeah, I'll grant that if grocery stores cease to exist, and you are entirely reliant for your winter survival on what you can put up during times of plenty, the risk-benefit analysis would be different. But in the actual world that we currently live in, it's false economy at best, and at worst a stupid flex that could end up killing somebody.
Anyway, TL;DR, "simple" often refers to an imagined past when the problems of modernity did not exist--yet somehow, the problems of that era have been left behind--which in turn is often a racist dogwhistle.
(*Besides their substantial overlap with weapons stockpilers/"militia" types.)
The Can/Dehydrate Absolutely Everything people baffle me. Most homesteaders (sensibly) have personal solar panels, because they want to live off-grid and still have electricity. When Shit Hits The Fan, their solar panels will not stop working. Their freezers would work fine. Canning or dehydrating or salting is great for certain foods (especially if you want to ferment, pickle or flavour something) but for so much stuff the best thing you can do to preserve nutrients and preserve it safely is chuck it in the freezer.
Freezers just aren't homesteady enough I guess.
The simplest, but also the most immature, answer is that solar panels are 'cheating.' These people base their doomsday images on Fallout and zombie apocalypse movies. But not even on them but this lone wolf stereotype of a stereotype. If you can just create electricity from the sun, then it means you can bypass the gritty survival of eating canned goods and just live like you used to. And that kills the fantasy.
I haven't seen that kind, all the ones I've seen get solar panels as soon as they can afford them because living off generator power is expensive and sucks (and, unlike solar panels, would not serve you well in an apocalypse because you need to keep buying petrol for them). I don't think I've ever seen these anti-solar-panel homesteaders that you deal with. Variety in every community I suppose.
Whenever I hear homesteaders and trad wife people talk about how much better it is to do your own canning I remember my grandmother telling me about the canning days from her childhood and how she would help her grandmother can fresh fruit (we lived in orchard country) in a hot canning shed built for that purpose for days at a time in the middle of summer
Specifically about how it was hell on fucking earth and how her grandmother fucking hated every single second of it
The moment her grandmother could buy canned fruit easily in the supermarket? Never fucking canned a thing herself again and was so relieved and grateful that she would never have to again
Canning as a hobby in your kitchen? I can see that being fun
Canning because you have a fuck ton of fresh fruit coming off of your trees and if you don't can it all NOW you won't have any fruit for winter and it's all you do from sun up to sun down in the middle of summer?
That isn't a cute fun rewarding time. It's hard fucking labour
When all of us kids were finally grown and out of the house, my parents (finally) separated and sold their house, my mom used her half of the proceeds to rent a nice little apartment that is now filled with her diamond art and the other little things that make her happy.
(Tbh, I think she's the happiest she's ever been since I was born. She would probably agree.)
My dad, on the other hand, took his half and bought a tiny parcel of land with a rickety barn on it with the determination to do the homestead life. It's in the middle of nowhere and off the grid completely: no electricity, no sewage, and has a well to draw water from. It's been a little over a year since he moved onto it full time and he explains his life like this:
"It's simple — simply harder."
Every moment of his day, from the moment he gets up to the moment he goes to bed, there's something that needs built or repaired or prepped. Now that it's warmer, it's a race against the clock to grow and can his food and cut down enough wood for the winter because he lives on a mountain and that means snow comes in much earlier for him than everyone else. There's just not much downtime if he wants to be comfortable and, idk, alive, after the snowfall has blocked him in for weeks.
On top of that, something is always going wrong from the generator (decided to quit working in the dark in the middle of winter), to the barn he renovated to live in (mystery hole in roof discovered just as it starts to piss pour outside, along with a bat just chilling out and pissing off the cats). And it's not like he can just call a guy to come fix it because he's living quite a way from civilization, so dad has to do it all. He's always been the guy to call when you need something fixed, so it's whatever to him, but how many of these "preppers" have that kind of know-how?
Shit, my dad doesn't even have a mailbox bc the mail carrier says that putting one at the end of the little road to his property would be too dangerous, which it would be because it's located on a blind corner with no lights. And that road is nearly always foggy (from the low lying clouds) and driving it at night when you can't see far ahead and there's no street lighting is terrifying.
Despite everything, he likes his life and its inherent challenges, but all these internet personalities trying to sell it as something worth giving up all modern conveniences for because it's "simpler" make me uncomfortable because, no, it's not — and saying so is just downright stupid.
having a headache while hydrated is so unfair. you were supposed to protect me.
I get tension headaches, no amount of water can save me maybe horse tranquilizers could but I'm no horse 🐎

Chronic illness sucks because you’ll catch yourself thinking shit like ‘I wish it was possible to bathe regularly’ or ‘they should invent a digestive system that doesn’t hurt’ and then realise… that’s actually the case for most people. That’s the norm. Not only do most people have that, they don’t even think about it
Basically I think a lot of White ppl think the antithesis to racism is "Black people are inherently Cool, White people are inherently Lame" and it's just very hard to convince them that this is also extremely racist lmfao
It's the combination of "seeing a racialized group as Fundamentally Inherently Good is still dehumanizing and you aren't seeing them as people" and "your self-flagellating White guilt is extremely annoying for the people of color around you to deal with"
"lock in" is probably one of the most important phrases to enter the public lexicon in the 2020s
I'm so mad because it's so hot outside and my only options are: risk a heatstroke or turn on AC and all of the fans and consume a lot of energy (that's also expensive) while making things worse because the external units produce a lot of heat.
We can't keep going like this. But every time we beg for some kind of action for cIimate change mitigation the government flips us off and laughs. Like dude at one point you'll have to put your head outside the window right? When I was little I remember the worst heatwaves were like 37C° now it's 45C°.
We're not close enough to the equator to be having this weather. And I don't even want to think what the people living closer to the equator (especially in Africa) are going through because I know they always get ignored because "it's always hot there" as if this is normal. Why are we cooking ourselves alive?????? Why?????
Tumblr Sexyman Contest 2026 Final Round
Senshi (Dungeon Meshi)
Ryland Grace (Project Hail Mary)
Mr. Ant Tenna (Deltarune)
Tenna art by @9Aaaalt29 on twt
After much pondering I've finally voted. Not telling who. But here's my vague propaganda *wink wink*. It's now your time to choose!!!
GRACE:
I absolutely ADORE Grace as a character but he's played by regular hot Hollywood guy Ryan Gosling. He's not really a Tumblr sexyman, just a regular sexyman. He will do fine even without the title. He's doing fine outside of Tumblr too. I love you, you pathetic wet cat of a scientist (he is soooooooo pathetic). I love whatever you have with Rocky. You're a weirdo, you're a freak. You woke up alone in space with a tube up your ass. I like that. But I wonder if you're here just because Ryan Gosling played your character.
SENSHI:
Senshi is hot. He gets so many panty/bulge shots in canon and in fanart, but remains humble. It would finally be a big hairy man winning instead of the usual twink. Senshi is a treasure of a character and I would be perfectly happy if he wins. Tumblr has changed. We have refined our taste. We could have a bearded dwarf as a treat. We should have a bearded dwarf as a treat, once in a while. However, he has a pretty tame design if compared to other past Tumblr sexymen. He's still arguably conventionally attractive by many standards.
TENNA:
Tenna embodies the quintessence of a Tumblr sexyman. The kind of character that outside of Tumblr very few would ever go this crazy for. When other websites see this flamboyant anthropomorphized TV head and see what fanart is being made of him on here, they will think "yep. That's Tumblr. Those freaks just can't stop fucking all the weird characters". Tenna is an exquisite specimen. A perfect stereotype of a Tumblr sexyman. Maybe this will play in his favour, maybe it will be his weak spot. He's almost too perfect for the title, to the point of being almost taken for granted. Another weak point could be that other characters from his creator have won the title before, Tumblr might crave variety this year. After all, we should all eat a balanced diet.
I miss Mexican food so fucking much man...
If you can wait a couple weeks I'm mailing some of my leftovers from yesterday to you
what companies who sell you anti aging stuff don't want you to know is that if you're chill about aging, your perception of attractiveness changes as you get older. there is no "wall" where you suddenly become ugly and unfuckable because in my experience what actually happens is you get into your thirties and suddenly realize that people in their thirties are hot as fuck and the "flaws" that the beauty industry wants you to panic about are a feature not a bug, and based on the std statistics in nursing homes I don't really expect that trajectory to change.
the op linked the study in the replies & i’ve been skimming it & it’s actually rlly rlly interesting to think abt
https://e1.nmcdn.io/assets/pushkin/wp-content/uploads/imported-files/Wait-theres-torture-in-Zootopia_-Examining-the-prevalence-of-torture-in-popular-movies.pdf
like this sentence from the introduction alone is fucking crazy. “approximately half of adults in the united states think that torture can be acceptable in counterterrorism.” what!
saying this as a lesbian who loves women's boobs--sexually, even! but i don't think that we as a society should consider breasts inherently female or inherently sexual. a flat chest should not be seen as the "default" for gender neutrality but instead just one way a person can present. boobs should be normal. anyone of any gender can have boobs
vegans who refuse to even eat backyard eggs….why
people who think its unethical to eat chicken eggs are like people who think bees should keep all their honey. they literally produce more than they need and your unwillingness to even buy local means you are doing nothing to help them, support your small farmers you heathens
This is not true.
1) honeybees do not produce “extra honey.” And beekeepers don’t take some of the honey, they take all of it.
2) chickens have been artificially selected from naturally producing eggs once a month to producing eggs every couple of days. Their bodies are not sustainable and the health complications of this rapid egg production kills chickens.
Hey idk who like. Lied to you about the way honey farms work, but could you stop spreading misinformation? Are you a beekeeper?
Because I am!
Beekeepers make sure hives are fed before there is pollen in the air, protected from predators and the elements, and have enough honey to sustain themselves. We don’t take all of it.
But overproduction of honey leads to stagnation in the hive. It puts stress on the queen to lay eggs, and when they inevitably fill up all their space with honey (instead of filling up the multiple empty, clean boxes of frames beekeepers might put on top of the main hive box), the queen can get so stressed she dies. If there’s a spike in the weather and the hive hasn’t prepared new queen brood, that’s it! The colony is dead. Because there wasn’t enough space for eggs and honey in the hive.
Beekeepers take excess honey. We are constantly monitoring the state of the hive, checking for parasites, analyzing the eggs for diseases, and making sure they are fed and healthy (usually with sugar water and pollen substitutes until they have made enough honey to sustain themselves in the early spring months). If a queen dies prematurely, we make every attempt to replace her to save the colony.
I know there’s an urge to patronize everyone who works in the farming industry, but try to understand the differences between small scale agriculture and industrial farming. There IS a difference. And stop spreading misinformation.
If you’re this passionate about ethical consumption, look into some of the ecofeminist research on non-hierarchal interspecies relationships (working on building animal-human relationships in a non exploitative way).
But yeah! Stop spreading misinformation! Please 🐝
Also if I can harp on the chicken part?
Yea Chickens are some of the most abused animals on big factory farms and I’ll be the first to admit it’s criminal and more needs to be done to regulate this.
Yes selective breeding over time has caused an increase in the ammount of eggs produced by chickens and factory farms have some messed up practices to get more eggs from them including forced moutling.
THIS IS WHY YOU SUPPORT LOCAL FARMERS AND THEIR EGGS
Many people take to raising their own hens because of America’s immoral treatment of hens in factory farms like you’re not helping the poor chicks by starving these farmers financially you’re just hurting the one people trying to change things and making the OPTION of cage free organic cruelty free eggs even harder to find
Yeah, as someone who like… lives on a chicken and duck farm… Coops help keep wild animals out but birds are kinda dumb. And chickens literally do not need to keep the unfertilized eggs!
Most chickens will sit on unfertilized eggs until they can tell if they are or not… By the smell of rotting egg. Yeah, ew. Farmers can hold that bitch to the flashlight and tell if there’s a baby in there! They know! The eggs are not being abused!
Also, if you separate your cocks and your hens, there wont even be that issue in the first place. Egg-laying is basically chicken menstruation, but unlike mammalian menstruation which is full of blood and dead tissue, chicken menstruation is full of tasty tasty nutrients
Support local farms! Most grocery stores carry eggs from small, local farms that give hens acres of open pasture and healthier housing.
Also, that “selectively bred to lay eggs more often” thing? Literally just comes from feeding the chickens every day. The chicken’s ancestors would only lay an egg when there was abundant food, so people started feeding them every day to get more eggs. That’s it.
I feel like not enough people realize that people under enormous strain act really really fucking Weird
things humans are known to do when stressed:
-hallucinate
-cry over what seems to be small things
-become furiously angry over what seems to be small things
-hit a self destruct button over and over again
-lose all sense of reality
-becoming straight up unable to communicate
-view every situation as life or death
-experience delusions/become vulnerable to irrational worldviews
-perceive hostility where none exists
-become extremely nauseous and/or throw up
-stop engaging in sleeping/eating/basic hygiene
-stop processing sensory input
-process way too much sensory input all at once
-lash out at others/themselves
-and more!
being able to recognize when a human (ie. you or another person) is so stressed out they cannot think clearly is VERY important for conflict resolution and diffusing emotional crisis. highly recommend trying to train yourself at being able to recognize that state of panic- there is a point in which logic and rationality is useless and you have to address the underlying emotional issue first. knowing that saves everyone a lot of pain and struggle.
