If your automated moderation keeps making the same error over and over again and bans a bunch of trans women every six months or so then it's not an error it's a feature of the software. Even if we do believe it's unintentional (not a guarantee given the history of transphobia from flesh and blood moderators and the site owner) then it would still only be an error the first time. It KEEPS HAPPENING to the exact same minority group. If my car brakes don't work, the sixth kid I run over is not an 'error', it's unbelievable negligence.

“Love Languages” are just common couples therapy techniques mangled and repackaged by an unqualified homophobe. Relationships generally need all 5 love languages to be fulfilled, which is to say, everybody needs to communicate with, spend time with, and do things for their partners, and that’s got nothing to do with any special way you communicate affection.

MBTI has been proven completely ineffective at predicting anyone’s success at a particular job, and half the people who take it twice will get different results. Reputable psychologists do not recognize it, and the company that owns the rights to it uses it to scam people. People don’t adhere to strict binaries in basically anything. Very few people are going to be exclusively introverted or extroverted. It’s just astrology repackaged as pseudoscience. Shockingly enough, you can’t boil the complexity of the human experience down to a dozen Types of Guy.

The concept of IQ is flawed from the start— “intelligence” is an abstract concept that encompasses many different skills, from social intelligence to emotional intelligence to the very narrow kind of problem solving intelligence IQ tests generally measure for. It cannot predict how fast you learn, how much you know, or how logical and well read you are. It mostly measures how good you are at solving puzzles. Coincidentally, it’s also a pretty good predictor of income and education level, take a guess why. Most people’s IQ will change throughout their lives, because it’s inconsistent bullshit we’ve only held onto this long because we’re still kinda hoping we can breed the ubermensch. IQ tests and the way they attempt to categorize people are explicitly eugenicist and racist.

BMI was developed by a man known as the grandfather of eugenics, who first of all was a mathematician, not a doctor, and second never intended the formula to be used to categorize individuals. It’s intended to give a rough estimate of obesity in populations, and it’s not even good at that. It hangs around because of fatphobia and insurance companies who want it as an excuse to charge fat people more.

The study which determined people’s prefrontal cortex was still developing at 25… stopped measuring at 25. Evidence suggests your brain probably never stops developing. Stop infantilizing grown adults. This is a branch off from the larger mess of misinformation surrounding fMRIs.

If you haven’t put together what all these things have in common yet, here’s the moral of the story: STOP TRYING TO CATEGORIZE PEOPLE. STOP TRYING TO PUT PEOPLE IN A GODDAMN BIOLOGICAL HIERARCHY. EUGENICS IS BAD, AND WILL ALWAYS BE BAD, NO MATTER WHO’S DOING IT.

rome wound up with emperors as the end state of a long period of recurrent civil war that started over whether to allow italians to be roman citizens.

this prominently included the largely latin-speaking ‘socii,’ who were the same damn ethnicity as the romans by modern standards, but they weren’t roman. also other kinds of italians including traditional enemies now subjugated. whole-ass civil war about their being sub-citizen inhabitants of the republican empire.

he happened to be in command of an army nearby, having been elected to the tier of public service where they gave you armies because that was how it still worked at that point, when commodus was assassinated. (the historical event gestured toward by the movie gladiator.)

the replacement for commodus got assassinated even harder, and severus’ troops promoted him to the top spot, and the senate apparently liked him better than the guy who bought the job from the guys who’d assassinated the last guy because they sided with severus. presumably to avoid establishing the precedent that the people who murdered the emperor got to pick the next emperor lol.

and then rome had its first provincial emperor.

What I love about this is that this paper is from April 2025, this year! Mendel discovered these principles and published them in 1866, he didn't understand what the units of inheritance were (he didn't even call them genes, he just called them factors) just how they were transmitted and expressed, his work went unexamined until it was rediscovered (decades later in 1900) and forever changed biology, it is taught in every single biology course since then

But we didn't know WHAT those specific genes in pea plants were exactly, we just knew how they were transmitted and expressed, we were the exact same as Mendel after all this time

But now we know, we know the exact genes, their locus, their pathways and DNA sequences. We finished his work. I hope he's happy.

I remember taking this college elective on film adaptations and we talked about the controversy caused by the PBS adaptation of Emma, which made a point of putting servants in every. single. scene, confronting the audience with the reality that the main characters are surrounded by servants constantly and are choosing not to acknowledge their presence. Emma is consoling her "poor" friend Harriet over her misfortune and the entire time a servant is standing there silently brushing Emma's hair or some shit. Virtually every other adaptation of Emma does a very good job of invisiblizing the constant presence of the working class labor force that allowed these people to live the way they did.
