history fucked me up
oxford was built and operational as a college before the rise of the mayans and cleopatra lived in a time nearer to pizza hutâs invention than to the pyramids being built
I need a noncomprehensive history book that covers Known World History in time periods, like âin this century, all this shit was happening concurrentlyâ and not just all spread out so I have to piece it together like some unpaid uneducated scholar
You mean like this?
The Timetables of History by Bernard Grun
I grew up with this book, which is frickinâ enormous, and it was endlessly fascinating to young me to pour over the side by side comparison of events taking place concurrently under different headings and in different parts of the world.
Or if you want something you can put on your wall, thereâs this:
World History Timeline
I had this book! My grandpa gave it to me and it was really freakin useful!!
I loved this book! Same for The Timetables of Science: A Chronology of the Most Important People and Events in the History of Science.
Same for The Timetables of Technology: A Chronology of the Most Important People and Events in the History of Technology. Great references!
okay but hereâs an even cooler (free!) visualization that goes a step further and tracks ideas, devices, infrastructures, and systems of power
Calculating Empires: A Genealogy of Technology and Power Since 1500
â¨ď¸with a special focus on colonialism, militarization, automation, and enclosureâ¨ď¸
You can spend hours upon hours exploring this
I love when fanfic authors are freakishly unhinged. "Yes, hello, I am here to write a heart wrenching story about relationships and mortality. My medium is Ducktales (2017)"
therapist: cunt dracula is not real and cannot fuck you.
cunt dracula:
[jojo pose] count dracula. [different jojo pose] nice to meet you. [jojo walk cycle] alexa, turn down the music! [the obnoxious music doesn't change volume] mr harker
Cuntula
I need to know the name and date of this production so I can search for a full-length version.
EDIT: It's Dracula: A Comedy of Terrors.
i love you front facing coelacanth :]

I think there's something that needs to be said about encouraging readers to leave feedback.
For me it's not about "tell me my writing is amazing and stroke my ego"
It's more about "please engage with me so that I can experience your joy secondhand and foster a connection with you"
I understand that not everyone wants this in their reading experience, some people are shy and a million other reasons why maybe someone wouldn't want to engage and that's perfectly fine!
But what I'm trying to steer away from is being a passive content creator with passive consumers. What I want to steer toward is fostering a community that is essential to fandom. I want to see your reactions because it makes me feel like I'm a part of something.
On encouraging reblogs â
I understand that not everyone is comfortable reblogging, especially explicit content. This is ok!
But just consider that the only reason you were able to enjoy a fic or fanart is because someone else shared it, and by not sharing it yourself you are potentially robbing someone else of the opportunity to enjoy it as much as you did.
As OPs our reach only goes so far and this website relies on reblogs in order for anything to truly get seen by a wider audience.
So that's really it! That's why I encourage these two things at the end of every story I post. Not because I'm trying to be demanding and "make people feel bad" if they don't do it.
I know most other social media sites encourage mindless content consumption and that's just the way of the world nowadays, but I am from a time when community was at the heart of fandom and I just don't want to lose that.
But what I'm trying to steer away from is being a passive content creator with passive consumers. What I want to steer toward is fostering a community that is essential to fandom. I want to see your reactions because it makes me feel like I'm a part of something.
the one thing thing funnier than this caption is that the only reason they stopped doing it was that the ferret shit in the tube
That photo makes Feliciaâs work seem much more recent than it is. Hereâs a picture of the worldâs smallest particle physicist herself.
They didnât stop because she shit in the tube - she had a diaper on because they knew poop would obstruct the particles as well. She eventually stopped running through the tubes because they became too long for her. At that point she was retired and became a pet!

My humble plea for people to cross-post their meta & other fannish nonfiction to ao3, and tag it with âmeta analysisâ so I can find it and adore it
I love this, so instructional! I love the summary format especially!
I got one thing to add; I always need to plug the use "Ensemble Cast" (or a similar fandom specific tag) instead of adding lots of individual minor characters.
Hey I donât know if this is being talked about on Tumblr but thankfully the AO3 subreddit has a conversation going about this app that just went live.
TikTok user unravel.me.now has just launch an app (lore.fm) she is calling âAudible for AO3â. Itâs an app that uses AI voices to read out fics.
đ¨She is requiring any authors who do not want their fics to be on this app to OPT OUT by emailing [email protected] đ¨ đ¨She has not given an actual template or how youâre supposed to prove youâre the author or said how her team will process this or how she will keep these requests secuređ¨
I do not have this app. I havenât seen anyone use it yet. According to Reddit users, unravel.me.nowâs earlier TikToks stated she envisions the app being able to create libraries stored on that app and to have version of âSpotify wrappedâ. That implies that eventually data collection must happen, if itâs not happening currently.
I donât know the actual capabilities of this app. I donât know the legalities. I do know that it personally feels like this app is trying to turn AO3 into a content generation source and I havenât heard of the app allowing you to leave a comment or kudos or interact with the original work.
Iâm just sad about this.
I checked their page and I found this:
So for now it seems like this could be the only barrier we have? Because their email system seems absolutely fucked and inefficient.
Turn on "prevent third-party sharing" in your settings!
Go into your settings, click on your blog name, scroll down and enable "prevent third-party sharing". I'm gonna be honest, I question how much/if this even prevents any AI bullshit, but do it just in case anyway.
Edit: On Mobile it's the Settings Gear, Visibility, Prevent third-party sharing.
You have to turn that on for all your blogs separately.
Well, see you, friends
https://www.404media.co/tumblr-and-wordpress-to-sell-users-data-to-train-ai-tools/
Internal documents obtained by 404 Media show that Tumblr staff compiled users' data as part of a deal with Midjourney and OpenAI.
Don't go after staff members because of this, for what I know they weren't even informed until later in the process. You know who this comes from.
full article, for those who don't want to sign up for an account:
Tumblr and Wordpress are preparing to sell user data to Midjourney and OpenAI, according to a source with internal knowledge about the deals and internal documentation referring to the deals.Â
The exact types of data from each platform going to each company are not spelled out in documentation weâve reviewed, but internal communications reviewed by 404 Media make clear that deals between Automattic, the platformsâ parent company, and OpenAI and Midjourney are imminent.
The internal documentation details a messy and controversial process within Tumblr itself. One internal post made by Cyle Gage, a product manager at Tumblr, states that a query made to prepare data for OpenAI and Midjourney compiled a huge number of user posts that it wasnât supposed to. It is not clear from Gageâs post whether this data has already been sent to OpenAI and Midjourney, or whether Gage was detailing a process for scrubbing the data before it was to be sent.Â
Gage wrote:
âthe way the data was queried for the initial data dump to Midjourney/OpenAI means we compiled a list of all tumblrâs public post content between 2014 and 2023, but also unfortunately it included, and should not have included:
- private posts on public blogs - posts on deleted or suspended blogs - unanswered asks (normally these are not public until theyâre answered) - private answers (these only show up to the receiver and are not public) - posts that are marked âexplicitâ / NSFW / âmatureâ by our more modern standards (this may not be a big deal, I donât know) - content from premium partner blogs (special brand blogs like Appleâs former music blog, for example, who spent money with us on an ad campaign) that may have creative that doesnât belong to us, and we donât have the rights to share with this-parties; this one is kinda unknown to me, what deals are in place historically and what they should prevent us from doing.â
Gageâs post makes clear that engineers are working on compiling a list of post IDs that should not have been included, and that password-protected posts, DMs, and media flagged as CSAM and other community guidelines violations were not included.
Automattic plans to launch a new setting on Wednesday that will allow users to opt-out of data sharing with third parties, including AI companies, according to the source, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, and internal documents. A new FAQ section we reviewed is titled âWhat happens when you opt out?â states that âIf you opt out from the start, we will block crawlers from accessing your content by adding your site on a disallowed list. If you change your mind later, we also plan to update any partners about people who newly opt-out and ask that their content be removed from past sources and future training.âÂ
404 Media has asked Automattic how it accidentally compiled data that it shouldnât share, and whether any of that content was shared with OpenAI, but did not immediately hear back from the company. 404 Media asked Automattic about an imminent deal with Midjourney last week but did not hear back then, either.
Another internal document shows that, on February 23, an employee asked in a staff-only thread, âDo we have assurances that if a user opts out of their data being shared with third parties that our existing data partners will be notified of such a change and remove their data?â
Andrew Spittle, Automatticâs head of AI replied: âWe will notify existing partners on a regular basis about anyone who's opted out since the last time we provided a list. I want this to be an ongoing process where we regularly advocate for past content to be excluded based on current preferences. We will ask that content be deleted and removed from any future training runs. I believe partners will honor this based on our conversations with them to this point. I don't think they gain much overall by retaining it.â Automattic did not respond to a question from 404 Media about whether it could guarantee that people who opt out will have their data deleted retroactively.
News about a deal between Tumblr and Midjourney has been rumored and speculated about on Tumblr for the last week. Someone claiming to be a former Tumblr employee announced in a Tumblr blog post that the platform was working on a deal with Midjourney, and the rumor made it onto Blind, an app for verified employees of companies to anonymously discuss their jobs. 404 Media has seen the Blind posts, in which what seems like an Automattic employee says, âI'm not sure why some of you are getting worked up or worried about this. It's totally legal, and sharing it publicly is perfectly fine since it's right there in the terms & conditions. So, go ahead and spread the word as much as you can with your friends and tech journalists, it's totally fine.â
Separately, 404 Media viewed a public, now-deleted post by Gage, the product manager, where he said that he was deleting all of his images off of Tumblr, and would be putting them on his personal website. A still-live post says, âi've deleted my photography from tumblr and will be moving it slowly but surely over to cylegage.com, which i'm building into a photography portfolio that i can control end-to-end.â At one point last week, his personal website had a specific note stating that he did not consent to AI scraping of his images. Gageâs original post has been deleted, and his website is now a blank page that just reads âCyle.â Gage did not respond to a request for comment from 404 Media.Â
Several online platforms have made similar deals with AI companies recently, including Reddit, which entered into an AI content licensing deal with Google and said in its SEC filing last week that itâs âin the early stages of monetizing [its] user baseâ by training AI on usersâ posts. Last year, Shutterstock signed a six year deal with OpenAI to provide training data.
OpenAI and Midjourney did not respond to requests for comment.Â
[UPDATE] - Art, Sites, Etc
Hello, friends.
As of this Friday, I am getting laid off from the job I've had for nearly a decade. Which is scary.
While this is happening, I am in the process of working with three amazing sapphic creators (@ependasketchpad, @blackbackedjackal, and @trashasaurusrex, respectively) on building a site that will be the new host for most of the work I would have typically posted on here and Twitter/BSky/etc, as well as some really exciting projects that I am positive people are gonna like seeing.
Much of it will be paywalled, for the simple reason that-- well. This, working on Nina, Sandra, Phoebe, et al's stories, will now be my full-time job. I will still have public-facing work and previews to show on here and other social media sites, but the bulk of my illustrations/sketches/etc will be offered to subscribers.
As much as this is a gamble - people are rightfully annoyed by having a bunch of disparate subscriptions these days - I can promise fans, especially sapphic fans, that it will be worth your while, and as we'll be operating independently, it will be with minimal disruptions/conflicts over whether or not 'adult material' is allowed or an issue (as in, it won't be, there will be no arbitrary blackouts or mass deletions because someone got a bug up their ass, etc).
...Phew.
So, yeah, it's big news. It's big scary. But I'm excited about what we'll be able to do moving forwards, and I am deeply grateful to have been given the reach I need to even think about making any of this a reality.
Last: if you would like to donate to the project as it's being worked on, I am leaving my Patreon up for donations and updates.
Thank you all so much, truly, and I'm looking forward to taking this new (scary) journey with all of you.

ive decided that Rebecca also gets infected in the au (after death island sometime) as a way for chris and claire to get more pissed off at the gov for letting the experiments go on this long instead of focusing on the cure they should have been working towards in the first place :>
all i did was add a view without his wings but this design is the canon one for the au :>
