@cartchytuns
Applesauce.
fucking insane to be a person of colour in the uk right now
When my family first moved to the UK, we faced a similar risk to our wellbeing & safety as many are facing now, albeit for different reasons. in light of everything happening in Ireland & the tensions increasing in Glasgow, and the perennial England, here’s a list of actionable things to do for people who may be targeted & anti racist allies.
MY HOME IS ON THE LIST/LIKELY TO BE TARGETED, WHAT CAN I DO?
* it may bring you peace of mind to have a go-bag ready, just in case. A go-bag is a bag with everything in it that you need to get out a volatile situation quickly. Any bag that can be secured (buttoned or zipped) will do. In your go-bag, you should include;
- identifying documents; passport/driver’s license/asylum card/ILR certificate/British Residency permit card
- Wallet and/or banking books
- A spare charger & cable and/or a power bank
- any shelf-stable medication (tablets, inhalers etc.) if you are on medication that needs to be refrigerated, leave it in the fridge until you have to leave
- Sanitary items; toothbrush, toothpaste, sanitary pads & tampons, deodorant. If you have very young children with you, you may also want to take your nappy bag.
* If you have to leave, a go-bag is a convenient way to ensure you have everything of importance with you.
* If you are being supported by an asylum seekers or refugee charity, or are a member of a gurdwara/temple, mosque, synagogue or church, reach out to your religious leaders. They may be able to provide direct support, or put you in contact with organisations or other congregants who can help. If you are friendly with your neighbours, it may be worth contacting them too.
* IN THE EVENT THAT “PROTESTORS” DO COME TO YOUR HOUSE, CALL 999 IMMEDIATELY, AND FOLLOW ANY INSTRUCTIONS THEY GIVE YOU. MOVE AWAY FROM ANY WINDOWS. DO NOT OPEN YOUR DOOR UNLESS INSTRUCTED TO DO SO BY EMERGENCY SERVICES.
I’M AN INTERNATIONAL STUDENT/CARE WORKER/NHS WORKER, WHAT SHOULD I DO?
* Contact your student welfare office/NHS Trust/agency for advice, support and referral to organisations that may be able to provide assistance
* if you live in or commute through an area that is likely to be targeted, contact your lecturers and your faculty to find out whether remote study is possible; if you work in care or as part of the NHS, find out if it is possible to change shifts.
* If it would provide peace of mind, prepare a go-bag as listed above
* Reach out to your the uni society or student’s organisation for international students or students of specific ethnic origin; they may be able to provide you with direction to resources and peer support. If your university has a Marxist or Socialist society, reach out to them for mutual aid with a travel buddy etc., for getting to and from your place of study/work
* If you are a member of a gurdwara/temple, mosque, synagogue or church, reach out to your religious leaders. They may be able to provide direct support, or put you in contact with organisations or other congregants who can help.
* If you are friendly with your neighbours, it may be worth contacting them too for assistance with travel to & from work.
* Report any racism or racialised violence you are subjected to. NHS staff have a right to refuse to treat patients who harass, abuse, threaten or insult them; if a patient is racist to you, where possible, ask another member of staff to take over their care.
PERSONAL SAFETY:
* do not leave your home unless strictly necessary. If it is necessary to leave, don’t do it alone.
* use NextDoor, WhatsApp, social media and word of mouth to avoid commuting through “protestor” road blocks, areas of active conflict etc.,
* When travelling, use Share My Location or Life360, and keep at least two people aware of your expected time of arrival at your destination with instructions to contact the police if you do not let them know you’ve made it safely
* do not directly confront any individuals involved, or allow them to bait you into becoming confrontational
* only record if it is safe. Do not record individuals directly/from up close
* Do not directly intervene. If you see violence occurring, contact emergency services and if safe to do so, record what’s happening.
ALLYSHIP & HOW TO HELP:
* if you have neighbours, friends, coworkers or acquaintances form targeted communities, reach out to them. Ask them what you can do to help them feel safe.
* If you live in an area likely to be targeted, reach out to any vulnerable people you know. If safe and possible, offer to let them shelter with you in the event they need to leave home
* If you see any incitement to violence online screenshot it; it may prove useful in the event of individual “protesters” being prosecuted
* If you see any specific areas being discussed as targets, alert anyone you know at risk in the area
* Reach out to local refugee & asylum seekers’ organisations, to organisations supporting foreign national care & healthcare workers, and to churches, mosques, gurdwaras; they may be looking for short term assistance in helping to provide for vulnerable members of their community
CHARITABLE ORGANISATIONS FOR ASSISTANCE & TO SUPPORT:
* NASC Ireland; refugee & asylum seeker charity
* Doras.org; migrant, stateless persons, refugee and asylum seeker rights advocates
* Jesuit Refugee Service; religious refugee & asylum seekers charity
* Irish Refugee Council; supporting stateless displaced persons & refugees in NI & ROI
* International Student’s House (IE & UK WIDE): provides hardship funding and help to international students
* PathFinder (UK WIDE); supports international students
* Care International (GLOBAL); global carer’s charity
* Choose Love (IE & UK WIDE); charitable organisation supporting refugees and asylum seekers
* Praxis UK (UK WIDE); supporting refugees & asylum seekers
* The Runnymede Trust (IE & UK WIDE); antiracism education charity
* Migrant’s Rights Network (IE & UK WIDE); advocacy and support for migrants and refugees
* ShareTheMeal (GLOBAL); providing meals for refugees and those fleeing conflict globally
* Amnesty (IRELAND, UK & WORLDWIDE); human rights NGO
* UNHCR & UN Refugee Council (GLOBAL); UN refugee bodies supporting those seeking asylum, fleeing conflict & internally/internationally displaced worldwide
Would you feel comfortable talking to your father about your mental health if you ever needed to?
Yes, because I know I can trust him to support me
Yes, although I'm not sure how he would respond
No, but not because of him, it's because I don't feel able to talk about it
No, because even though he would try, I don't think he would understand
No, because he wouldn't show much interest or would be too busy to listen
No, because he wouldn't care at all
I'm not in contact with him any more (e.g. we fell out permanently)
I've never met him or don't know him (e.g. adopted/fostered as a baby)
He's unwell and unable to support me (e.g. dementia, mental illness, etc.)
My father passed away

Gotta tell you guys something wild in the Chinese fan sphere
So some fanartist drew a “sexy” (read: booby) version of a (cartoon) character who is traditionally very non-sexualised. Fans of the character got mad about it because it’s kind of groundbreaking how that character is written and portrayed and this art totally ignores the entire point of the character. They demanded the art be deleted. In response to that other people said, well what the fanartist did may be distateful but they have every right to draw what they’re into. The two sides fight for days and each starts a harassment campaign and even report their “opponents’” accounts.
So far so typical. But things eventually come to a head and they decide that this will be settled by votes - not through a poll. Through donations to a children’s education charity via each side’s portal. Whoever can get the highest amount of donation wins.
And that is how this charity received over 1 million in donations in three days lol. Oh btw the “freedom of expression” side won by a landslide (960k to 40k)
From now on this is how all petty fandom disputes should be settled.
I don't know which of you needs to hear this but "narc" is not short for "narcissist" when someone calls you a "narc" for snitching they are calling you a "narcotics officer"
technically narc isnt even short for narcotics officer its just cant for Cop, I believe Roma in origin
I read years ago in a book that it was derived from nakk, Romani for nose, as in someone who always has their nose in other people's business
ITS DERIVED FROM "NARCO" AS IN "NARCOTICS" WHAT FUCKING BOOK
Okay you know what pulling back on my derision because i can see how this mistake would be made but narc and nark are etymologically unrelated
Etymology is always doing some shit like this
Convergent evolution.
Linguistic crab
Two entire linguistic traditions have merged to remind you not to be a fuckin narc
Plastic bong
What a beautiful baby name
Here I made this
Misogyny directed at trans men is not "accidental" or "misdirected", it is absolutely hitting its intended target.
This is literally how the shadow girls talk in utena
This may be the best Pride merch I've seen from a major corporation.
Levi's said yes, actually. Assless chaps and a biker vest. Happy Pride.
And the assless chaps sold out on June 1.
They also specifically contacted members of the leather community, used them as models iirc, and donated $100k to Outright International. They talked the talk and walked the walk and put their money on it too. I don't really care that I can't afford and don't want this merch, I love to see my community getting the respect it deserves. Levi's said, "We make jeans which gays wear lots of jeans? Oh leather daddies? Let's call them."
I think Levi's donates to Outreach International every year too, as well as sponsoring pride events and other community support. They were offering Same Sex domestic partner benefits to employees in the 90s, and have been very public about their support for pro-lgbt legislation all through the 2000s.
So, you know, a giant corporation that walks the walk pretty consistently.

Mexico amends its constitution to cut the maximum workweek from 48 to 40 hours by 2030 and gives 13.5 million workers the legal right to ignore their boss’s calls, messages, and emails after their shift ends, in the most significant overhaul of Mexican labor law in a generation.
Mexico has rewritten its constitution to guarantee every worker in the country a shorter working week, a legal right to switch off from work after hours, and a guarantee that no employer can cut their pay in response, enacting in a single legislative package a set of labor rights that workers in wealthier countries have spent decades campaigning for without success.

heterophobic nanami real
[ID: two screenshots from 'revolutionary girl utena' of nanami and touga standing in the rose garden. nanami imploringly clings to touga, who stands stiffly with his face obscured from the audience. in the first screenshot, nanami says: 'i know i have to accept that you go out with girls.'
in the second screenshot, nanami continues: 'but don't go out with a girl like her!' /end ID]
on a more serious note the way that nanami frames her dislike of touga’s relationships guts me without fail every time. immediately after this she says ‘you deserve better than this’ which is. So Interesting. and touga replies ‘are you implying you’re the better choice?’ which. my head is in my hands. there’s this horrible intense close-up of his face when he asks that and it’s just soooooo. oh it is So. me when touga has an incredibly fucked up relationship to sexuality and desirability.
but i digress, top ten things about nanami that make me love her more than anyone else in the world ever is the way that she’s so concerned with touga’s well-being and him not being ‘swarmed’ by girls, and at the same time. so wonderfully selfish and entitled. and at the same time. so horribly insecure and guilty about all of that. you know nanami was a terribly lonely and unnoticed child, her only ‘friends’ are lackeys she’s met within the show’s current-day timeframe, her parents ignored her (we dont need to get into whether or not that’s fortunate for her), when she says touga’s ‘smile was for me and me alone’ she really means that. like i believe her!!!! and i understand why he’s so important to her, because it’s like he’s the only person who has ever seen and loved her. and she’s so desperately sad and insecure because she killed his cat and he’s been cold with her ever since and oh god oh god i just need someone to say no one else will do it has to be you just once.
the guilt that nanami feels about Existing. being alive being born taking up space being a (weird non-)person at all. especially the guilt about killing that cat, especially the guilt about Changing her brother (which she has entirely accepted as something she did btw, always wondering why he’s so cold to her nowadays and reasoning that’s it). you know she’s repenting she’s saying over and over again i did this terrible thing and i regret it every day and im awful and terrible and selfish because i still want this one thing i need this one thing. maybe i can get it if i make sure nothing like this ever happens again. framing all these girls as ‘vermin’, a ‘swarm’, worrying herself about their intentions or uncleanliness or whatever. her brother sat catatonic in a room for who knows how long and she’s not supposed to try and fix that for him? try and make sure no one ever puts him in that state again?
i think. maybe. what im getting at here. is the princeliness of the little sister, princehood exercised by a sister. princehood here is the desire or ability to save someone, to exert control and power over them. as i said above nanami is guilt and insecurity and shame and entitlement all bundled together, and that’s partially imho because she has this idea of touga as her prince and she’s his princess, but touga rarely and minimally plays along with it and instead purposefully exacerbates this tendency of hers to. well. get possessive and defensive. and this makes all of those negative feelings they both have worse! it’s like theyre always playing this fucked up game of chicken where they just keep on expressing sentiments that almost get at how they really feel about things and then at the last second they both just regress back to these equivocations that obfuscate The Truth (not pictured here).
like, ‘you deserve better’ = i want you to be happy i want you to love me i want you to forgive me i don’t really think you should. ‘are you implying you’re the better choice?’ = i feel stifled by you i need you i need you to need me i wish i didn’t. their whole egg episode convo is a similar thing. all of their convos are like this. neither of them can say how they really feel and touga purposefully says things that makes the whole thing Worse but often not in the way he thinks he’s making it worse, and nanami often unknowingly says things that make it worse. tldr they cannot communicate on the same level whatsoever wow it’s almost like they’re profoundly alienated from one another and unwilling to change their flawed perceptions of the other. and i am so normal about all of that btw :)
